BT Broadband Option 3 - Best ISP in UK
Advantages: Great Service, Brilliant Connection, Fantastic Add ons
Disadvantages: Most expensive
...It was about a year ago when I was picking who my new internet service provider is going to be after having one of the worst experiences with Tiscali I could possibly imagine. So after having a look at all the pricing and offers that were on at the time, I was drawn to getting BT Broadband, as not only did it offer its own BT Home Hub Router and great speed, but as I went with BT Broadband Option 3, it came with a bunch of extras I?ll discuss below.
Now I?ve got to say straight off that BT isn?t the cheapest provider in the UK, and honesty I don?t care that I am paying a premium to be with the best Internet Provider in the UK. When subscribing for BT Option 3, you are advertised in getting a reasonable 8mb connections for pretty fast downloads, a BT Home Hub and phone which provides great wireless connections and unlimited downloads...

Be* Lite Broadband ISP (now Be* Value)
Advantages: Excellent customer service and product
Disadvantages: None up to now
...I really have to praise be* broadband.
I ordered my service through the internet the morning of Friday 25th May (07).
Within minutes I received an email to say they had done a line check and there was service available at the exchange.
After a few hours I received another email informing me of the schedule that would take place for the payment, delivery of "free" modem and switch on of the broadband.
I say "free" as the wireless "bebox" is really on loan as long as you take the broadband service from be*. It has to be returned if you cancel the service.
I chose be* for a few reasons-
1. Theyve got decent reviews on other websites.
2. They provide you with a free wireless b/g (54mb) router modem. This has one usb and four 10/100 ethernet sockets for wired connections to your pc/laptop, etc. It has 2 sockets for voip...

MetroNet - PAYG Broadband!!!
Advantages: Unique cost-capped PAYG very cheap good quality & service
Disadvantages: phone support not 24/7; email & webspace paid-for addons
...CAPPED AT £23.75 WHEN YOU REACH 4.74GB. THEN IT BECOMES IN EFFECT AN UPCAPPED SERVICE!!! You can't lose out unless you reach this limit every month, when there are some slightly cheaper options elsewhere.
I've marked ease of installation only as 'satisfactory', although I had no problems, because there is no CD-rom: you have to provide, install and configure your own BB modem or router, and there's still an activation fee (£70 - cheaper if you are migrating). Don't complain: other ISPs who give these free, cover this with higher monthly fees, which they go on charging for ever after they'e recovered these costs from you! I'd already got my modem from my former BT service, and only had to create a new connection to Metronet on changeover day.
Metronet's website is clear and businesslike: designed to service their business, not provide...

Disadvantages: connection drops sometimes
...'Sky Broadband', is the broadband service provided to Sky TV customers by BSkyB.
Sky Broadband
Sky Broadband is an ADSL broadband provider, where the broadband is supplied via a landline. It is not be be confused with dial-up, as you can still use your telephone at the same time, and there will be no interferance, as your connection is split using an ADSL filter.

AOL Broadband
Advantages: Good Speeds
Disadvantages: Bloody call centres
...and talk to "Sanja" Hurray someone honest, it didn't last I am afraid, what a joke this chap reckons its my Sky interfering with AOL?
He said AOL should only be the only thing in the main phone socket, and he says it is definitely sky's fault sending data down my line? I said for 5 hours you're telling me sky is stealing my bandwidth he says YES....so I disconnect my sky and my phone and try it...still the same.
I decide enough is enough and tell him to put me through to someone so I can cancel my AOL broadband. I am put through to the Irish call centre and I am asked what the problem is, I explain again about what has been going on and there pathetic so called Level 2 Technicians. He asked me for my phone number and someone will contact me in the next few hours. About half hour later the phone rings and it's a Irish man called Dennis who...

