A fund for the long term.

Advantages: tracks ftse uk index, low charges, spread risk , can be ISA'd
Disadvantages: covers all sectors, can miss out on sector over performance

...where to look? Well Fidelity Moneybuilder Index Fund fits the bill for me. It is available from Fidelity's Funds Network which is a supermarket of investment funds with over 950 different funds from 55 fund managers. Fidelity Moneybuilder UK index ------------------------------------------ Aims to track the FTSE all share index which means it invests in the Large FTSE 100 companies down to smaller companies in the main market, but not AIM market stocks. Performance On the fidelity website you have a very useful feature that gives you an overview of each fund. Over five years the fund has returned 4.9% now remember that the market fell 28% from 2001-2002 over three years the fund returned 23.6% and over a year 27% Charges Now this is where Fidelity score over the competition. There is no initial charge on ISA and ISA...

Teething links

Advantages: simple fun bright
Disadvantages: none!

...I bought these for my daughter now that she's started teething and they have fast become her favourite toy despite being very simple and cheap compred to many of the other toys she has! These links are simple. They consist of one large black and white plastic ring which then has a series of other rings that can snap onto this main ring. These links are all different colours and textures. THere are 10 links in total and they have smooth ones, bobbly ones, ones with ridges on and ones with dots on. They are orange and green and red and purple and many others. What is great about these is that they are very light so it's realy easy for Baby Hope to hold onto them and play with them herself. She is able to hold onto them and jiggle them around, because they are plastic and all linked on they make a very nice rattly noise which...

Advantages: don't have to leave home
Disadvantages: can't try the clothes on

...I ordered a coat form index extra (www.indexextra.co.uk) and although i had to wait a while it did eventually come. The problem with the site is that it is hard to navigate and very slow, as you would expect with all the images but this was really slow, i also had to place my order twice and make two phone calls to the company before my order was finally accepted. They give you the option of easy payment, with which you get 10% off your order. Although it took about a week for my coat to arrive, when the site says 2 days, i was mainly pleased with the service and i now have a nice new coat. Only do certain sizes (up to a 14)...

ITS A RIGHT INDEX TO INDEX.

Advantages: Good if they have it.
Disadvantages: They normally dont have it.

...Its My Right Index to Index. Its almost Xmas and myself and my partner are planning what presents to get for friends and family. This is me looking back by the way and I am not confused as to what month we are in. It?s the 6th April so please don?t be worrying about my sanity, well maybe just a bit. So out with the good old Index book and lets have a look at what there is in it. To be fair it is a really good catalogue and has something for everyone. So we look at the toys section and get that toy for the kids and something for my Mum and a few things for ourselves, cant very well leave ourselves out can we. The list is complete and the codes are all filled in and its just a matter of getting into the car and driving to Index. On arrival I can see its totally packed and I know I should have done my Xmas shopping earlier but...

The missing link in the chain.

Advantages: See text.
Disadvantages: See text.

...on that are from the same show but they may have a few couples on from a wider variety of shows but actually on the Weakest Link they will be all from the same show such as Eastenders casts; TV chefs, and so on. But the stars are all raising money for the charity of their choice, and the prize funds in all the rounds is actually in fact £5,000 per round! All in all, this is a good show that provides you with all round entertainment so happy viewing!...

A real dog fund

Advantages: May recover in the long term
Disadvantages: Perpetual has been taken over by Invesco

...I must admit I had never heard of Perpetual 5 years ago. It was my independent financial adviser who brainwashed me in thinking Perpetual was the best thing since sliced bread. The literature from Perpetual is quite mind-blowing. An entire page devoted to the awards and prizes received by the company in the preceding 5 years. The rest of the literature was marketed superbly. You got the feeling that if you did not purchase a Perpetual fund you were missing out on something big. Anyway I put £500 in the Perpetual Asian Smaller Markets fund. I had read an article in the Financial Times that the Tiger economies in Southeast Asia were ready to take off and investors should not miss out. Well two months later the Tiger economies had a massive market crash. Soon my £500 was worth £256. It was great timing on my part. Instead of selling...

Review of Perpetual Asian Smaller Markets Fund

A large fund investing in high yield securities

Advantages: The fund tends to outperform in flat and falling markets, high dividend yield of around 3%, good long term performance and good manager
Disadvantages: Large £2.6 billion in size makes fund less flexible, 5% initial charge, underperforms when growth stocks are fashionable

...I invested in this fund in september 1998 for my final PEP allowance before PEP's were abolished by the New Labour government. I had been tracking this fund before investing in it. At the time of investing the financial markets were in turmoil caused by the Asian financial crisis, the collapse of the large hedge fund Long Term Capital Management and currency devaluations in emerging markets. I think interest rates in the UK were also on the rise at the time. My strategy in buying this fund was to try and make a purchase close to the bottom of the UK market and get a good price. I didn't quite manage to make a purchase at the absolute bottom of the market but was close making a purchase at around 138p per unit. The fund pays a dividend yield that aims to be in excess of the yield on the FTSE All Share index. The objective of the fund...

The Link to excellent service

Advantages: friendly staff, good range, loyalty scheme
Disadvantages: is there one in your area?

...Need to buy a new mobile, want impartial advice? Then this is the place to go! If any of you reading this have seen my previous opinions on the Mitsubishi Geo & Mars mobile phones, then you may be wondering where I got my info from. Voila! The Link is the place that I shop at. I initially went there a few years ago to buy my very first mobile. Knowing nothing at all about what type, tariff, network etc I eventually after much window shopping went into my local Link store in Liverpool cIty Centre. That was 4 years ago, and I still go there now - you may be asking yourself why. Upon entering I found one very noticeable thing - no salesperson jumping on you as you enter the door. As I walked around looking at different mobiles/tariffs, the staff seemed to allow to peruse the shop without interference. When I approached one for some...

Review of The Link

Link for free

Advantages: Convenient freee network of cash machines
Disadvantages: May become a chargeable service

...The Link was set up the mid 1980’s by an organisation of 40 + financial institutions and is essentially a shared network of cash machines which are distributed throughout the United Kingdom. The aim is to decrease the expansion costs for the alliance members and by extension, lower costs for their customers. A nice idea in principal, but maybe someone would like to take a look at my last bank Statement? Nowadays, the Link is nearly as well branded and established as Visa and MasterCard signs. I had always believed that the Link was a free of charge service, so wherever I went in the country, come rain or shine I trekked around the town until I found a Link ATM. I was wrong, it depends where you are and which card you choose to use. The rules of the money game are as follows: If you card issuer usually charges you for cash...

Fund Manager on the Move?

Advantages: Superb historic performance.
Disadvantages: Potential change of manager. Volatile sector.

...I have recently heard that the manager of this fund, Tim Woolley, is leaving to set up his own fund management company. I cannot vouch for the accuracy of the information but I am aware that when something of this nature happens, it can have serious repercussions on performance. The Henderson Global Technology fund has enjoyed amazing success over an extended period, and much of this has to be down to the fund manager. The fund has achieved 530% growth in the last five years alone, without undue volatility (until this year). The fund stands at one-and-a-quarter billion pounds, which is smaller than Aberdeen Technology, which could explain why they've out-performed Aberdeen over that period. A change of fund manager is always worrying, so if you haven't invested in this fund yet but were thinking of doing, it may be worth waiting...
