Isles of Scilly-Silly not to be missed

Advantages: No crime, peaceful, good weather, lovely scenery
Disadvantages: Expensive

...The Isles of Scilly lie 28 miles off Lands End off the Cornish coast, and is the most South-Westerly part of the British Isles. Out of the 100 or so tiny islands, only 5 of these are inhabited, with St Mary's being the largest and main Island. The name "Scilly" is thought to come from the Viking word "Syllorgar" and the Romans "Sully" meaning sun Islands (the 'C' added in the 16th Century). *****************************St Mary's******************************* St Mary's is the largest (at 2 1/2 miles by 1 3/4) and main Island that people stay on for their holiday, and has the most hotels, guest houses and self catering accomadation available. There is also a large campsite positioned up on the Garrison, which is not far to walk down into the town centre and is relatively cheap at £5-£6 per person per night. There are 6...

Three Girls...and a Tent....

Advantages: Beautiful, relaxing, largely unspoiled, friendly
Disadvantages: The boat trip...!

...Three Girls and a Tent?.was to be the theme for my most recent holiday. When my elder sister rang me back in February this year and asked if I fancied a camping holiday, I thought about it for an hour and decided that this would be a fantastic opportunity for a very different holiday and so despite the fact we hadn't camped since the Girl Guide trip some 28 years previously, our five day trip was duly booked! I had seen the Isles of Scilly on TV shows, including Coast, and read about the Islands in the Sunday newspapers, and I was delighted that I had the opportunity to visit the place for myself. Fast forward to the night prior and I drove down to my Sister's house in Truro ready for the boat trip the following morning. By this time, her 16 year old daughter decided to have a teen strop, the bottom line being the lack...

Murder in the Scilly Isles

Advantages: Pleasant reading
Disadvantages: Nothing particularly outstanding about it

...dead with her head smashed in at the foot of a quarry on the peaceful Scilly Isles. Her father and the locals are all convinced that a newcomer to the island, a former pop-star called Vince Peters, is responsible for her death, although there is initially no reason to believe that she has been killed. Once it is definite that the girl was murdered, unable to cope with the case on their own, the local police call in Wycliffe and his team to help with the investigation. Despite the locals' insistence that the murderer must be Vince Peters, Wycliffe is not so sure. He begins his own investigation, without paying attention to anything but the facts, and soon begins to realise that the case is not as straightforward as others would have him believe. The characters Superintendent Wycliffe is not the most exciting fictional detective I have...

Good Bye to all that

Advantages: beautiful nature, very exclusive
Disadvantages: ridiculously expensive and tiresome to get there

...Sometimes we all feel like getting away from it all, find a small island, and live like Robinson in a small paradise of our own, if only for a short time. I thought I had found that spot on earth when I browsed through my favourite travel website, the exclusive and little known www.vladi-private-islands.de. Vladi advertised a small hotel and holiday cottages on Tresco, one of the five populated islands of the Isles of Scilly, off the coast of Cornwall. These islands have often been linked to the history of lost civilisations: are these maybe the mountain peaks of Atlantis, or the remains of the lost land of Lyonesse? Just the right mystical setting to follow the trail of another myth: Robinson's lonesome life on a distant island. Although, admittedly, I had not planned to stay there alone, or with a servant called Friday, but...

Review of Isles of Scilly (England)

I'm sure this was paradise.

Advantages: A quiet and peaceful holiday destination
Disadvantages: No shops for the shopaholics

...BRYHER??Isles of Scilly. What a beautiful island to visit. Where is it? To look at the lovely white sand beaches, you may think that it is somewhere tropical, but you will find it in the South West of England, 28 miles south west of Lands End, in the county of Cornwall. It is one of a group of around 100 small islands named the Isles of Scilly, which are surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. But something called the North Atlantic Drift warms the islands, giving them a much milder climate than the mainland, with more sunshine, less rainfall and little or no frost and snow, allowing much beautiful flora and fauna to be found. Also migrating birds sometimes stop off for a rest, if on a long flight. These islands are owned by the ?Duchy of Cornwall?. Back in the mid 1830?s a merchant banker named Augustus Smith, (also...

