IPAQ is a dinosaur
Advantages: Good screen and processor for a small thing, connects to PC easily
Disadvantages: No phone, so limited connectivity
...I have had several Ipaqs which I primarily used as a portable diary so it would sync my diary with the one on my desktop which my secretary organised. It meant that if I was out of the office I could make an appointment knowing what was already in the diary and when I get back I would just plug it in to its docking system on the desk, the diary would update and she would immediately see the appointment I had put in. It uses active sync.
Great. And the idea of having Windows functionality in a palm top was once a real advance.
But then the blackberry appeared. Same functionality as the IPAQ, but with internet access, email etc, so they surely do so much more?
Things have moved on. Mobiles phones such as the Apple iphone, and all sorts of other gismos now have the Wi-Fi, high speed mobile data connections and GPS that I used to...

The Compact iPAQ
Advantages: Lots and lots of features, light, durable, easy to use (once you know how).
Disadvantages: Can be fiddly, menu's are not always easy to use.
...This is a mobile e-mail experience which many of us have only ever dreamt of. Forget using your fiddly little mobile phone keypad the iPAQ 914c has a full "QWERTY" keyboard that obviously makes text entry extremely fast and efficient.
Scrolling through e-mails is made easy with a "3-way" track wheel which has a versatility rivaling the trackpad on many laptops. The iPAQ 914c is compatible with a variety of applications on/offline and when you're driving (especially helpful in a country where holding a phone whilst driving is illegal) you can have your email read aloud and reply without typing a word. It is possible to make calls and surf the web in a variety of countries around the world using 3G and Quad-band wireless technology.
The iPAQ 914c performs assisted GPS and even hap Google Maps built in for easy route planning. Using...

HP Ipaq - a mixed bag.
Advantages: Battery life quite good, well built
Disadvantages: small screen, poor phone reception
...Background:
The company I work for distributes my jobs to the field via a PDA phone.
This system was introduced last February when we started out using the disastrously poor quality O2 XDA IIi pda phone, which suffers badly from poor battery life and an overwhelming aptitude to crash several times a day.
In an attempt to improve the situation the company is trialling a couple of new handsets, one of which is the HP IPaq.
It arrived on Friday so I charged it up to put it through its paces.
I was a bit disappointed in the screen size, it is about two thirds of the size of the XDA and it is hard enough to work on that one.
The overall feel of the PDA is good, it feels solid but I can't yet tell you how it responds to being bounced off the floor.
The Wireless function works well enough but it was a let down to...

HP iPaq Enterprise Handheld
Advantages: Easy to use.
Disadvantages: None yet. Will update.
...I have just joined Ciao community to put the record straight on this PDA. A previous Ciao reviewer has given a negative review. I have only owned the PDA (HP iPaq 214 Enterprise Handheld) for two days. I believe I was one of the first in the UK to receive this machine as it became available from 25th January 2008. I was almost put off buying the iPaq by the other review here, but decided to give it a try. I am glad, as the PDA does everything a PDA should and at a very good speed and price. The other review here is definitely not for the iPaq 214. How did he get it some months before anyone else? The description bears no resemblance to my iPaq 214. The reviewer says the camera is appalling and defunct - it does not have a camera at all, so that clears that up. It does have 128 MB SDRAM and 256MB flash ROM, mine also came with 1GB SD card...

HP iPAQ 114 - A fine 'basic' PDA
Advantages: Value for money, fast processor, stylus
Disadvantages: Weight (too light!), lots of pressure needed to use touch screen
...HP iPaq 114 Classic
Background
HP's iPAQ 114 Classic is amongst one of the newest models released by HP in its completely overhauled range. This new series of PDAs consists of; the 100 & 200 series which are basic PDAs running on Windows Mobile 6.0, the 300 series (which has built in GPS) and the 600 & 900 series which have built in cellular phones and GPS system.
I am reviewing a model which sits in the 100 series.
What's in the box
The list below shows the contents of a HP iPAQ 114 Classic box as bought in the UK;
- HP iPAQ 114 PDA
- Stylus
- USB Sync cable which also doubles up as a mains charger (with the supplied adapter)
- Leather Carry Case
- Drivers containing software for Windows XP users (Windows Vista has native support in the means of Windows Mobile Device Center')
- Various literature including user...

