...ITV1 is going through a serious bad patch at the moment, after the phone line scandal and with programs like Ant and Dec's Takeaway the channel is not having the success that it had in the past and with falling revenue from advertising the company has decided to cut back on its regional programmes to absorb the drops in revenue. Today it has been branded as a nationwide channel rather than the regional identities that had long been established such as Thames Television for London or Central for the Midlands region.
The channel itself started broadcasting under the name of Independent Television on 22nd September 1955, as an alternative to the BBC that only had one channel at the time. Throughout the 1960's and 1970's the channel gave us a whole host of well known acts such as Benny Hill, and Morecambe and Wise. Also it gave us shows...

Review of ITV
Advantages: It shows football... Disadvantages: Everything else is crap
...In a fit of rage normally associated with when someone tries to take money away from me, I sit and stare at the telly. Once more, money has triumphed over quality and we, the viewers, have no say in the matter.
What is this that has brought the rage upon the normally placid and laid back Duke? Well, it’s ITV’s The Premiership. ITV have never been renowned for their football coverage, and when I heard that, once again, Auntie Beeb had lost yet another sport (and not just any sport – they managed to lose the most popular sport in the world!) I resigned myself to some second rate football coverage come the new season.
So, here we are in the new season, and I have five or so weeks of The Premiership under my belt. Each Saturday night, at approximately 20:15 o’clock, I cry into my cup of tea as I’ve wasted...

Review of ITV - The Premiership
Advantages: ITV Any Time, Convenient Disadvantages: Buffering Takes Time
...ITV Player follows in the footsteps of the BBC I-Player ? an online service offering the opportunity to watch the shows you have missed for up to 28 days after they are first aired. For those without a DVD recorder of a VCR this service offers an excellent opportunity to catch up.
This service was a new experience for me and having read several reviews as to the poor quality of the programmes screened I wasn?t expecting an awful lot. However I made my way to ITV.co.uk and followed the link for ITV Player. The website is extremely accessible and very user friendly. The ITV Player link takes you to a sub site specifically adapted to allow the user to find the programme/show they wish to watch and then to watch it.
I was seeking Wuthering Heights, Part 2 having seen Part 1 last Sunday evening. The show wasn?t available online...

Review of ITV Player
Advantages: Free with the license fee Disadvantages: Too many adverts, crappy sidebar credit for all peak-time/networked programmes (idealogy sucks), no longer the ITV it was originally meant to be
...Now called ITV1 to pair it up with its sister digital channel ITV2, it's been around since the dawn of commercial TV in 1955. The original commercial broadcaster, but by no means the best. Originally a blueprint of 16 localised channels set up between 1955 and 1960, its aim was to be local as opposed to the BBC which is national.
Of course by 1968 some of these local stations lost their franchises and were replaced with others. The same thing happened in 1981 (which was when we lost ATV to Central) and again in 1992 (which, incidentally, saw the demise of the excellent TV-AM and the introduction of the naff GMTV). Of course, 1993 also introduced Carlton as a TV broadcaster for the London area. Eight years later, they now broadcast to London on weekdays, and the Midlands and Wales too.
This looks like its going to turn ITV from...

Review of ITV
Advantages: Some very good programmes Disadvantages: Adverts, some dross, Barrymore
...If you had asked me last week, which TV channel I’d have, if I could only have one – I’d have said BBC1 immediately. But since I started researching into the topic of television channels, my mind has changed somewhat.
I have already written an opinion on BBC1 and, if you’ve seen it, you’ll know I am quite a fan of that channel. But after having listed my favourite ten programmes, I discovered that six of them were on ITV!
I have the TV on a lot, it’s on in the background while I’m on the computer. We only have a portable TV upstairs and the aerial is pretty useless, so if I actually want to sit and WATCH a programme (instead of mainly listening to it), I go downstairs and the picture quality there is perfect.
Out of the seven programmes I bother to go downstairs to watch include three...

