Toilet Humour

Advantages: Great fun, hits the spot.
Disadvantages: None

...queuing up to go to the toilet in the zoo (I think, but it not really clear), both asking, 'Who's in the Loo.' There then follows some of their ideas as to who might be taking so long in the loo. For example: "Is it a stoat who's making a stink? Or a pig who's washing his pants in the sink?" There, it is a simple plot, and not too taxing. The book was written by Jeanne Willis and Adrian Reynolds did the artwork. Willis has other books to her credit, such as 'The Really Rude Rhino,' and 'Grill Pan Eddie.' I think I will be looking out for more of her books! ISBN 9781842706985 www.andersonpress.co.uk Note - Special Criteria below is for an audio book for some reason! Will tell CIao!...

A chicken and a baby chick explain the concept of love!

Advantages: A good all round book
Disadvantages: Pages are made of paper rather than board

...On our weekly visit to the library I was searching through the books for Noah and came across this one. I had a quick flick through and decided it might be a nice to bring home and read. The book is written by Jeanne Willis and illustrated by Jan Fearnley. It's quite a new one and was only printed last year (2008) by Walker Books LTD. The story tells of a chicken and it's baby chick. The baby chick gets himself into all sorts of predicaments on purpose, only to ask his mother if she still loves him and why. Each time the mother explains that she does until it gets to a point in the book where the mother has to shout at the chick. The chick gets extremely upset so the mother has to explain why she shouted but that she still loves him. The roles are then reversed at the end when little chick tells his mummy that he loves her...

How Rude Can You Be?

Advantages: A starting point to discuss manners and politeness with older children. Humorous element for children.
Disadvantages: Young children could find the rhino so funny that they begin to copy his rudeness.

...Having a couple of 'rude' children in my Year 2 class, I searched high and low for a short story that would deal with rudeness and the importance of being polite and well-mannered. I came across this book and the title suggested the appropriateness of this for a short PSHE circle time session but I was not totally overwhelmed by it...........more on this later! - The author, Jeanne Willis - Jeanne Willis is a prolific writer of children's picture books and books for older, independent readers. She has also written for television and video companies. Other books by this author include: * Dozy Mare * Cowgirl * Stephanie Smiled * Brought up by Teddybears * Laughs - The illustrator, Tony Ross - Tony Ross went to Liverpool's School of Art and is a prolific writer and illustrator of children's picture books. He has...

Is There An Alien Among Us

Advantages: Fun way to look at what babies are like
Disadvantages: May not appeal to all under 5's

...***Background*** Dr Xargle's Book Of Earthlets, is said to be translated in human speech by Jeanne Willis and has pictures drawn by Tony Ross. It was first published in 1988 so this is another book that has been around for quite some time. This version was published in 2002 by Andersen Press Ltd who also publish the Little Princess series of books, written and illustrated by Tony Ross. Jeanne Willis has written a whole series of Dr Xargle books that tell the story of how a group of aliens learn about earthlets or children and their behaviour. As well as this series she has also written many other books as well as TV scripts for Polly Pocket. ***The Story*** In this first of the series the aliens start by learning about babies and how they come in four colours - pink, brown, black and yellow. Dr Xargle also explains that...

I want more for my boy

Advantages: Will appeal to the mischieviousness of kids
Disadvantages: will encourage bad habits

...Author: Jeanne Willis Illustrator: Tony Ross Publisher: Anderson Press Publish Date: February 2006 Genre: Children's Picture Book Pages: 32 Age Suitability: 3-5 RRP: £5.99 (I got it as a 3 for 2 deal from ELC) At my two year old son's insistence, I took him into town this weekend to buy him a new book. We went into the Early Learning Centre First where there was a 3 for 2 deal on. My son picked up The Really Rude Rhino to which I added two other titles which appealed to the sensible mum in me a little bit more. Having scanned through the book on the drive home, I grew increasingly happy I had bought the other two books as well. ***Who is Jeanne Willis?*** I have to admit to having not heard of Jeanne Willis before but having done my research, I realise she is front runner in the world of Children's stories from picture...

Aliens & Your Earth Hounds

Advantages: Looking at life through an alien's eyes
Disadvantages: none

...***Background*** This is one in a whole series of books about how Dr Xargle looks at things on Earth from his home on a bizarre planet where he lectures to his students. Jeanne Willis is the author of this strange but very funny series and her words are helped along by the illustrations of Tony Ross, who is of course so well known for his lovable character, The Little Princess. ***The Story*** When we open the book we see Dr Xargle, who is a green alien with many eyes long straggly arms. He informs his class that today they are going to learn about Earth Hounds. We are told that they have fangs at one end and a waggler at the other but sometimes it can be difficult to tell which end is which when the Earth Hound is hairy, so a sausage can be held at either end to find this out. He goes on to explain that they have...

Willie Nelson: Story-Teller

Advantages: Willie's sweet voice and stinging guitar
Disadvantages: It's not twice as long

...The music: clean, uncluttered introspective. The songs: conveying the stark, sere, loneness of the singer. It's been called "blue collar blues" and I'd call it that, too, more than I'd call it country music. Only three of the songs are new, written in the 1990s, the rest are refashioned from the 1960s, and the 30 years in between scarcely matter. The songs were chosen and pieced together to tell the story of obssessive love or convey the concept of domestic abuse, whichever way you want to see it. And they do succeed in working together. They succeed in taking hold of your heart and grabbing onto it hard. Somehow, in Willie Nelson's mature voice, the older songs take on a new edge and freshness. Emmy Lou Harris's background voice deepens the poignancy and works sweetly with Willie's. Hers is the ghostly voice of the victim and...
