It's generally acknowledged that the Master of Suspense disliked costume dramas and Jamaica Inn--a rip-roaring melodrama drawn from a Daphne du Maurier pot-boiler, set in 1820s Cornwall--is about as costumed as they come. So what was he doing directing it? Killing time, essentially. In 1939 Hitchcock was due to leave Britain for Hollywood, but delays Stateside left him with time on his hands. Never one to sit idle, he agreed to make one picture for Mayflower Productions, a new outfit formed by actor Charles Laughton and émigré German producer Erich Pommer. An innocent young orphan (the 19-year-old Maureen O'Hara in her first starring role) arrives at her uncle's remote Cornish inn to find it a den of reprobates given to smuggling, wrecking and gross overacting. They're all out-hammed, though, by Laughton at his most corseted and outrageously self-indulgent as the local squire to whom Maureen runs for help. Since his star was also the co-producer, Hitch couldn't do much with the temperamental actor. He contented himself with adding a few characteristic touches--including a spot of bondage (always a Hitchcock favourite), and the chief villain's final spectacular plunge from a high place--and slyly sending up the melodramatic absurdities of the plot. Jamaica Inn hardly stands high in the Master's canon, but it trundles along divertingly enough. Alla fine del 18° secolo, una ragazza irlandese di nome Mary Yellen, rimasta orfana, lascia l'Irlanda per la Cornovaglia. Lì raggiunge "la taverna della Giamaica", locale malfamato gestito dalla zia Patience e dal marito Joss. Il giudice di pace della contea è Sir Humprhey Pengallan, tipo ambiguo e mellifluo che si invaghisce subito di lei: Mary invece non lo ricambia e prova per lui solo sentimenti di ripugnanza e timore. La ragazza scopre che la taverna è il covo di un gruppo di pirati che, con segnali luminosi, attirano le navi contro gli scogli per saccheggiarle, dopo aver fatto strage dell'equipaggio e dei passeggeri, chiede così aiuto a Pengallan, ma è proprio lui il capo della banda. Mentre Joss è ucciso dai banditi che lo credono un traditore, Pengallan ammazza Patience e costringe Mary a seguirlo su un vascello diretto in Francia.Non riesce però a farla franca perché uno dei pirati è in realtà un infiltrato, Jem (che Mary aveva salvato da un'impiccagione), il quale dà l'allarme e avvisa la polizia. Vistosi perduto, Pengallan si getta dall'albero maestro e muore. Ultimo film del periodo inglese di Hitchcock, Jamaica Inn venne stroncato dai critici ma premiato dal pubblico, sia per i nomi celebri di Hitchcock e Laughton, sia perché gettò le basi di un genere che avrebbe avuto molta fortuna in Inghilterra, il dramma in costume. ... less

Hotel New York, Disneyland Paris
Advantages: clean, luxurious, location, characters
Disadvantages: cleaner stole but would have happened in any resort hotel
...When we came to be looking to book to go to Disneyland Paris we obviously had to spend a bit of time thinking about the accomodation that we wanted to stay in. Most of the people I knew had stayed in the Hotel Cheyenne which was one of the cheaper hotels on the resort but we decided that we wanted to stay closer to the Disney village and parks and so we decided to stay in the Hotel New York...

Bentley Hotel - New York New York!!!!
Advantages: Clean, nice rooms - amazing views from roof top balcony
Disadvantages: 24 Hour coffee bar was actually a vending machine!!
...My lovely husband booked a short stay in New York for my ?surprise? 30th birthday. This was in 2002 and we went there at the beginning of October of that year. Just as a side note before I start the review of the hotel, the weather was fantastic and for much of the time we went out regularly in T-shirts.

Jamaica Inn - Not Hitchcock's Finest Hour
Advantages: Interesting concepts in the film about olden days and smuggling?
Disadvantages: Poor acting from all main characters, poor direction from Hitchchcock
...Jamaica Inn was Alfred Hitchcock?s last film he directed in the UK before leaving us for the US and it seems his mind wasn?t really in it as you might be able to tell from my review below. The film was an adaptation of the Daphne du Maurier novel (which had the same name) and starred Maureen O?Hara, Charles Laughton, Robert Newton, Leslie Banks and Marie Ney.
