A Jack Nicholson Masterpiece

Advantages: Superb acting, superb direction
Disadvantages: Not for action lovers

...Once in a while, if you?re lucky, you find yourself settling down with a film, expecting to enjoy it but no more, then finding yourself so absorbed and affected that time disappears and, when the film is over, you just can?t get its atmosphere out of your head. That?s what happened to me with The Pledge, a masterful piece of film-making starring Jack Nicholson and directed by Sean Penn. At first it appears to be a standard police thriller, but after 20 minutes or so you realize that it?s actually much, much more? About Jack. Nicholson that is.

Advantages: Poignant yet compelling.
Disadvantages: Nicholson plays Nicholson.

...We all know that man is a creature of habit. Most of us get set in our ways in routines that changes from little from day-to-day. Schmidt, wonderfully portrayed by Jack Nicholson, is a character that appears to have been stuck in routines for most of his life. He's had a boring job in an insurance firm in the Midwest of the USA for most of his life and has wife who runs a very well regimented house with everything in its place, spick-and-span from top-to-bottom. The film opens with Schmidt having a major upheaval to his hum-drum existence. Retirement! He's 66 and he's waiting for the clock to tick around to end of what will be his last ever day at work. We can only imagine what his existence has been up to this point but all is not well. Trying to cope with retirement we can visibly feel the emotion and tension built up...

Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54

Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.

Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied. On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. Jack and Sarah

Advantages: Good balance of comedy and drama, good performances, quirky.
Disadvantages: Horrid soundtrack, Samantha Mathis.

...The only reason I had a watch of Jack and Sarah was the constant comments I kept reading about how Kevin Smith's Jersey Girl was little more than a remake of it. While there are certainly some similar plot points, on the whole though I would say that the two are entirely different. The best part though was finding a nice little film that I probably would have missed otherwise. Walking the line between drama and comedy is not an easy one for any film. If you're trying to push serious themes, it becomes difficult to crack jokes at the same time. Likewise, a dramatic event in a comedic film can be a very jarring experience that works against the film.
