Celeron 600e = 9.0x Multiplier
Review of Intel Celeron 1 GHz processor by
wildandyc
Advantages: Very Overclockable
Disadvantages: Small cahce
...A 9.0x multiplier is about as far as you can go with a Celeron to acheive the much respected 100Mhz FSB and therefore acheive 900Mhz in the case of the Celeron 2 600e.
DO NOT BUY A CELERON 2 633, 667 OR 700 IF YOU WANT TO OVERCLOCK THEM 100MHZ FSB. Their multipliers are too high unless you are going to liquid cool them!!!
It has to be said that the 0.18 micron die etch has been a god send for overclocking but when the multiplier starts to get silly, atainable overclocking on a locked bus is crazy, hence my suggested max of a Celeron 600e if you're thinking of clocking your new Celeron....

The best chip for money!
Review of Intel Celeron 1 GHz processor by
BejayAlford
Advantages: cheap
Disadvantages: slightly slower
...this is great value for money. The normal intels cost a lot more and are not worth the extra cash. These are reliable, fast and cheap. I've had no problems with crashes....I had a normal intel before and paid way too much for it. I was always frightened of celerons because originally they were the failed chips, but now have been turned into the fastest selling chip and great value for money. They are slightly slower than the real intels but for a bit more you can get a higher MHZ processor that will outperform the equivilent MHz pentium. Go out and buy one, you will not regret it and will have many error free hours playing the latest games or programs with ease....

Celeron 533mhz - not recomended
Review of Intel Celeron 1 GHz processor by
Neil2k
Advantages: Cheap processor
Disadvantages: Slow, small cache,
...I have mixed experiences with these processors, In comparison to AMD's chips, Im afraid Celeron processors do not compare.
My AMD K6-2/450 which worked without fault, was sold and replaced with a Celeron 533Mhz which at the time was of similar cost. Celeron processors were at the time rated quite highly however in comparison to AMD's 450, Graphical benchmarks, Gameplay, High Quality Video files, processor benchmarks all showed a great deal of a decrease in performance with the celeron.
The Celeron runs on a 66mhz bus speed which greatly reduces performance in comparison to processors running at 100mhz bus.
Celeron processors are known for thier ability to be overclocked which can greatly improve performance however this greatly dependant on which mainboard you choose.
Increasing the Memory from 64mb to 128mb made a noticable...

Celeron II - A gone wrong PIII
Review of Intel Celeron 1 GHz processor by
thepanther
Advantages: Pretty fast, PIII core
Disadvantages: Not cheap in budget terms
...The bosses at Intel have finally decided that they cant waste any processors any more. Its takes too much money and time in the industry to manufacture too many chips because they dont have many fabrication plants to do the job. Basically they had to find a way to make lots of different chips very quickly.
Well here's the clever part. The Celeron II (not official name) is simply a PIII, well I say simply a PIII but that's what they are. Only difference is they are faulty PIII's. Not faulty as in they don't work, but faulty as in half of the 256k cache doesn't work. All Intel have done to these chips is disable the bad half of the cache and there you have a shiny new Celeron II. Not bad eh?
Needless to say that then the Celeron II has a good leg to stand on as a budget chip. The core performance of the PIII is there in the background...

Duron Vs. Celeron
Review of AMD Duron by
monkfish
Advantages: Fast, Good Quality, Value For Money
Disadvantages: None Really!
...Why do many people prefer Intel processors to AMD?? It was clearly demonstrated by the K6-2 and Athlon Processors that AMD is miles ahead of the rest for Speed, Quality, Stability and Value for money. Look at the lastest line of processors. AMD's Duron was created for Value and entry level PC users. Just by looking at the Price difference I immediatly decided on the AMD. With the AMD 600MHz costing under £70 ($95)and the celeron 600 costing over £150 ($205)I couldn't justify spending £150 on the Celeron. When I found how easy to install the processor and upgrade the system decided to upgrade my pentium celeron 433 MHz so I could compare the systems. I had them with exactly the same components. In Winbench the Duron System notched up a score of 139 while the celeron system only gained a score of 97. So my opinion is to forget Intel; SAVE...

