The Age of Kali: Travels and Encounters in India - William Dalrymple

According to the ancient Hindu scriptures, history is divided into four epochs. As William Dalrymple was told again and again on his travels around the Indian subcontinent, the region is now in the throes of the 'Kali Yug', the Age of Kali, an epoch of darkness and disintegration. In such an age normal conventions fall apart: anything is possible. 'The Age of Kali' is the distillation of ten years' relentless travelling around the length and breadth of the subcontinent, from the fortresses of the drug barons of the North-West Frontier to the jungle lairs of the Tamil Tigers, from the decaying palaces of Hyderabad to the Keralan exorcist temple of the bloodthirsty goddess Parashakti - She Who is Seated on a Throne of Five Corpses. Everywhere Dalrymple finds an ancient landscape overwhelmed by change, where the old certainties have been swept away, but where a new order has yet to fully establish itself. In some places the disintegration typical of the Age of Kali has reached almost apocalyptic proportions. In Lucknow Dalrymple finds a war being fought between rival wings of the student union, each side being armed with grenades and assault rifles; in neighbouring Bihar he finds the state has totally succumbed to a tidal wave of violence, corruption and endemic caste warfare. Courageous, compassionat, erudite and beautifully written, laced with a thread of William Dalrymple's characteristic black humour, 'The Age of Kali' is a 'tour de force' of intellectual curiosity, direct observation and unprejudiced enquiry. Essential reading for anyone who wants to come to terms with India, it will further enhance Dalrymple's reputation as the most formidable travel writer of his generation. ... less

India's Forgotten Women [DVD]

The fourth in a series of documentaries, director Michael Lawson explores the outrageous plight of millions of women oppressed in India today because of their caste identity. The documentary, filmed in towns and villages in and around Hyderabad, Bengalaru, Belgaum and Mumbai portrays comprehensive claims of caste oppression, and in some cases outright persecution. Presenter, Anjali Guptara, unearths astonishing, never-seen-before evidence of domestic violence, dowry crime, sex selective abortion, female infanticide, bonded labour, rape, temple prostitution, and human trafficking. Some of the most shocking yet moving episodes are interviews with temple prostitutes, the dark scenes of squalor in Mumbai's red light district, and the simple dignity of women whose whole bodies have been burned and scarred by unprincipled and heartless caste violence. After sixty years of Independence, and India's enormous economic growth, surprisingly little has changed for women on the lowest rung of the caste ladder. In a society where freedom, democracy and wealth are so highly prized why is it that Dalit women are still so shockingly abused, exploited and oppressed? ... less

William Dalrymple's White Mughals is destined to become one of the great non-fictional classics of Anglo-Indian history. Dalrymple is steeped in India, having lived there for six years, and written a series of remarkable travel books chronicling its past and present, including City of Djinns and The Age of Kali. Having already earned comparisons with great travel writers like Chatwin and Theroux, Dalrymple has now produced a meticulously researched and beautifully written historical narrative on one of the most colourful but neglected aspects of British colonial rule in India. Set in and around Hyderabad at the beginning of the nineteenth century, White Mughals tells the story of the improbably romantic love affair and marriage between James Achilles Kirkpatrick, a rising star in the East India Company, and Khair-un-Nisa, a Hyderabadi princess. Pursuing Kirkpatrick's passionate affair through the archives across the continents, Dalrymple unveils a fascinating story of intrigue and love that breaches the conventional boundaries of empire. As Kirkpatrick gradually goes native (adopting local clothes and enduring circumcision) he becomes a secret agent working for his wife's royal family against the English, as he tries to balance the interests of both cultures. However, White Mughals is by no means just an exotic love story. It is a vehicle for Dalrymple's understanding of the complex legacy of the English Empire in India, that he defines more in terms of exchange and negotiation than dominance and subjugation. It is a powerful and moving plea by Dalrymple to understand the cultural intermingling and hybridity that defines both eastern and western cultures, and a convincing rejection of religious intolerance and ethnic essentialism. Elegantly written and at a pace that belies its length, White Mughals confirms Dalrymple's status as one of the most important non-fiction writers of his time. -Jerry Brotton ... less

The Beautiful Tree: A Personal Journey into How the World's Poorest People are Educating Themselves - James Tooley
Everyone from Bono to the United Nations is looking for a miracle to bring schooling within reach of the poorest children on Earth. James Tooley found one...... more
Everyone from Bono to the United Nations is looking for a miracle to bring schooling within reach of the poorest children on Earth. James Tooley found one hiding in plain sight. While researching private schools in India for the World Bank, and worried he was doing little to help the poor, Tooley wandered into the slums of Hyderabad's Old City. Shocked to find it overflowing with tiny, parentfunded schools filled with energized students, he set out to discover if schools like these could help achieve universal education. Named after Mahatma Gandhi's phrase for the schools of pre-colonial India, The Beautiful Tree recounts Tooley's journey from the largest shanty town in Africa to the hinterlands of Gansu, China. It introduces readers to the families and teachers who taught him that the poor are not waiting for educational handouts. They are building their own schools and educating themselves. ... less

Hyderabad a City of Enchantment and Jewels
Advantages: exudes a rich heritage culture, yet is modern! (aka Hi-tech city -due to software programmers) best IT recruitment, food, pleasant evenings outdoors, shopping, people!
Disadvantages: getting there..? maybe dusty for some, not the usual touristy place..?
...Hyderabad Deccan is found in the state of Andhra Pradesh in India, it is a city that still exudes charm, which is reminiscent of a bygone era with its rich heritage and culture. Today, it is a mixture of modern influences with memories of the trappings and sophistication of the Nizams (Royalty) that ruled that part of India. It is also the city I originate from and have grown extremely fond...

Hyderagood, Hyderabad, but Not Hydera-indifferent
Advantages: Big, friendly, exotic, friendly, cheap, friendly.
Disadvantages: Pollution and sense distortingly weird traffic
...India assaults your senses.
It?s a cliché, but it?s true nonetheless. Step out of the plane, and there?s a definite change?everything: smell, heat, noise, all these things are different. You?ve left Europe behind and you?ve stepped into another, older, world. Different rules apply, different customs.
And that?s just the airport! Wait ?til you get outside!

Hyderabad - a truely charming experience!

Disadvantages: traffic?, not touristy
...Hyderabad Deccan is found in the state of Andhra Pradesh in India, it is a city full of charms and surprises. It is a mixture of modern influences with memories of the past whereby the Nizams ruled that part of India. It has a wealth of old palaces and beautiful architecture, though sadly many of the palaces are in ruins.
More recently, it has become known as the hi-tech city of India due to...
