Duron Vs. Celeron
Review of AMD Duron by  monkfish

Advantages: Fast, Good Quality, Value For Money
Disadvantages: None Really!

...Why do many people prefer Intel processors to AMD?? It was clearly demonstrated by the K6-2 and Athlon Processors that AMD is miles ahead of the rest for Speed, Quality, Stability and Value for money. Look at the lastest line of processors. AMD's Duron was created for Value and entry level PC users. Just by looking at the Price difference I immediatly decided on the AMD. With the AMD 600MHz costing under £70 ($95)and the celeron 600 costing over £150 ($205)I couldn't justify spending £150 on the Celeron. When I found how easy to install the processor and upgrade the system decided to upgrade my pentium celeron 433 MHz so I could compare the systems. I had them with exactly the same components. In Winbench the Duron System notched up a score of 139 while the celeron system only gained a score of 97. So my opinion is to forget Intel; SAVE... Read review

Intel, making the bucks, the sneaky way
Review of Intel Pentium 4 2 GHz processor by  zero

Advantages: They are very powewrful processors
Disadvantages: Too expensive

...I'm not if AMD have done this but Intel definitely have. When they introduced the PIII 450 MHz for the first time, they did not mention to the public that it was only 10% faster than it's little brother the Pentium II 450MHz processor. When the gigahertz processor was introduced, it was tested by a popular computer magazine. I found the results to be surprising. In some areas of performance the Gigahertz processor was SLOWER than the 850 MHz processor. When ever a new processor is introduced it is always overpriced. This overpricing is not little it is ridicously high. A month or two after the release the prices drop massively. Then soon after a new processor is introduced, faster and more powerful. When this show will end who knows. These very powerful processors don't even operate to maximum performance because of the operating... Read review

good overclocker
Review of Intel Celeron 1 GHz processor by  craigy

Advantages: good overclocker
Disadvantages: not as good as duron

...The Celeron has been around for a while now and, due to the fact that it is a cut-down version of the Pentium 3 that runs at a slower bus speed (66MHz for the Celeron compared to 100 MHz for the P3), with a little TLC and a lot of cooling, it can often be made to run at speeds far greater than the advertised values. In this respect, it is not as good as AMD's Duron processor (see my review of that for details), but for owners of BX boards, this can be a cheap upgrade (see your motherboard manufacturer's website for details of whether it will run Celerons), as all that is required is the CPU and a *decent* heatsink & fan, rather than a new processor and motherboard. For example, one of my machines currently has a celeron 600 (this runs a multiplier of 9 at the bus speed of 66MHz) running at 900 MHz (9 * 100MHz). This is a huge... Read review

Pentium 3- are they worth the cash
Review of Intel Pentium III 1.13 GHz processor by  monk13i

Advantages: Widely available, reliable
Disadvantages: High price, relativly low performance

...The pentium 3 is available at speeds ranging from 450MHZ to 1GHZ ( 1000MHZ ) and the cache ( processor memory ) is typically 256Kb. The processor enhancments are the ever popular MMX. The main thing that attracts people to the Pentium 3 is publicity it is given by the people at Intel. Most shop bought computers will contain a pentium processor of some sort. There is no dispute over the power increase over previous pentium models and over those of a lower clock speed. How does the pentium 3 hold its own against its main competitor the AMD processors. The honest answer is not too well. Firstly the cost of a pentium processor is a lot more than its AMD equivalent, the benchmarks of the processor compared with AMD do not wield good results. The AMD equivalents outperform the Pentium 3's every time. There are three types of processor... Read review

The best chip for money!
Review of Intel Celeron 1 GHz processor by  BejayAlford

Advantages: cheap
Disadvantages: slightly slower

...this is great value for money. The normal intels cost a lot more and are not worth the extra cash. These are reliable, fast and cheap. I've had no problems with crashes....I had a normal intel before and paid way too much for it. I was always frightened of celerons because originally they were the failed chips, but now have been turned into the fastest selling chip and great value for money. They are slightly slower than the real intels but for a bit more you can get a higher MHZ processor that will outperform the equivilent MHz pentium. Go out and buy one, you will not regret it and will have many error free hours playing the latest games or programs with ease.... Read review

Excellent gaming processor, BUY ONE NOW
Review of AMD K-6 by  Lancer

Advantages: Cheap, powerful, fast, easily overclockable
Disadvantages: Not as fast as the Athlon, no manual with my processor