Review of ITV
Advantages: Free to air Disadvantages: ? any comments
...After 15 years my analogue TV was on its was on its way out, rather than rush into a digital TV at great expense I decided to try a new analogue TV (with scart sockets) and a Phillips free view digital box. Amongst the selection of stations ITV2 a free - to - air TV channel owned by ITV plc. I'm hoping to pay for it with the proceeds from reviews of stations available. Keep you eyes open. Some of the information below is from Wikipedia (a website) more is available there.
THE FACTS
Launched in 7/12/1998 via satellite, cable, terrestrial (freeview). It had an estimated audience of 1.8 % share (multi channel home user) in April 2006. Showings start daily from 9.25 am. Most of the content is made up of ITV1 programmes shown at a later time examples include Coronation street, imported American programs such as Judge Judy and extended...

Review of ITV2
Advantages: The occasional accidental show thats quite good Disadvantages: So average it appeals to only 3 people in the whole world, and one of them went missing in 1990
...Firstly, whats all this ITV 1 nonsense? Its been ITV for a long time, by all means call the new ITV channel ITV2, but we were hardly going to get confused if the old one stayed as ITV. But no, the digital upstarts have now encroached on my terrestrial analogue paradise and I have to put up with the logo saying ITV1 when the realms of ITV2, ITV3 , ITV4 etc etc are beyond my reach.
Anyway, ITV, it's next to the lovely BBC2 (see my review, it's really incisive) and just before the Countdown spawning Channel 4, very simple to find, and it even has regional variation. I get Granada myself, but it only really means you get a different local news and very occasional (and unfathomable) changes in the wee small hours.
Biggest downer - ITV suffers from trying to please all of the people all of the time.
Where BBC1 does not have...

Review of ITV
Advantages: Very few Disadvantages: Too much reality TV, "Celebrity" obsesssion, promotional overkill, too much dumbing down
...I used to be a big ITV fan - there was usually something interesting to watch on most days of the week. Survival, A Touch of Frost, Soldier Soldier, Inspector Morse; all high quality programmes that appealed to a wide age range.
But what are we stuck with now? Crass reality shows like "Celebrity Love Island", "I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!", and most horrific of all, "Celebrity Wrestling". Not to mention some truly diabolical "dramas", such as "Footballer's Wives" (and yes, I know it's supposed to be post-modern tongue-in-cheek, but it's still sensationalist nonsense in my book).
Reality TV has come a long way since "Big Brother". Take "I'm A Celebrity..." for example (please!). It is now not so much an experiment to observe the manner in which people from disparate backgrounds react with each other in a hostile environment...

Review of ITV
Advantages: Twelve and a half hours of quality entertainment Disadvantages: No extras, expensive
...Introduction
I should have known better. My sister's birthday is in February and I thought I was being very organised by buying her a present nearly a month early. As soon as I saw this, I knew she'd love it. Unfortunately, so did I and after a week of resisting temptation, I gave in and watched it myself. And I have to admit it was worth it, even though I now have to get my sister something else?
The discs
Released last year to celebrate 50 years of the ITV channel, the set is made up of 8 discs in all, all key episodes from well-known dramas of the last 15 years or so. These include:
Cracker - One Day a Lemming Will Die
Brief synopsis: A young boy is found hanging from a tree in the middle of a wood. It is not at first clear whether he committed suicide or was murdered. Either way, his death seems to be linked to the fact that...
Advantages: Good shows, especially quizzes Disadvantages: Standard of news etc. is not up to the BBC's
...ITV has some of the best programmes and films available on terrestrial television - of that there is no doubt. Currently the areas that they really lead all other terrestrial channels in include quiz shows, with the amazingly popular Who Wants to be A Millionaire, which attracts huge audiences, and the popular yet reasonably similar The People Versus. It also hosts some of the more popular soaps, although not as good as the BBC's in my opinion, including Emmerdale and Coronation Street. It still really lacks quality when it comes to most news and sport although the acquisition of Des Lynam from the BBC was a masterstroke....