The Misty Isle

Advantages: Stunning landscape, nice towns to visit
Disadvantages: None

...The Isle of Skye is somewhere I have wanted to visit my whole life, but have never had the chance. The Scottish Isles for me have a sort of mystique about them, the isolation and the tradition they have, but Skye has always been the one I?ve wanted to go to. I think a lot of it has to do with my favourite band, Runrig, being from there ? their songs are often about the landscape they grew up in, and they even have a song called Skye. Finally, at the end of September this year, I went to the island with my parents. Having been staying on the mainland for several days in rubbish weather, the first remotely decent day we had we jumped in the car and shot across the bridge, as they knew how excited I was to go to the island, and we didn?t want to miss the best weather we were likely to have (best in this sense is mainly dry with showers...

Tranquillity in the Atlantic

Advantages: Truly remote
Disadvantages: Not remote enough!

...Tranquillity is closer than you think. Earlier this year I spent a week in the Scilly Isles, well I tell a lie, I spent a week amongst the Scilly Isles on 36 feet of Yacht. Anyone who’s ever travelled by boat, especially a small one will tell you there is something special about arriving somewhere by water. Forget the hassle of airports, the smell of train stations and the queue for Big Macs at the motorway services; you just cruise in, drop anchor, stick a bottle of wine in a bucket of seawater to chill, drop the tender (dingy, with an outboard engine (if you’re lucky)) in the water and head for the key side pub. And where better to do this than the Isles of Scilly. We arrived in St Marys (the largest of the Islands) on a calm May evening. We’d had to motor from Penzance due to a complete lack on wind...

Duntulm Castle, Isle of Skye

Advantages: Free to visit
Disadvantages: Only ruins

...When you are on the Isle of Skye you are never very far from a castle. These castles come in many different shapes and sizes. Dunvegan is the islands most famous and most visited castle but if castles are your thing and you want to avoid the ridiculous admission charges of Dunvegan then there are plenty more to choose from. Duntulm Castle stands on the rocky north coast of Skye on the western tip of the Trotternish peninsula. It was only a few miles from where I was staying in Uig and as it was clearly marked on the tourist map I thought that I ought to check it out. I visited on a sunny day in May 2009 and the first thing that struck me was its location. I know that by their definition as a defensive structure castles always occupy a prominent piece of land but the ruins of Duntulm Castle are quite literally perched on the edge...

JEWEL OF THE ISLE

Advantages: Gorgeous designer & unusual clothing
Disadvantages: No changing facilities for the disabled

...Famous for its mountainous and breathtaking scenery, The Isle of Skye ? situated off the West coast of Mainland Scotland - is the largest and best known of the Inner Hebrides. Renowned for its natural beauty and therefore a magnate for climbers, artists and photographers, it is perhaps not the first place one would think of to visit for a glorious shopping experience. Seek and ye shall find. The island looks tiny on the map but you'll need your entire holiday and more to discover even a small proportion of some of the area's hidden gems. I'd like to share one such shiny jewel with you. Ragamuffin is situated on the pier in Armadale, Sleat (pronounced 'slate') on the south western peninsula of the island. The little shop (strangely like a sheik's tent, it is actually bigger inside than it appears outside) sits overlooking...

Ryde Isle of Wight

Advantages: Ryde Isle of Wight
Disadvantages: Ryde Isle of Wight

...Ryde Isle of Wight Living in Ryde on the Isle of Wight I think gives me a perfect inside knowledge to be able to write this review. I have lived here for a good few years now and have enjoyed pretty much every single year. The Isle of Wight is situated off of the very south of mainland England and a 15-minute ferry crossing from Portsmouth. One of the places you can catch a ferry to is Ryde and it is very easy to be able to hop over from Portsmouth just for the day to the island. Ryde is very popular with holidaymakers, tourists and island residents alike. It has the second biggest shopping town on the Isle of Wight and not only has great shops but has a load of wonderful beaches. From the beaches you are able to have a wonderful skyline view over Portsmouth and Southsea. The Spinnaker Tower is easy visible on a clear...
