...stations. There is a slight air of sleaze for me in the concept of the transient railway hotel. In the case of the Intercity in Bremen, neither of these situations is true - it's not an architectural gem and it's not a sleazy dive either. What you get is a very nice, clean, modern hotel that's right next to the city's very attractive red-brick hauptbahnhof and right in front of the bus and tram station. As you can imagine, this isn't going to be the quietest hotel you've ever stayed in and if you open the windows, you will get a lot of noise. But with the windows closed it's not at all bad and since the aircon works in summer - not something you can take for granted in Northern Germany - you can easily live with the windows closed. Review of InterCity Hotel, Bremen

Intercity at it's best

Advantages: Fast, reliable, very comfortable, frequent.
Disadvantages: Local trains get in the way too often

...most other trains in the country (take note virgin!). The other newer trains are formed of brand new class 180 'Adelante's, which look rather sexy. Unlike the virgin voyager, these trains are actually very comfortable and provide a smooth ride. These are used mainly on the shorter-distance routes such as those to Cheltenham and Hereford, mainly due to their short formation and mild vibration when travelling at speed. First Great Western were the first Intercity operator to be privatised, introduce a quiet coach, introduce a family coach, introduce new trains, and the first operator to fully refurbish it's fleet. Another fleet overhaul is due shortly and things are only going to improve....

Review of First Great Western

Not perfect but the price is right.

Advantages: Price
Disadvantages: Seats are uncomfortable, especially for long haul.

...I have used megabus a number of times over the past 5 years but most recently in october of 2008 although the service has been fairly consistent so I would imagine it is similar now. Most often I have travelled from Edinburgh/Glasgow to London and vice versa but have also gone on shorter trips from central Scotland up to Inverness and Aberdeen and once to Newcastle. The buses are basic and leg-room can be a problem but I don't find they differ vastly from other intercity bus companies. The buses have always been reasonably clean and they stop at least once on longer journies at service stations. On two occasions the heating was broken-once it failed to work on a mid-winter overnight journey which was freezing and another trip it became boiling hot so everyone was sweating all night. Discover New Zealand By Coach

Advantages: Economic quality service with independence

...trip with some trepidation. Hopefully I would not make a spectacle of myself and embarrass our fellow travellers. Looking back now I need not have worried. The whole coach based round trip was an absolute pleasure, a marvellous experience, and totally carefree. So what exactly wrought the transformation? In a nutshell it was the spectacular beauty of New Zealand itself, plus the splendid coach service that was available for us to use. The New Zealand wide integrated coach network (operated by InterCity Group) consists of InterCity Coachlines which "offered scheduled quality point to point bus transport on modern coaches at economic fares nationwide" and Newmans Coachlines which "provided premium coach services between major cities and to and from New Zealand's key tourist destinations." The unknown InterCity operator by Anglia Railways

Advantages: Fast, good value tickets, friendly staff
Disadvantages: Delays (sometimes!)

...Name high-speed former InterCity operators in this country and Anglia is not usually one that people come up with. It was! It's now known as Anglia Railways, and operates high-speed trains between London Liverpool Street and Norwich. It also operates the Harwich Boat Train,local services in East Anglia to places such as Lowestoft and the new CrossRail service to Basingstoke from East Anglia. I took a journey with a friend of mine to Norwich one Saturday and caught a service that stopped at only two stations to Norwich. I purchased a Saver ticket for approx £20 with a Young Persons Railcard. After paying with a £5 voucher and obtaining the Weekend First upgrade, the total ticket cost a mere £25, which for First Class travel is a damn good price. Weekend First is a supplement to upgrade to First Class on Saturdays and Sundays. It is £5...
