A well paced Java book

Advantages: Quick and to the point
Disadvantages: Probably not a huge amount of depth

...If you're after a Java programming book and need to learn the basics fast, I don't think you can go far wrong with a book I borrowed from a friend. The book is called 'Essential Java 2 Fast' and is by John Cowell. It covers all you need to know to to be able to write basic Java 2 applications and applets. Unlike mest other Java books I've looked at, this one isn't 'Noddy goes to toyland' in its approach. ;-) It's well paced, and tells you what you need to know, and as the title says - fast. It can be worked through in a matter of days, as the examples are not too heafty. Advantages: General purpose programming langage, Object-oriented, Multi-threaded and portable
Disadvantages: not suitable for all tasks, and java applications are little bit slow

Reasonably easy to decompile a class file back to Java, but fortunately you can usually obfuscate class files. Java can be obtained for free. All you have to do is to go the official web site of SUN: java.sun.com and follow the instructions. The latest version is JDK 1.3.2. ...that is the beauty of it. The service leases time off the lookup service so that if the service becomes redundant it won't renew its lease and therefore won't get listed. A bit like getting your phone disconnected and being taken out of the phone book, only much more immediate (like seconds). So what's the problem, why haven't I seen it on the television, heard some clapped out comedian joke about it like he knows what he's talking about? Like all good ideas (personal hygiene, peace etc.) it will take time to catch on. Plus it always helps to a. have lower prices for things, b.have the providing technology improve, c.let smaller devices take on a JVM (Java Virtual Machine). Helpful Java textbook

Advantages: Clear, with advanced features covered

...When learning a new programming language (as all programmers must do to keep up with modern developments), it is vital to have a good book to teach you the basics, and guide you through the more complex aspects of the language. Indeed, it is also important to have a good reference to refer back to later. Core Java is one such book. It comes in 2 volumes, the first covering the basics and the second the more complex aspects. It breaks you in gently, but refrains from taking the approach of other books and loading you down with more theory than you need, and not actually giving you any code to work on until the 215th page. You feel as though you?re actually getting somewhere with Core Java, and this is encouraging. Disadvantages: None really, except maybe best enjoyed by those with some prior knowledge of Wilde
