Where Cork grows on trees

Advantages: fantastic area to visit
Disadvantages: none

...At Easter we holidayed in Andalucia inland not on the coast. We had a hired car and did drive a bit and we also went for walks. Andalusia's mountainous and some of the area still had snow in Early April. Where ever we were it was not far away from a cork oak tree .A lot of Andalucia has man managed cork oak forests. These forests were quite dense not much light getting through the canopy. These woods not as dark as pine forest though The cork forests we went into seemed to be well managed and some have Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification, which recognizes that their forests are managed to the highest international social and environmental standards. The cork oak tree quercus suber is a deciduous tree the leaves lobed and it produces acorns. An individual oak grows 9=12 meters tall. A cork tree can live to about 200...

Diamond review  How to have a Corking time.....

Advantages: You need never have a boring moment...
Disadvantages: I'm not there to show you around

...AM I QUALIFIED TO TELL YOU ABOUT CORK CITY? From the years 1996 to 2000, I attended UCC in Cork (the big university there) and have gone back every year for varying amounts of time from weekend break to ?using up holiday time? week long holidays. Presuming you have a week or so to spare, some cash to spend and are curious to visit the city which will be the European city of Culture in 2005, here is a 'week-filling guide' for that city..... Each of the days can be taken as a whole or part of the others, if you are only there for a weekend, just look at the weekend section etc. CURRENCY CONVERSION: 10.00 Euros = 6.77 UK £'s 10.00 Euros = 12.06 US $'s HOW TO GET THERE... *Fly directly into Cork airport **Train from Heuston Station Dublin into Kent Street station Cork. Warning - the evening trains (post 4.30) are...

Just Corking

Advantages: Plenty to see and do, cheap accomodation
Disadvantages: Rather touristy, not suited to people wanting to 'get away from it all'

...Our first thought as we arrived in Cork was “Oh my god, we’re back in Dublin!” Having slept most of the stretch from Cahir to Cork we were worried for a minute that we’d hopped on the wrong bus – the river running through the town centre complete with periodic bridges, the ‘Centra Quick Stop’ on every second corner and the slightly crumbly stone houses did seem almost uncannily familiar. But no – we were in the right place after all. As the second largest city in the Republic of Ireland, Cork is quite a buzzing place, full of old buildings, churches, shopping centres, pubs and, of course, tourists. On arrival, we hefted our backpacks and began to follow my hastily scribbled directions for the ‘Sheila’s of Cork’ hostel. Only about 10 minutes walk from the bus stop...

Cork City and Youghal

Advantages: Everything!
Disadvantages: It's too hard to leave!

...Well I don't really know where to start when it comes to this brilliant place! I've only been to Cork city centre a few times as when we go every year we stay in Youghal, a small seaside resort on the east coast of Cork county. Cork is the second biggest city in Southern Ireland, only behind the country's capital Dublin. There are 127, 253 people in Cork city and 283,116 in the county. The shopping is great, there is some really great scenery and the nightlife is brilliant! What more could you want? I think this is the city for everyone! I'll start with the shopping, there are some well known shops like Boots, Tesco, Argos, Laura Ashley and Marks and Spencers. There's also about 10 shopping centres or malls around the city. There in an English market in Cork which sells local and exotic food. This is a good place to visit...

Pop a Cork! - Cork International Airport Hotel

Advantages: Unique, Extremely Comfortable, Location, New build, Service
Disadvantages: Maybe a little pricey

...OVERVIEW If you are considering a trip to Ireland, one of the most popular areas to visit is around Cork. Although I've been to Ireland almost annually since a child, I'd never visited Cork until this year. The area differs enormously from the West Coast, in that there are more rolling hills, arable farming and very reminiscent of Cornwall or Devon. On my travels I always like to stay in nice hotels, well at least the best that I can afford, and that usually entails trawling through the various travel booking engines to see which is offering the best deal. I tend to find that the airport hotels are usually slightly cheaper than those in the centre of town, and for me there is the added bonus that I can do a bit of plane spotting and photography as well!! When booking my recent trip I came across the Cork International Airport...