Affordable processor power
Review of AMD Duron by
Timski
Advantages: Fast & economical
Disadvantages: May require new motherboard
...As part of my new home built system, I decided to go for the budget AMD Duron Processor. Just as Intel have the Celeron processor to make up their budget range for the non-power freaks, so AMD have developed a less expensive version of their Athlon chip.
The Blurb...
The Duron is a derivative of the Athlon processor, which is like a "cut-down" version of their flagship chip. It contains 192 Kb of on-die cache and runs at a speed of 200 MHz thanks to it's Front Side Bus architecture. The original 3DNow set has been improved to Enhanced 3DNow technology which gives far superior graphical feats.
Fitting...
I built my new system from the ground up. For users who just want to upgrade, this may cause a few problems. AMD have re-structured their processor formats, having changed them all to Socket A. Therefore, if your motherboard...

good overclocker
Review of Intel Celeron 1 GHz processor by
craigy
Advantages: good overclocker
Disadvantages: not as good as duron
...The Celeron has been around for a while now and, due to the fact that it is a cut-down version of the Pentium 3 that runs at a slower bus speed (66MHz for the Celeron compared to 100 MHz for the P3), with a little TLC and a lot of cooling, it can often be made to run at speeds far greater than the advertised values. In this respect, it is not as good as AMD's Duron processor (see my review of that for details), but for owners of BX boards, this can be a cheap upgrade (see your motherboard manufacturer's website for details of whether it will run Celerons), as all that is required is the CPU and a *decent* heatsink & fan, rather than a new processor and motherboard.
For example, one of my machines currently has a celeron 600 (this runs a multiplier of 9 at the bus speed of 66MHz) running at 900 MHz (9 * 100MHz). This is a huge...

Overclokable Duron - Get extra 200 MHz
Review of AMD Duron by
Lancer
Advantages: Another 200MHz for peanuts!
Disadvantages: Unsupported by AMD, only supported by OCUK
...The AMD Duron is the relatively new chip from AMD designed to be direct competition for Intel's time honoured Celeron chip. The Celeron is a decent cheap processor, but is nothing when compared to the AMD Duron. The duron is much faster, more stable and ultimately (very important when aimed at this end of the market) is much cheaper. The only thing the celeron has in its favour is the ability to overclock better than the Duron.
This has all changed. Overclockers UK (www.overclockers.co.uk) have modified the AMD Duron chips themselves to unlock the multiplier value and allow exceptionally easy overclocking. They offer a range of Duron chips, each of which has been modified and tested to run at the new value. The lower end of the spectrum offers a Duron 700 which has been guaranteed to run at 900MHz and the site says it is possible...

Performance on a budget
Review of AMD Duron by
Mazz
Advantages: quick, cheap, reliable
Disadvantages: motherboards quite expensive still
...!!
The reason that the Duron is quicker than the original Athlon is to do with it's cache structure and the divider that determines what speed the cache runs at in comparison to the overall clock speed. Yes, as VIA found out, cache can make all that difference.
The Duron is a much more faster chip than Intel's similar offering in the Celeron and yet costs a fraction of the price. I've used it for games such as Kingpin, Unreal and NFS 2000 without so much of even a hint of jerkiness even when detail levels are pumped up full.
The DVD playback on the 600Mhz Duron is also impressive aswell, running very acceptibly without a decoder card.
AMD currently produces the Duron in clock speeds of 600, 650, 700, 750 and 800 MHz and it is not yet clear how far they will ramp up performance and clock speeds....

Top Duron
Review of AMD Duron by
eric54
Advantages: Price, Performance
Disadvantages: None
...I am self employed computer retailer and obviously get to build systems on a regular basis. These systems range from Pentium 3 & 4 and Celeron to AMD Duron & Athlon depending on customers requirements.
For many people todays PC's are overpowered for their needs. The exceptions are obviously gamers, video editors etc and thats why i only recommend 1 processor to the majority and thats the Duron. The exception i recommend the Athlon to them.
The Duron is an absolutely superb processor. It outperforms the Celeron and can hold its own against a P3 and it is so cheap!!. £50 will get you around 750Mhz which is more than enough for the home PC user.
I run a 700 Mhz Duron at home and have had no problems with it. My system is stable, i can play any of today's games (Hardcore gamers go for the Athlon) and deal with any of today's applications...
