A Review of Jan Fennell's The Dog Listener
Advantages: Some useful training information, a few good insights.
Disadvantages: Jan's life, dog training and points on behavior are all muddled together.
...I have read, and enjoyed, Monty Roberts' book "The Man Who Listens to Horses" (he's the official "horse whisperer"). But this isn't the same calibre of book because it doesn't really seem to know what its purpose is...
I ordered this off Amazon.com with an expectation that it might match up to the Monty Roberts book. I have two dogs, one of which is a boisterous puppy and the other a well-behaved dog. I hoped that The Dog Listener would help me to understand them better.
Who Jan Fennell Is
Jan Fennell is a dog expert in the UK. She has been a successful breeder and won prizes at Cruft's. She contributes her knowledge to the BBC's TV and radio shows and visits "delinquent dogs" to try and cure them of their problem.
Format of The Dog Listener...

Fosters Flows Freely Forth For Thirsty Flagellants
Advantages: Inoffensive, wet, good TV ads
Disadvantages: More expensive than water
...There are many beer drinkers out there who don't care one little bit about subtle nuances in style and ingredients, they want a consistent flavour at a respectable price.
FOSTERS LAGER, the most internationally recognised beer from Australia, fits that profile exactly. With the malt flavour lacking in any pronounced sweetness, balanced by some very subtle (to the point of non-existant) hop bitterness, it's not a beer that is taxing to the tastebuds.
I had a little squint at the official Fosters website and gleaned a few bits and pieces of information. I came across some worrying facts to ponder over:
"Foster's Lager is the third most widely distributed beer brand in the world and the fastest growing international lager. It's brewed in over 20 plants on four continents.
Foster's is the largest selling beer in London...

Fosters - It's Like Canoeing
Advantages: The Best Of The Bunch
Disadvantages: If It's Warm It's Muck
...Perplexed by the title? You will have to read my full opinion in order to understand the title.
The Brand
Fosters is Australia's largest brewing company. They had expanded into the UK in the 1990's, but have since divested most of their portfolio of UK beers, preferring to have an interest in the UK breweries, as opposed to owning them outright. Fosters in Australia now own some of Australia's premium wine brands, as research shows that Antipodean drinking habits are changing - they are consuming less beer, and drinking more wine. Fosters also supports major sports events - Formula 1 and The Melbourne Cup (horse racing) to name a few.
The Beer
The most common way to buy Fosters in the UK is in 440ml cans (or tinnies as Aussies call them). The alcohol percentage is 4%, and this beer is a lager, and is therefore a light...

Fosters...Australian For Water
Advantages: see review
Disadvantages: see review
...This is an Australian lager beer which seemed to be brewed in anywhere but Australia. I'm not sure that I could tell the difference if it was brewed In Oz, the Uk or Uzbekistan, but well if you see it over here then the chances are it was brewed here or somewhere close.
What you get for your money is a light golden coloured lager with a small head which quickly dissipates. Upon drinking you are met with a sweet taste with a rough, 'smoky' undercurrent and a slightly bitter aftertaste although this is hardly perceptible. Drank cold this is passable, but definitely not one of the best beers on the market. There is nothing too offensive about it, just nothing to make it stand out from the rest either which is a shame - because its relatively inexpensive as hence rather popular around the student bars of the country.
Basically Fosters...

THE FOSTERING EXPERIENCE
Advantages: BEING ABLE TO GIVE SOMETHING BACK
Disadvantages: NOT BEING ABLE TO SAVE THEM ALL
...HELLO. We have been foster carers for 15 years. It has been an unforgettable experience and one we would not have missed for anything.
We have fostered as many as 6 children at a time, when foster places have been in short supply and the only alternative was the children's home.We currently look after 2 boys and 1 girl. Ages from 9 to 14. Usually we have fostered older teenagers.
I think for me the most rewarding part is seeing how the kids work so hard with a bit of help from us. We see them develop like emerging butterflies and they can really turn their lives around. They make us so proud. Some of their behaviour is challenging; they have all been hurt and it shows. But they all come back to visit after they move on and we have much laughter as they say 'Remember when I did that?'
Nationally there is a terrible shortage...

