infra red cat flap - rubbish!!!

...Firstly: A few weeks ago I purchased a Staywell 400 Series ? Magnetic Cat Flap and fitted to all your guidelines ? Found within few days that another cat was somehow managing to gain access? Found that one cat was gaining access with just a metal collar ? not a magnet and another by forcing the flap (no collar at all). As I am heavily pregnant and did not want continuing stray cats ? spraying on, lying on, defacing my furniture and eating all of our own cats food I decided to return the item and purchase the Staywell 500 Infra Red Cat Flap ? I have had this fitted around two weeks. I still have the problem of another cat inside the property and my own cat that cannot get in. Infra-Red Catflap Drove my Cat Mad!

Advantages: Prevents access to stray cats, including any with magnetic-type keys
Disadvantages: Intermittent operation of locking mechanism

..., this kept the strays out, but a few months later, I realised that Black Tom was still getting in somehow. One day, I discovered how-he was actually hooking the bottom of the flap with his claw, and pulling it open from the outside! I then splashed out on a Staywell 500 Infra Red model (£49.99), to see if this would solve the problem, and indeed, it did keep the strays out completely! Fluffy didn't mind the large yellow infra-red key, and it seemed to work fine initially. But later on, she started having problems with it. She likes to sit outside the door for a while before finally deciding to come in. This causes the latch to open and close repeatedly while she's thinking about it, and often it will have locked itself again by the time she decides to come in. To add insult to injury, the the mechanism sometimes doesn't work at all...

Hopeless against determined cats

Disadvantages: Weak lock, easy to break down

...This is our second cat flap and thought it might solve the problem of a neighbourhood cat breaking and entering our house to eat our cat's food and terrorise her. We couldn't be more wrong. While the infra red collar might seem a good idea, the weakness in this product is the ineffective red lock on the cat flap. Because it is set to one side, only a bit of force is required to push it open. There should be another lock on the other side of the hole so that it gives it extra strength. This rogue cat can simply launch itself at the flap and it's in without any real difficulty. Total waste of £60 and wouldn't recommend it to anyone...

A poorly designed product that has spent more time in manual mode

...I purchased the 500 infra red cat flap to provide a cat flap to let my cats in and not the neighbours. I've been very disappointed! First problem I found was when taking the battery cover off to use the control buttons the batteries pop out and reset the unit making using the controls very difficult. Then the mechanism fell apart on the inside, luckily nothing broke just the parts that control the lock fell off the motor, this was fairly straight forward to put back together and hasn't happened since, maybe this was just a one off. The final straw with this poor product was the collars. The first one fell apart and lost the chip/battery part that operates the door. The second one corroded inside after only 4 weeks use. I wrote to staywell and the responce I had was the keys and water resistant and not water proof so won...

...This product simply does not work ! I had an intruder cat which was getting into my home and eating my cats food and spraying on the walls and urinating wherever it wanted. So i decided enough was enough and forked out for a Staywell 500 infrared cat flap (with blue collar tags). My cats got used to it no problem and the infra red mechanism works ok letting the the cats in and out as desired. BUT .... the intruder cat is somehow still gaining access, somtimes i could hear it coming in when both my cats were with me in the lounge. So i decided to lay in wait to observe how the stray was getting in .... he simply pushes the flap strongly on one side and it opens .... a major design fault on Staywells part, it only has one locking prong on one side, pathetic, i take it they never tested their product. I did contact Staywell about this...