Broadband Sneaks
Advantages: No longer a reliable broadband service
Disadvantages: Reduce download speed if they can get away with it
...swore once and thanked him for his time).
So.. five minutes later I do the test at www.speedtester.bt.com
And guess what? My speed has suddenly shot up from 136kbs to nearly 1.5Mb. A coincidence? No, I don't think so. It's quite obvious that the PO or BT where purposely reducing my download speed gradually little by little to see what they could get away with. I'd been getting the equivalent of a dial-up speed for near on a week and as soon as I made a complaint they turn on the tap.
So beware, Keep a check on your download speed and make sure your ISP is not ripping you off. My contract is up for renewal next month and I shall be contacting PO customer services again to demand compensation for the reduction of my download speed without my permission.
I no longer recommend PO Broadband as clearly they cannot be trusted, hence my...

Sky Broadband Max Review
Advantages: Fast speeds, easy to set up, unlimited downloads, cheap
Disadvantages: less then average wifi range with supplied router
...Before reading this review, please note I am using the Sky Broadband Max package.
I was previously with PlusNet for two years. They started off good, but the service went downhill once they were taken over by BT. Download speeds were slow, and being such a heavy user, an 11GB bandwidth limit was too small.
A friend of mine, who was also using PlusNet also saw a decline in the quality of service. He had moved to the 8MB package from Sky with the 40GB bandwidth limit. He suggested I move to Sky, so I did.
Looking at the prices, I saw that for only £10 a month I could get Sky's Max package. This include speeds of up to 16MB, and unlimited downloads.
Now you might see offers from many other ISP's with unlimited downloads, but these are not truly unlimited. Most major ISP's have something called a fair use policy, meaning that if they...

BT : 'Now That's What I Call Broadband!'
Advantages: Free wireless router and phone, fast and reliable, excellent technical support, value for money!
Disadvantages: Too many options to speak to someone on the phone.
...I signed up to BT Broadband on the 4th February 2007. Having ordered it through the Internet on the 30th January 2007, I was really impressed with the general service of BT. I signed up to a wireless package, that offered me a free wireless router, worth £50, for £14.99 for the first three months, after the initial three months this then rises to £22.99 a month. If you pay by direct debit, every month, you get a £1 discount every month so in affect your paying £21.99 after your initial three months at £14.99.
I was really impressed with how quick everything was sorted out. Three days after I signed up I received my free wireless BT home hub through the post via Royal Mail Special Delivery. This then gave me three days to wire the router up and remove my old speedtouch modem from my computer. My internet was activated on the 4th...

Metronet - worst ISP ever?
Advantages: non
Disadvantages: 0% customer service, rude and incompetent
...Metronet used to be a breath of fresh air. But since they were taken over by PlusNet the service has vanished.
the 24/7 helpline always has the standard responce that all operators are busy and to call back later. 3 Weeks ago they cut of my main business line by mistake, the will not refund my connect fee, they are still using my credit card to debit the account and there 'ticket' system on the website is being ignored. Whats worse is that they have not disconected the line fully making it impossible to connect to anouther ISP. Even BT wholesale (who handle all connections) cannot remove it without Metronets say so.
After getting a ticket answered (their online system of communication) i was told that they are an inbound call centre and cannot make outgoing calls. They also dont accept incomming calls???!!?!?!?!?
So to sum...

Wanadoo Broadband?
Advantages: Easy to set up, cheap, works great
Disadvantages: 2 GB download limit, Filters may pose you a problem if you use an extension.
...About two weeks ago, I finally decided that it was time to move on to broadband putting an end to my existing dial-up contract with BT and enagaging the services of Wanadoo (formerly Freeserve). A change for the better? Without doubt.
I came across Wanadoo having picked up a free CD at my local Dixons (these CD's are available at almost any electrical store curry's, dixon's etc.) and after doing research on other ISP's, decided this was the one for me. Why? Well it's the cheapest one around for a start (£17.99 a month with free modem and self-installation) and despite the 2GB a month cap on downloads, it sat well above the rest. Compare it with BT Basic for instance which is available for £19.99, has a 1GB download limit and is restricted to one PC only (so you can't network other computers around the house). It's a similar story...