ALAN DEAN FOSTER, SOMEONE YOU DIDNT KNOW YOU KNEW
Advantages: GREAT AUTHOR
Disadvantages: SO MUCH TO READ !
...The following information has been garnered from blurbs and includes my own very personal views on some of Alans books, read on Mcduff?.,
Alan dean foster was born in New York city in 1946 and was raised in Los Angeles. After receiving a bachelor's degree in political science and a master of fine arts in cinema from ucla (1968, l969) he spent two years as a copywriter for a small studio city, California.
His writing career began when August Derleth bought a long Lovecraftian letter of Alans in 1968 and much to Alans surprise, published it as a short story in Derleth's bi-annual magazine "the Arkham Collector". Sales of short fiction to other magazines followed.
His first attempt at a novel, the Tar-Aiym Krang, (has spawned a popular series of Pip and Flinx adventure sequels, at the time of writing this, 13 Pip and Flinx novels...

BILDERBERG HOTEL JAN LUYKEN, AMSTERDAM - A1 !!!
Advantages: Location
Disadvantages: None that I could see
...Hi, I work in the Travel Industry, so thought that it would be nice to pass on my knowledge on certain places. I really do hope you find this review helpful. Please do leave a rating at the end of the review.
Ok, lets start.
**********LOCATION**********
The Bilderberg Hotel Jan Luyken is very good for those who like a more cultural aspect. It is located near the museums and is in the South neighborhood in Amsterdam. This area is the heart of cultural Amsterdam, all the important museums are basically a stone's throw away. Opposite the hotel you will find the Rijks museum and the Van Gogh Museum and virtually on the doorstep are the famous P.C. Hooftstraat, the Vondelpark and the Leidseplein with its cosy cafés, trendy bars, theatres and cinemas. As if thats not enough only a few minutes' walk away are the Concertgebouw and the Van...

Fosters you make me happy
Advantages: Cold and easy to drink...
Disadvantages: Not much to it.
...Picture the scene: you're stranded in the countryside on a hot summer's day, and push your way into a small country saloon, gasping for a beer. There is no noise inside, and no forms of life, other than a few ancient locals supping pints of Best in the panelled crevices of the bar.
On tap, places like this usually have ales with names like 'Rottinghead Wode' and 'Batsman's Middle Wicket' - you know if you order a pint of this, it'll be thicker than McDonald's milkshake, warm, and have lumps of yeast floating in it.
But what's this? A gold emblem with a bold red F in the centre? Foster's is so widespread that it even makes it's way out to the dingiest backwater pubs - packed in ice and sawdust, having made the long journey across the fens and fells of the countryside.
Cold, fizzy, refreshing, with that re-assuring tang...

It's not foster's! it's mine!!!
Advantages: creamy. very drinkable.
Disadvantages: can't find it in any pubs..
...foster's amber..
yum.
when i first saw the cans on sale, i thought they looked a bit cheesy, all blue with gold colours and white writing. ah, but the taste, that's what really matters.
i've got a can of foster's right next to me here. i would like to have some, but sadly, it's empty ;-)
foster's amber, is lager from the land down under australia. i must say, one of the best thing's to have come out from australia besides their rugby team and elle macpherson.
i bought 4 cans at tesco, i've lost my receipt, but if i remember correctly, it was about 3.50. they are havin offer right now, in liverpool at tesco express, where if u buy 8 cans u get them for 6 quid something.
each can contains 500ml of the wonderful stuff, and it contains 4.0% vol of alcohol. it is calculated to be 2.0 UK alcohol units.
also, along...

How many foster carers really care??
Advantages: At least I wasn't put in a "home"
Disadvantages: There are some foster parents that have no right to be
...At 5 years old I was sent to a foster family for a fortnight while my Mum went into hospital. They had a daughter a few months older than me and one aged 2.
I found those 2 weeks hard, although I wasn't an only child I was brought up as one almost my brothers being 16 and 18 years older than me and to have to share everything even my bath wasn't nice. The thing that sticks most in my mind was my foster father making me drink tea at breakfast time, I never drank tea, and he even made me drink the dregs in the bottom of the cup with tea leaves in it. This may not seem important but it sticks with me after 26 years.
At 11 my Mum was taken into hospital again and I stayed with my Grandparents for a few weeks, I came home from school one night, my second day at high school to find my bags packed and was told I was going into foster care...
