...We stayed at the 4* Riu Canella hotel for two weeks in June this year (2005) and thoroughly enjoyed our visit, it was one of the most relaxing holidays we have had for many years. The Riu Canela hotel has 347 rooms all en suite and most with a balcony or terrace. As the hotel has been open for about twenty years some of the rooms have a rather 'tired' air about them and probably would benefit from refurbishment. However having said that, the room we occupied was well appointed and spotlessly clean. *********************************** SITUATION The hotel is located at Canela Beach on the Isla Canela, Costa de la Luz, Spain. Isla Taboga - Island of Flowers

Advantages: Relaxing escape, stone's throw from Panama City
Disadvantages: No atmospheric beachside bar to enjoy a beer at sunset

...Isla Taboga is a lovely little island just half an hour from Panama City's Harbour. It's quite small, and not touristy. Just a little town, surrounded by water with a great view of the Panama City skyline! A great place to visit for a day if you're in the City and want an easy escape. Take a book and some snacks, or grab a bite at one of the local eateries, and just enjoy the white sand beach and calm warm waters. It's now $11 return by boat, which leaves from the Amador Causeway - pay no more than $5 by taxi from the City! The island itself is an array of small streets and hidden paths and steps, leading up and around the packed little houses of the town. It has a small church in the middle, which is supposedly the second oldest church in the Western Hemisphere. It also has an art centre / community project in construction...

...On Tuesday 27 March, my son turned three making him officially a "big boy" as he reminds us on at least an hourly basis. His dad and I thought it only appropriate to celebrate this graduation into "big-boyhood" by buying him his first "big boy" bike. Kyle is an extremely active and strong boy and the level of destruction he can cause is extraordinary to say the least so it was vital that we found a bike that could withstand the endurance test that is hurricane Kyle and unfortunately, it was doubtful that the Spiderman bike from Argos he had his eye on was going to do the trick. Advantages: Reasonable at half price, often on offer at Tesco
Disadvantages: Only a moderate expression of Cabernet Sauvignon

...I admit to being obsessed with the usually delightful combination of Chile and Cabernet Sauvignon as it more often than not gives me a luscious hit of alcoholic Ribena. The Cab Sauv grape is famous for deliciously aromatic blackcurrant aromas and is able to replicate this among a spectrum of various producer countries. This style of wine can often be found at a reasonable price so while in Tesco I snapped up a bottle of Isla Negra (Black Island) Cabernet Sauvignon on offer at £3.49 (normal price is an unlikely £6.99 !). This wine is made by Vina Cono Sur who in my opinion produce very drinkable wines with the Cono Sur Pinot Noir a real standout. ...Isla Mujeres is a fishing island, that has yet remained relatively untouched by tourism. It is very 'authentic' and un-commercialised. The whole place has a relaxed atmosphere, with people sitting round chatting and enjoying a sol or two whilst working. The island is situated across from Cancun and yet is absolutely worlds apart from it. We visited Isla Mujeres only for one day, on a catemeran trip we took whilst staying in Playa Del Carmen (although the boat trip departed from Cancun). The water surrounding the island is absolutely crystal clear. Looking down from out catamaran we could see the sea bed clearly when the water was roughly 12m deep, that's how clear it was! You can see turtles and sting rays and if you take a boat trip you have the opportunity to snorkel near a coral reef. The fish were quite plentiful...

...I like Cancun but I love Isla Mujeres. Isla is a little slip of an island, only five miles long and 4 miles off the coast of loud brash Cancun. Our first visit to Isla was two years ago when we travelled there as a day trip from Cancun which is how most people discover it. This year we went back for more and stayed on the island at the Avalon Reef Club, an all inclusive at the north end of the island.