...AMD have been making processors for almost as long as the regarded 'champion', Intel. Although there early 486 processors where popular, the performance lacked and never really compared to the Intel i486. This trend of being slightly 'behind' the forefront of processor technology continued into the early years of the Pentium. However, this all changed when AMD released the K6-2 and K6-3 series of processors as direct competition with the PII and PIII. Although the K6-2 450 was not the fastest AMD processor available when I purchased, it was the best when considering power-per-pound. At only £49, for a fully functioning 450MHz processor with 3D NOW instruction set, this was an excellent buy. My first impressions when seeing the benchmarks between my old system (200MHz) and the new one were pleased, very pleased. The index had... Read review

Lots of improvements still not enough.
Review of Intel Pentium 4 3 GHz processor by  cynthia11

Advantages: 1 mb L2 cache, cheaper.
Disadvantages: Your old socket 478 might not work.

...offer some kind virus protection by implementing an execution protection (NX) technology. The (NX) technology separates the application and data to prevent buffer overflows. This technique is the most common practices of the virus authors in order to sabotage your system. Even though the Prescott supports 478 socket boards you will have some trouble dealing with it. The Prescott is rated at 103 watts which is above the voltage regulations of older socket 478 boards. For the benefit of those people who plan to buy this one here are some of the compatible mobo’s. 1. ABIT IC7-MAX 3 2. ABIT A17 Intel claims that a bios update should do the trick. With the introduction of a new core the confusion adds-up for those people who are planning to buy an Intel chip. Intel has 3 types of cores 1. Northwood core(533 MHz and 800 MHz front side buses... Pentium III - More for your money
Review of Intel Pentium III 933 MHz processor by  Willsy

Advantages: Reliable
Disadvantages: Cost? ( see opinion )

...tag given to Intel processors is somewhat unjustified. For example my PIII 600 in May 2000 - cost £240 running at 800mhz. An 800mhz PIII at the time was approx £500, enough to get a top of the range graphics card and change. Admittedly there are some "hidden" costs to the overclocked version e.g. a good quality mainboard, roomy case for good airflow, and a better heatsink, but I think that these are good practice in building any computer, the other minus is there's no guarantee that the processor you get will sucessfuly overclock. I would however still recommend the Pentium III, it's a good, fast and stable processor even when pushed towards it's limits.... Read review

Review of Intel Pentium D 945 / 3.4 GHz processor by  pfishers

Advantages: Dual Core, Fast Clock Speed, Overclocking, 4mb cach
Disadvantages: slower than the newer core 2 duo range

...I have had this processor for almost a year now, the price i paid at purchase was around £99. I have had no problems with the processor and it has worked well for me. I have this processor installed in the following rig and it has worked great for both gaming and work based activity. Rig: Processor: Intel Pentium D 945 / 3.4 GHz processor (This one) MotherBoard: Asus P5N32-SLI SE Deluxe Ram: 3GB (3x1GB Sticks) Graphics: Nvidia 7600GT 256mb HDD: 2x250GB and a 160gb (all SATAII) Disk Drives: DVD-RW (Dual Layer) I use this system for gaming and the processor has done a very good job of playing games, Ripping and Burning music and movies and a lot of Compression and De-Compression. Processor Specs: Processor Type: Intel Pentium D 945 Clock Speed: 3.4 GHz Bus Speed: 800 MHz Cache... Read review

Pentium 4 Interface
Review of Intel Pentium 4 2 GHz processor by  rpgmagician

Advantages: much better than SLOT1
Disadvantages: don't know

...The Pentium 4 interfaces with the motherboard using a new socket, named Socket-423. In fact, after the first half of 2001 the Pentium 4 will start to be available in both a Socket-423 and a Socket-478 version. The latter will be due to replace Socket-423 much like Socket-370 replaced Slot-1. For those of you that currently have Slot-1 CPUs, do you want to be in the same situation with the Pentium 4 as you current are with your CPU? In contrast, AMD plans to stick with Socket-A for at least a little while longer. The next generation Athlon and Duron CPUs, according to AMD, will work in current Socket-A boards however you will obviously need a new board with 266MHz (133MHz DDR) FSB support if you want to get the most out of a 266MHz FSB CPU. Without looking at benchmarks, the short lived nature of the Socket-423 interface... Read review
