Excellent text for med students & junior doctors
Review of Clinical Medicine - Michael Clark, Parveen Kumar by
soowl
Advantages: easy to read and understand, well illustrated and colourful
Disadvantages: practically none and definitely not for senior doctors!
...This is an absolutely must read (and buy!) medical textbook for any medical students or even junior doctors. For the former the textbook gives an excellent overview of nearly all the commonly encountered diseases and clinical cases in clinical practice. Areas to be recommended are that each disease is written in a very systemic way: definition, epidemiology, pathophysiology, etiology, pathology, differential diagnosis, investigations, treatment and management, prognosis. Whereas for the young fresh graduates it gives them the opportunity to grasp and revise the basics in internal medicine at the very beginning of their medical career. The layout of the text is visually friendly and colourful. The diagrams and boxes are superb as they provide readers very useful and helpful "glance" of various diseases. What else can I say when...

Old surgical instruments look like torture weapons
Review of The Old Operating Theatre Museum & Herb Garret (London) by
gogaTSV
Advantages: Throws you back in old times and lets you experience the atmosphere
Disadvantages: Hard to get up there if you have infants or special needs
...I personally find it hard to give an objective opinion on this place. I can probably spend hours just standing and breathing the smell of all the medicinal herbs and being bizzarely fascinated by ancient jars with still identifiable internal organs and surgical instruments that look more like torture weapons.
The museum is situated on the original site of St Thomas' Hospital. The latter was founded in 13th century and was a mixed order of Augustinian monks and nuns, dedicated to Thomas Becket which provided shelter and treatment for the poor, sick and homeless. The place does not really consist of much:
The operating theatre - the oldest surviving in the country and The herb garret - used by hospital's apothecary
Thats it, two rooms connected by a short corridor... but what a character.
The museum collection is mostly of the 19th...

Relax...
Review of Shiatsu Therapy by
Lisa2
Advantages: too many to list
Disadvantages: may seem a little scary at first if you are not used to it.
...I've been learning Shiatsu Massage at university for about a year and a half now and would heartedly reccommend it to anyone. The Japenese massage uses static pressure to relax the muscles and soothe away aches, pains and tension. It is good for just about any aiolment or complaint whilst being amazingly relaxing for the mind at the same time. My favourite is called 'cat padding' and is applied to the shoulder muscles. Very relaxing.
As with all eastern medicines, there is the belief that your body is affected internally by different muscles and points on the outside. So this can have wonderful effects on the inside to. Prices vary according to practices, routines and length of session. This is definately something to be tried, and it really works. So find yourself a reputable practitioner and relax.......

Simply the Boots
Review of Boots (Shop) by
beckystar
Advantages: Advantage points, deals, advice
Disadvantages: none
...Boots the Chemist is an international company who offer a range of products, and services.
They offer a prescription service, where by you can contact your doctor with the prescription items you need. Boot’s then arrange for the prescription to be collected from your surgery, and process it –ready for you to pick up. This service requires 48 hours at least though. Alternatively, you can simply hand your prescription over the counter, and wait around 15-30 minutes (depending on how busy they are).
They also sell other medical items, OTC (over the counter) medicines; family planning and pregnancy testing; music/video; perfumery; make up; photographs; certain insurances; and more.
In addition at Boots you can get an ‘Advantage Card’. This then entitles you to 4 points for every one pound you spend...

A Great News Weekly
Review of The Economist by
ashford
Advantages: Incisive journalism. Informative. Great writing
Disadvantages: Expensive
...of the likes of medicine, technology and scientific developments are far sighted and most interesting.
In my view it is less biased than Time or Newsweek and is a wonderful read. It is not parochial but is truly internationally minded,Some of its schools briefs have been absolutely brilliant, as have a number of the business surveys. If you want to be well informed then I would strongly recommend reading the Economist !...

Add some Spice into your Life.
Review of Cinnamon Bark Oil by
wulise
Advantages: Treats many conditions but for interal use an essence must be used, NOT the Essential Oil.
Disadvantages: Can burn the skin.
...Cinnamon Oil is also known as Cinnamomum Zeylicum. Cinnamon has a long history of use in India and was first used medicinally in Egypt and parts of Europe from about 500 BC. This essential oil is extracted from the Cinnamon trees of Sri Lanka, from from the leaves and bark of the tree. The better essential oil is actually extracted from the leaves. As well as being one of the world's most important spices, cinnamon is an ancient herbal medicine, first written about in the Jewish Torah. Traditionally, the herb was taken for colds, flu and digestive problems, and it is still used in much the same way today.
The colour of the oil is Golden Yellow/Brown. The consistency is slightly light yet oily in feeling. The aroma note is middle and yet the initial aroma is strong. The aromatic description is that it is much richer in aroma than ground...

Hot and Spicy Winter Warmer...
Review of Dr Stuart's Apple and Ginger Fruit Tea by
srxwilson
Advantages: strong, spicy and delicious
Disadvantages: it won't get you drunk!
...converted from conventional medicine whilst studying the role of traditional plants in rural medicine in Central Africa and he insists on only the highest quality. The ingredients in the teas are grown to exceed internationally respected German standards for medicinal herbs, which means the teas have very high levels of essential oils compared to other brands of tea, and pack quite a punch by comparison.
I bought mine from Asda for 98p, though I have also seen it on sale at Holland and Barrett.
When you open the box you breathe in the sort of spicy, pungent aroma of ginger, cinnamon and apple that could scent a whole room. Each of the twenty bags is inside a paper envelope, and comes with a tab and string. I put one in a mug and pour on the boiling water, noting the instructions that the bag needs to steep for at least five minutes.

AROMABOMBASTIC PART ONE
Review of *Aromatherapy in general* by
kleft
Advantages: A fresh change from the norm
Disadvantages: Not guaranteed to work, but is anyhting else really is?
...complimentary therapies, aromatherapy deviates
from the traditional route of orthodox medicine. It aims to approach
the ailments using the concept of concentrating at the subject (I.e.
the patient) and trying to understand and incorporate their character,
lifestyle, diet, factors that trigger their stress, etc and tackle
that , as opposed to solely target the symptoms. After taking all that
into context, the aromatherapist will advise on what oil or combination
of oils to use, and may also give general advice on diet, exercise
and other aspects of the patient's lifestyle.
AROMATHERAPY THROUGH HISTORY
----------------------------
Aromatic substances have been used for many centuries for various
purposes. Civilizations including The Arabic, Babylonian, Chinese,
Greek, Indian and Roman have benefited from them.
Egyptian priest-physicians used...
