...frame can be quite a surprise. From reading each of the four editions individually the turn of the page was actually quite staggering as the twist that was discovered was fresh and unexpected. Please note this feeling may be diluted when reading the collective edition. Writers JJ Abrams, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, who wrote the film, have delivered a strong story, it's a shame that this couldn't have been added as a prequel movie, perhaps in the same manner as the Kill Bill films that you have a large scale story split into two parts. Although given the scale of Star Trek as a whole, this would have cost a lot of money. I also tend to think that this was originally part of the script that may have been removed due to constraints. Overall this is a good read, as you get towards the end of the book you do start to feel that...

Cloverfield review

Advantages: Tense, exciting
Disadvantages: None

...Cloverfield is the latest film from hot shot J.J. Abrams, Director of Mission Impossible 3 and creator of Lost. Directed by Matt Reeves, it's the story of a group of friends throwing a leaving party for Rob (Michael Stahl-David), however, as the party continues we hear explosions and feel the ground shake. Going outside we see the head of the Statue of Liberty being thrown down the street like it was a piece of trash. We follow Rob and his friends as they try to rescue Beth (Odette Yustman), the girl he loves, and get out of the city alive. The film is told through a video camera which was supposed to be a video record of people wishing him good luck and giving him farewell messages. Disadvantages: Not for people who get motion sickness from personal video cameras

...I have often passed this DVD in my local supermarkets wondering whether it was worth watching. It has got a cover a bit similar to The Day After Tomorrow scene, unfortunately the security tag on the back of the DVD has always prevented me from reading its brief description which says "From visionary producer J.J. Abrams (Lost) and director Matt Reeves comes the worldwide sensation of nonstop terror and suspense everyone is talking about." Perhaps I have been living in a bubble, but certainly nobody I know has been talking about this film, and there is nothing in the description that really tells me anything about what this film is really about, in the end it was the film scenes on the dustjacket that sold me the idea of buying the film, expecting high quality affects to the quality of The Day After Tomorrow. Roadkill

Advantages: It's a good way to spend a Friday evening
Disadvantages: The plot is very derivative

...John Dahl, who directed RED ROCK WEST and THE LAST SEDUCTION early in his career. Although ROAD KILL is fun it is not quite on a par with these early entries in his oeuvre. One of the writers and producers of the film is J.J. Abrams, who is more famous these days for his work on the TV shows ALIAS and LOST. It is always interesting to visit work from earlier in the careers of famous names and this is no different. I can't say that I noticed any themes from this film recurring in any of his more recent work. Abrams has been tasked with making the new STAR TREK movie, taking us back to the early days of Kirk and Spock, and this should be released in cinemas in approximately 12 months time.
