Plymouth Copthore Hotel
Advantages: Great Location
Disadvantages: More of a Good 3* Hotel than a 4* Hotel.
...I have mixed views on the Plymouth Copthorne Hotel. I have stayed here numerous times, and have experienced a variety of services from "average" to "good".
Official details about the hotel (and booking rates) can be found here: http://www.benbow.org.uk/CopthornePlymouth.htm
First of all, I have never had a "bad" experience in the Copthorne. There have been times where an issue arose, but this was then sorted out by the front desk staff. Saying that, the issue shouldn't have arisen in the first place.
Pro's :
Great Location in the center of Plymouth. If you are travelling by train, it is a 3 minute walk away from the station (or a really cheap taxi ride!).
The prices - especially for weekend deals - can be competative compared to other hotels / B&B's in the area.
They have parking under the hotel for hotel guests...

A Bad Nights Sleep at Plymouth Travelodge
Advantages: Good location
Disadvantages: Lumpy Beds, Noisy
...A recent trip to Plymouth meant I needed to book a hotel for the night for me and my partner - but due to low funds it needed to be something cheap and cheerful. Enter the local Travelodge. I have to admit to having never stayed in a Travelodge before, but had heard that they were a cheap alternative.
~~Price~~
I have to say that I was quite shocked at how much one night would cost as I have stayed in cheaper and more luxurious places than this before. Unfortunately we couldn?t find a room anywhere else in Plymouth for that night due to various events that were taking place in the city. The Travelodge we eventually looked at didn?t have any standard double rooms available so we had to go with the family room which ended up costing us £79! I have to say these are not the type of prices I am used to hearing people quote when...

Plymouth
Advantages: Sea and country not far apart
Disadvantages: Old city miles from the rest of UK
...I was born and bred in Plymouth and moved away at 26 years old because of work. I visit family about once a month and in my mind Plymouth is the best city in the world, but it does have faults. I have attemped to give an insight in Plymouth under varying sub headings so the reader can pick out info relevant to them.
HISTORY
Plymouth has alot of it. The Pilgrim Fathers sailed from here from Mayflower steps, still evident today. The most famous person is Sir Francis Drake who led the battle against the spanish armada from his bout the Golden Hind. His home Buckland Abbey is only a few miles inland towards Dartmoor. Allegedly, Sir Frances finished his games of bowls before sailing, but apparently it was low water and he could not sail even if he wanted to. Upon the famous Plymouth Hoe is a statue honouring him.

Plymouth University!
Advantages: Great atmosphere, lovely city, friendly supportive staff and students!
Disadvantages: None.
...Plymouth is a great city making it a good choice for a University. If you are thinking you need to get away from the busy life of the bigger cities Plymouth might be the place for you! But don't think that means Plymouth doesn't have the shops, nighlife and great surroundings you expect from your time in Uni... it does!
Plymouth is a relativley small city with only approx 250,000 people, this is for some a negative but for me and many others the real beauty of the city.
Plymouth Uni is located right in the centre of the city, only 5 minutes max from the main shopping centre and the main campus is in sight of some of the main student orientated bars!
The University has a really good, newly re-furbished library with most of the literature you could possibly need for any subject. It has a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere with plenty...

Getting away from Plymouth
Advantages: It's near Cornwall
Disadvantages: Not near enough though
...Although Plymouth is a nice town with lots to do and see with many historical associations, my personal feeling is that it is too big if one is on holiday. There are two JD Wetherspoon pubs there and I was not able to find one of them, so that didn't increase my enthusiasm to stay there!! Here then is my light hearted guide of short breaks to get away from Plymouth.
The first thought that crosses my mind is to head North for Dartmoor. This is such a huge and unspoiled part of the country where one is able to see many animals in their natural environment such as ponies, sheep and horses, and the added advantage is that the scenery is stunning. For an insight a look at Dartmoor Prison wouldn't go amiss, it is a frightening building in a lonely location, when I was last outside it at 7 at night the mist came down AND the fan belt...