Fall Out Boy - From Under The Cork Tree

Advantages: Amazing pop punk, Highly Catchy, Great lyrics, Comical band
Disadvantages: Some may be critical of this CDs high production values

...have 5 good tracks, with a load of average ones. This is definitely not the case and in 'From Under The Cork Tree' the band have produced a truly fine album worthy of being in anyone's CD collection. Seriously, whatever type of music you're predominantly into - I swear that you will find enjoyment in this Fall Out Boy album, it really it a fine piece of work. My favourites on this CD are probably 'Dance, Dance,' '7 Minutes In heaven,' 'Nobody Puts Baby In The Corner,' and the almighty 'Get Busy Living Or Get Busy Dying.' These are all great tracks and show off perfectly the fine skills that Fall Out Boy have to offer. There is never a dull moment on this album, but I just feel that these 4 tracks in particular really do convey the fun and enthusiasm that Fall Out Boy ooze seemingly with ease. The tracks have awesome vocals with great...

The Cork and Bottle, a Pub in Barnstaple

Advantages: Fantastic Pub
Disadvantages: None

...The Cork & Bottle is situated at the top end of Barnstaples' High Street, opposite the Primark Store. It is a fairly old style pub with a friendly atmosphere. The main bar is in the middle of the pub with seating all around. There is a cocktail bar which opens on Thursday, Friday & Saturday Night. The Barman juggles Glasses & Bottles which is always entertaining. There is a DJ in the evenings who plays mainstream dance music and requests There is a Quiz Night on Sundays where you can win bottles of beer There is food served during the day. Other Features are 2 Fruit machines,Quiz Machine, Telephone, Cigarette Machine, and a selection of daily papers. This is a great little pub where the barmen always make an effort to learn your name and your usual....

Short break in and around Cork, Ireland

Advantages: Maryborough House Hotel & Spa
Disadvantages: Not much to do, disc parking schemes

...We had a 4 night break based around Cork, the good point was the hotel in Douglas (Maryborough Hotel and Spa) which was very good with excellent facilities and very friendly staff (probably because most were eastern european rather than Irish). Not a cheap option though. Overall though we found Cork disappointing, the countryside is OK, nothing spectacular though, and many areas appear shabby. One thing we did note was the apparent aversion to tourists in terms of lack of parking spaces - Cork City and most towns - even small ones have "disc parking" i.e. if you are local it's easy to park, if not then virtually impossible or you pay often over 2 euros per hour - and worse many parking bays have a 2 hour maximum stay. The City itself was also disappointing, it seems to be undergoing a major refurb in the centre at the moment...

Windsor Inn- Windsor Out

Advantages: Good location, triple room available, price
Disadvantages: Lots of stairs, NO HOT WATER, Not very clean

...~~The Windsor Inn~~ ~~Booking~~ A girls holiday was in order and Cork seemed like the perfect location as it was slightly cheaper than Dublin but there was still lots to do. After trailing through many search websites we finally came across The Windsor Inn hotel. So this is where our problems began. We booked the hotel through booking.com and got to the end of the whole confirmation part and paid when a pop-up came along saying the room we'd paid for was not available. I tried contacting booking.com who confirmed that no payment had been made, I even phoned my credit card company to make sure. So an hour later we'd booked another hotel and I went to my emails and low and behold I found that I had confirmation of the Windsor Inn saying that we did have the room. (I eventually paid for 2 hotels in the end and had a real problem...

Jury's inn hotel

Advantages: close to city centre
Disadvantages: shower in bathroom hard to turn off and on

...cans on one, snacks on another etc) The hotel has two places to eat the main restaurant and the bar area which offers 'pub food'. The bar is cheaper and the food was good for the price. The cheapest on the menu was ?11.95. On my first night I ate in the bar area and had the chicken tika. Although this may not have been the chicken tika most Brits would expect it was excellent. The drawback is that the hotel does not offer room service. There is also a coffee bar which serves tea/coffee and a selection of pastries up until the bar closes at 1am. As the hotel is in Ireland naturally there is no smoking in any of the public areas of the hotel. As I am a non-smoker I did not ask about whether there was an option of a 'smoking' bedroom. As for the local area Cork is a quiet city and has some good restaurants. One to avoid in my...