Pricey but priceless Ipaq4700
Advantages: Easily read screen, loads of memory, and easy to use.
Disadvantages: It is pricey, and written instructions were sparse
...Having owned a Psion and a Palm, I had given up on PDA's because their screens seemed too small and hard to read.
Reviews on this Ipaq seemed to promise more ease of use.
It is a crucial issue, and hands-on is the only way to be sure.
I tried the machine in PCWorld and again in Dixons. Neither shop tried to pressurise me into buying - they realise it is a costly buy.
In Use
Setting it into use was not at all difficult.
Instructions for linking to a PC were clear, and the software ran first time.
The screen is very bright, large, good resolution and easy to read.
Battery life is good, and I have used it in Africa with three or four days between charges. It is possible to buy extra batteries, though you are talking about £60 for a standard battery and about £90 for a higher capacity.
I bought a lead for use...

Compaq ipaq 3870
Advantages: Great build quality. good range of accesories
Disadvantages: Battery life not great and battery built into unit
...I have had my ipaq since early august. The pda has proved to be reliable and very useful. I use it on a daily basis and have yet to find any real problems.
The ipaq has one of the best screens of any pda and has 64mb of memory. You get pocket pc versions of most of the usual microsoft programs. Beware that you know that these are not the same as the microsoft aplications on the pc. They are cut down versions and although you can exchange data between the pda and the pc don't expect that the documents will keep the same formating if you transfer one written in Microsoft office. This is due to the limitations of memory in the pda. (This is the same for all pda's not just the ipaqs)
The aplications you get include:
Outlook: email, address book, tasks ect.
Word: word prescessing.
Exel: spread sheet.
Internet explorer.

iPAQ a punch!!
Advantages: Clear screen, ease of use, size
Disadvantages: Fiddly for goalkeepers and people wearing boxing gloves
...Never one to properly maintain a diary, and with an increasingly busy life, I decided to buy myself the HP 1940 iPAQ Palmtop. I've now owned it for about three months and although it's about £240 more expensive than a diary, it's money well spent. I could now write huge lists of specifications to do with it but instead I'll describe my day and how I use this little computer.
I wake up at around 7 and turn on my Desktop PC and go on-line. I then attach my iPAQ to it using the Microsoft Activesync software that comes with the HP1940. After a straightforward installation when I bought it, I can now plug the two computers together through my PC's USB socket and they synchronise with one another. The best thing about this is a faciltity called AvantGo. This downloads news pages from sources such as Reuters, BBC, Guardian, Times etc onto...

Ipaq packs a punch
Advantages: 64MB RAM, Beautifully Clear Screen, Fast
Disadvantages: No Compact Flash slot. Lack of Networking options
...Around 3 years ago, I reviewed an HP Jornada 525 Pocket PC on Ciao, under a different account. After a brief but enjoyable foray into the Windows Smartphone market, I decided to come back to the Pocket PC, and see what it has to offer.
The Ipaq 1930 is Hewlett Packard's entry level Pocket PC. Despite it being bottom of the pile as far as price goes, the specification is far from low, and the size and portability is by far the best I have seen on he market.
Hardware
--------------
The Ipaq 1930 differs from most Pocket PCs, in that it packs a Samsung S3C2410 Processor as its Central Processing Unit, as opposed to the more usual Intel XScale. The Samsung processor is 100% Xscale compatible, just like an AMD processor is 100% compatible with Intel ones, so there is no need to worry about software not working.
The S3C2410 in...

IPAQ SchmIPAQ
Advantages: big enough too see off a serious mugger
Disadvantages: heavy enough to prevent escape from a serious mugger
...OK ? here goes...
I have, arrayed in front of me, a Palm V and a Compaq IPAQ 3850. I am crying quietly. Why? Because having been quite content with my Palm V for several years I recently convinced myself that I needed an IPAQ. What a prat. To exacerbate matters, I didn't just settle for a basic unit. Oh no, I had to go the whole hog and get the SatNav jacket and all the full nine yards didn't I? After a brief (and I MEAN brief) honeymoon with the thing I have come to the conclusion that the IPAQ is twice the price, twice the size, twice the weight, twice as bug-ridden and has half the battery life of the Palm. As if that wasn't enough, it has an operating system which, like its big brother Windows, needs to have a lie down every now and again. To accuse it of being underdeveloped would be to do an injustice to underdeveloped...
