Internal 56K Modem from Creative

Advantages: Easy to fit, good software package included, good brand
Disadvantages: only one line in - no audio sockets or line out

...From the well known Creative (SoundBlaster) stables comes this internal V90 PCI 56K modem. Complete with cable, drivers and some usefull software - Mediaring talk, Quicklink Message Centre and Bitware fax/communications. It only has a line-in socket on the back so you cannot 'daisy-chain' your telephone from this modem. I found the card easy to fit and configure and was up and running in less than 10 minutes - just fit the moden into your case and boot-up, Windows discovered it had new hardware installed and then asked for the location of the drivers, I pointed it at the correct directory on the CD drive and that was it! It connected first and every consequent time at a minimum of 48K and once at 50.3K Good product well worth considering for home use....

V92 Ready Internal Modem

Advantages: Cheap, Performs well, Reliable, Noise Resistant, V92 Ready
Disadvantages: No visible lights or on-screen indication

...Whilst browsing the shelves of my local Dixon's store, I found a Modular Technology V92 Ready Internal PCI modem. The price was just £24.99 so I thought it worth a try. The modem fits in an empty pci slot and is based on the lucent chipset (www.lucent.com). The card went in easily and the software installed fine on my Windows ME machine. The manual gives detailed instructions on how to install and configure the software, and the box contains trial cd's for aol, compuserve, freeserve etc., fine if you don't have an ISP already. The lucent site has links to the very latest drivers, and the connection speed is as good as any external modem I've used from this location. The unit seems to be very resiliant to noise on the line as I have picked the telephone up downstairs and dialed a number before realising I was on the net...

An excellent modem

Advantages: reliable, fast

...My ZOOM 56K V90 Dual Modem has been the best modem I have ever had. When I purchased a new machine it came with its own PCI modem, however this soon came out and was replace with my trusty zoom when I started getting cut off from my ISP. I regularly axchieve speeds of up to 52K and with a usual connection at 49,333 bps. The modem is fitted internally and has been in service now for almost 2 years without any sign of breakdown. Trusty, reliable and fast are the best way I can describe it. With a Flash Circuit I can even upgrade it should the need arise. A great modem at a very reasonable price. Customer support is excellent too....

Internal Mangler

Advantages: Eclectic, surprising, energetic

...This is Clinic's first album proper after last year's hugely exciting EP collection. Where that compilation presented a hotch-potch of baffling instrumentals and buzzing low budget, home recorded psychedelic garage epics, "Internal Wrangler" consists of... erm, more of the same, actually. The sound of the album is very rough and ready and there have been numerous negative opinions expressed about it's overwhelming similarity to the Velvet Underground's sound, but don't be taken in. Clinic have taken their blueprint and added helium-pitched, barking vocals (a little like Brian Molko out of Placebo being tortured with a mangler), Mary Chain thrash guitars and even Krautrock rhythms. ...The Netgear DG834PN is the latest version of the DG834 and combines an ADSL modem with a wireless router and 4 port switch. In plain English, this plugs in your phone socket and allows one or more PCs to share the connection via either a wired or wireless link. The modem part is ADSL2+ ready and should work with even the fastest ISP offerings out there which as at Dec 2006 are around 12mbps in the UK. ...I was given this modem by Vodafone when I signed up for their 'At home' service. In case you are interested this gives you broadband and home phone if you are already a mobile customer. The modem is great, it looks sleek and modern. There are four lights, the bottom light shows it is plugged in to the mains, the second shows it is communicating with your computer, third shows the broadband connection is working and finally the fourth shows that you are actually connected to the internet. I did not have to install anything, just plugged it in, entered my username and password and hey presto it worked. I am using Windows 2000 by the way and it is rare not to have to install drivers for any new hardware. The lights are actually very helpful, a while ago I had major problems connecting to the net.
