Chilling Atmosphere

Guillermo del Toro, who produced this movie, managed, once again, to create something exceptionally good, a movie that doesn't rely on special-effects to frighten the viewer. If you haven't seen the Japanese version, you'll actually like this movie? however, if you've seen the original, you might want to pass on the remake. Like all the previous remakes of cult Japanese horror movies, this one is passable. No one can beat the Japanese when it comes to creating a nail-biting atmosphere on a low budget - even the Americans, with their weighty budgets, are unable to create a decent 're-make'. The storyline is brilliant, it opens the door to 'horrific' opportunities, however, the bland atmosphere simply can't cope with the horror-aspect of the script. Kate Morton has clearly researched the period in which the book is set very well, there is a lot of detail about clothing, rations, shell-shock of the war etc throughout the book, and it is all used in the right context. Kate Morton uses a lot of descriptive text when writing about Riverton Manor and it's ground. You can really lose yourself in this description and I find it easy to visulise the house, it is fantastic. The pictures in my head are mesmerising, and it is so atmospheric, you can really believe you are there! I absolutely adored this book. As I said before, it is not normally the sort of book I would read, but I am so glad that I read it now! I wasn?t overly impressed, giving it one listen before dismissing it as garbage and forgetting about it. It wasn?t until recently that I decided to give it another go.
