Another Action packed Chan adventure

Advantages: Plenty of action, more of Chans signature comedic martial arts fight scenes
Disadvantages: Plot is somewhat unoriginal, supporting cast are alright but not brilliant

...This is another film I was lucky enough to spot being shown on TV, this time on a Freeview channel and having read that its another Jackie Chan movie that I hadn't seen already, I knew I had to tape this to watch later, which I did and once again, I wasn't disappointed! This movie dates from 1998 and, similarly to the slightly earlier movie Mr Nice Guy (which I've also reviewed here on Ciao), the character Jackie plays has his same name too. The plot is very similar to The Bourne Identity, with Jackie (the character) a government agent who knows about a secret corrupt deal that could endanger us all and, along with other agents, are left to die on what becomes an unmanned helicopter. However, he manages to escape and survives but suffers from amnesia (hence the name of the movie) and doesn't remember anything about who he is...

Review of Jackie Chan's Who Am I? (DVD)

Mr Nice Guy - Non Stop Chan Action!

Advantages: Good comedy action scenes, good acting from Chan, pretty entertaining
Disadvantages: The story is predictable/formulaic, the acting (apart from Chan) wasn't great, some parts subtitled

...I spotted this movie listed in Radio Times as being shown on channel 4 quite late at night a week or so back. I wouldn't have paid any attention to it, if it weren't for the fact that I spotted the cast and saw that it starred Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung (both of which I like, Jackie Chan is one of my favourite actors and I was a fan of the TV show Martial Law that starred Sammo Hung), which made me think - a-ha! yet another use for my trusty and heavily used new hard disk recorder lol and what a useful piece of equipment that is... anyway, I read the basic plotline from the listing, which basically set the story in a few lines, though I'll explain it now in a bit more detail. Jackie Strikes Again!

Advantages: Entertaining
Disadvantages: not as good as some earlier films

...The new Jackie Chan film, First Strike follows the now familiar territory laid out in the Police Story series, (this is actually the fourth installment) as well as Rumble, in that Jackie plays a Hong Kong policeman on assigment in various locations. This time, he gets to snowboard in Russia and swim with sharks in Australia, all in the name of police work. The plot, as is usual, plays a secondary role to the action sequences. Unfortunately, I was less impressed with the stunts in this film than I have been in the past. They lack the feeling of danger found in earlier, cheaper movies, which means that the action fails to grip the viewer as effectively as in the past. Advantages: Jackie, comedy, action
Disadvantages: Nope

...gang. Jackie Chan is a world superstar and deservedly so, although his success in America has been more recent. Real fans of Chan will know that his best films were made in Hong Kong but comparing the various American releases this is the best of the bunch. Jackie is always great to watch, his action sequences are breathtaking, his stunts are frighteningly dangerous, his physical comedy is expertly executed. These things are always in Jackie's movies though. The difference with this is that the script is very funny and Wilson's character contrasts really well with Jackie, they play off one another. The film sets and costumes are believable, the stunts and explosions look real and exciting, the action is choreographed to perfection by Chan and his team. Best of all the comedy is top notch. Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan deliver again!

Advantages: Extremely Funny
Disadvantages: Lack of story line

...There is not much change, from the other two movies, when it comes to this movie. You still have the same two main leads, Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan, and they both partner up together and do silly things as usual which will make you laugh (successfully). The movie starts you off with showing you what the lives of Lee and Carter are like for them now until they are brought together to solve a case. The two detectives then find themselves going to Paris, where they hit a number of obsticles. The duo have to work together to try and solve the case and find out the truth about the villians, however is someone else hiding a secret that they do not want revelaed? ...While at times I have found Quentin Tarantino's nonlinear storytelling quite frustrating, I do tend to enjoy his movies. ...This is the first piece of work I have read which has been written by Jackie Kay, and i found that the plot and ideas in 'Trumpet' were so original that I would have no idea what to expect if i were to pick up another novel or poem of hers - I'm not sure if this is a good or a bad thing.. Jackie Chan Strikes Again

Advantages: An entertaining action film
Disadvantages: Lacks that vital spark

...I have to say that this opinion will probably be rather biased as I am a huge fan of Jackie Chan. In spite of that fact I have to admit that this film isn't his best. Don't get me wrong, it's a great film and I was glued to the screen throughout, it just doesn't have quite the same impact as the recent Jackie greats such as Rush Hour, Mr Nice Guy and the excellent Rumble in the Bronx. Although the stars of the film all gave great performances Lucy Lui just wasn't quite believable as the demure Eastern Princess Pei Pei. The chemistry between Jackie and Owen Wilson is a pleasure to see, they work incredibly well together and are absolutely believable in their roles. As usual Jackie's lines have been kept to a minimum. He speaks very little, letting the action do the talking for him, and is obviously uncomfortable speaking...

Advantages: Brilliant stunts and fight sequences. Better paced than the first film
Disadvantages: Strange use of music. The direction of comedy moments not up to much.