Why Plymouth
Advantages: Close to the sea, not too expensive
Disadvantages: Campus could be better
...Why come to Plymouth? Well why not? OK, it isn't the most famous university city in the UK but that doesn't mean it isn't worth coming to. I am currently a second year student and am based on the main campus in Plymouth City Centre. Since arriving in Plymouth 18 months ago, I have had the time of my life.
I think that the university itself is working very hard to shrug off its 'old poly' image and develop into a uni of the 21st century. The facilities aren't bad; the campus itself is fairly compact but expanding rapidly. On the main campus you will find most of what you need; Student's Union (bar, shop, beer 'garden', canteen e.t.c.), library, open access computing facilities, sandwich shop, HSBC bank and cashpoints and a few more canteen/restaurant - type outlets. We certainly don't have the most attractive campus (students fight to...

Engineering at Plymouth
Advantages: Excellent teaching
Disadvantages: Distance from main campus (good and bad)
...Plymouth has been proven as the best place to study Civil Engineering in the whole of the UK. Along with the high teaching standards, the Technology / Engineering department is situated slightly away from the main campus, which gives a more kind of friendly feel to it. It's probably less than 1 minutes walking from the sea, which is always nice on a warm sunny day. It is however, still only a very short walk into the city centre, where you can find all the shops you need. On the site, there are all the necessary facilities, such as computers (not too many, but with the lower student numbers, there are nearly always some available). The lecturers are all very nice genuine people (most of which continue their work as Engineers etc. in their free time).
The night life is obviously going to be very good with so many pubs and clubs to...

Plymouth,A Fine Maritime City
Advantages: Interesting. History. Maritime Flavour. Good Shops
Disadvantages: Can get very busy. Prices can get high in touristy areas
...Ever since I was a small boy I have had a tremendous liking for maritime cities. I suppose the open sea beckons for people like me who suffer from wanderlust or,what might be called, "The grass is always greener on the other side syndrome "! This is why I like Plymouth in South West England very much. Frankly it is not a city that I know exceptionally well but I have visited it on three separate occasions and liked what I saw.It seems to me to be a very relaxed,laid-back sort of place that somehow succeeds in successfully combining the old with the new.
Plymouth is a nice mixture of modernity and old world charm. Due to the German Air Force during World War II, much of the city centre had to rebuilt, and it is a modern, pedestrianised area full of well known shops including the likes of Woolworths, Boots , Topshop, Argos...

To be a student at Plymouth University
Advantages: modern uni, great night life, nice accomodation, good fun!
Disadvantages: quite far from the rest of england,
...(Web links at the bottom of the page)
The University of Plymouth is the largest university in the South West with over 30,000 students currently enrolled and based on student population, is the UK's 4th biggest university behind London and Manchester's universities. There are nearly 3,000 staff employed at the university and its annual income is in the range of 110 million pounds.
It has developed enormously within the past 15 years thanks to great enthusiasm behind the scenes. It was 'Polytechnic South West' and did not have a great reputation. In 1992 it became a university and has progressed constantly from then to now. As far as its academic standards are considered, they are very good, The Guardian's national university league table shows that in 2005 it was placed at 73rd place and in may 2006 has climbed all the way to 40th...

Plymouth - Raised to love it.
Advantages: Caters for all ages.
Disadvantages: None
...I lived away from Plymouth for many years and when I returned there I was amazed at how much there was to do and see in Plymouth without spending an absolute fortune.
The sea front is well laid out for walks and historically very interesting to see where Sir Francis Drake supposedly finished his game of bowls before defeating the Armada. There is an area called The Barbican which is the older part of town and which now caters for the artistic as well as the tourist, with loads of art galleries, and antique shops and parades as well as a huge complex selling glassworks which is nice to visit. There are restaurants to cater for all from cheap to chic, and the evening life is also very good for even old fogies like me. There are many pubs and clubs, and the City centre seems to hum with activity both night and day.
The theatre Royal...
