Jeep thrills - now at a newsagent near you!
Review of Jeep World by
tony_the_tiger
Advantages: Articles to suit all Jeep enthusiasts. Good value at £3.10
Disadvantages: None so far!
...There are a number of names and words which are often used generically despite being covered by trademark laws, but because they relate to icons they are names with which we are able to associate a type of product immediately. Think of a vacuum cleaner and we tend to call it a Hoover, excavators are often referred to as JCBs and offroad vehicles are usually thought of as 'Jeep'.
The Jeep name is actually registered by parent company the DaimlerChrysler Corporation, and originates from the original term given to the little vehicles seen scurrying around in just about every WWII movie you see - they were designated General Purpose by the US Army which was shortened to GP, and hence Jeep!
The Jeep brand has been owned by 4 companies over the years (Willys, Kaiser, AMC and now Daimler Chrysler), but there are still links between...

Jeep 2.5 sport, not very sporty at all
Review of Jeep Cherokee 2.5 TD by
tubbynuts
Advantages: Spacious, performs functions.
Disadvantages: Not sporty, uncomfortable on long drives, no fun to drive
...The need for a 4*4 jeep type car/jeep was required for the movement of my 12 stone dog and for work, and was to become a second car. I picked the Jeep Cherokee as I liked the styling. After looking at all the models available I decided that the 2.5 litre petrol model would prove the most cost efficient, even over the diesel 4.0 litre model.
After searching for the desired 2.5 litre model, which was lead to believe are fairly hard to come by I found one reasonable priced at £12500 for a clean, tidy, 1998 car.
At first I was pleased with the Jeep as it served its purpose without any question. with the rear seats down I was able to transport many items of furniture in the rear, eg chest of draws with ease. Also the roof rack came in very handy. With the rear seats up and the dog guard in place the boot gives ample room for a 12 stone...

Jeep Cherokee Limited
Review of Jeep Cherokee 4.0 by
Chewa
Advantages: Small enough to fit in garage, high viewpoint, equipment levels great, never been better value, great looks, great to drive
Disadvantages: fuel consumption heavy, suspension a bit primitive
...The classic shape Jeep Cherokee is due to be phased out in the next two years, to be replaced by the all new Jeep Liberty (though it's hard to imagine Jeep letting the Cherokee name go).
Take the chance and go for one of the classic shape Cherokees which are now incredibly good value. For about 20K you get a capable off roader that looks like a big Tonka toy, fits in a normal height garage (unlike some 4 w d cars)and is great fun to drive.
Never mind the cost of petrol, go for the 4 litre straight six if possible with leather and the electric and lighting packs. This will give you auto box, air con, heated electrically operated seats, sentinel headlamps (show you the way to your door) and various other thoughtful pieces of equipment.
It's as quick off the mark as many GTI's and doesn't roll as much as other 4x4's, and although...

A great 4 wheel drive
Review of Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.1 TD by
IBeattie
Advantages: Comfortable, quiet, smart
Disadvantages: None
...Chrysler Grand Cherokee 3.1 TD
We are now the owners of our second "Jeep" which we bought from our local dealers, who by the way give an excellent service, We have had several different 4 wheel drive cars, mainly Mitsubishi, which although we liked thought they priced thenmselves out of the market. The quality of the finish of the jeep we feel is second to none and the comfort is superb. On or off road is it extremely stable. Recently we were caught in a blizzard and apart from looking out of the window you would never have known it It didn't budge one bit, all around cars were lying off the road. We have never felt so safe in any vehicle before. By the way the leather seats are standard, the only extra we chose were the side steps because we liked the look they gave. Deisal consumption is not that bad either for such a robust car...

A change from Brit to American 4x4...
Review of Jeep Wrangler 4.0 by
el-em
Advantages: Fun, not many on the UK road, higher than most vehicles, a PROPER off-roader
Disadvantages: Heavy on the petrol, tendency to slide on wet road, no ABS brakes
...So which is the better...? Well, depends on what you are comparing. I owned and drove 3 Landrover Freelanders from 1998 to 2002. Now I have a Jeep Wrangler Sahara hard top.
I bought my Jeep second-hand in 2002, with 13,000 miles on the clock. It's a 2000 model, but the Wrangler has not changed much from 1997-2003 - other than minor cosmetics.
Mine is a black hard top Sahara edition (top of the range as at 2002). The Sahara hard top comes standard with Aircon, dual airbags, leather covered steering wheel, a radio/tape (CD changer compatible).
Upholstery is beige (Jeep call it camel) and green.
Useful features of the Wrangler:
- The hard top comes off (optional soft top - a pricey option that costs more than £1000). Note: Two people needed, and a star torque spanner.
- ALL the carpets come out. VERY useful to wash them...

Jeep Cherokee 4.0 Orvis
Review of Jeep Cherokee 4.0 by
Buenosdias
Advantages: Looks the business. People get out of your way ! Engine is very athletic ;-)
Disadvantages: Put your foot down and you see the petrol gauge drop !!!
...I recently bought a bargain Cherokee Orvis from e-bay at a very realistic price, bearing in mind the number plate is worth £1,000 !!!
The Cherokee I bought was a 4.0 litre Orvis model imported from America 1n 1994, so yes, it is left hand drive and is auto (which I love). The previous owner wanted something even bigger (!) as he and his friends are regular surfers, they needed the board space.
It appears to be a real head turner and people do give way to you ALWAYS when driving it, the Orvis has the gold wheels to which people seem to like. It handles well, is very comfortable and is very easy and nice to drive with a lively engine. I do get a lot of looks if I am in the Jeep on my own as it is left hand drive, but I do not have any problems with overtaking and parking etc, the Jeep in high enough to see over most things and spends...

Jeep Cherokee 4.0L Mk1
Review of Jeep Cherokee 4.0 by
StevePritchard43
Advantages: 4 wheel drive and plenty of torque
Disadvantages: Fuel cosumption and lack of availability of spares
...I moved to the country from town and the Merc was just not suitable for the muddy lanes, pot holes and cow poo! So I got the Jeep. I hate the underpower of diesel and thought the 2.5L petrol in a 4x4 may not be powerful enough to pull my caravan, so it had to be the 4.0L. I was expecting the fuel consumption of 14mpg, so I got a LPG converted one, which halves the cost, equivalent of over 30mpg. The only problem with this, is the frequency in which it needs filling. At 14mpg and 60 litre tank, it doesn't go far. So I have to plan journeys around LPG filling stations, which are few and far between where I live.
The Jeep itself, is fairly comfortable, pulls like a train (loads of torque) handles reasonably well for a 4x4. Not bad equipment level for an American car. The bigest problem is the availability of spares for this thing...

A game viewer's paradise
Review of Ngorongoro Conservation Area (Tanzania) by
LeilaR
Advantages: Plenty of game in a small area.
Disadvantages: Some animals are now very used to tourists.
...The remnants of a volcano and 19km wide, this national reserve is home to a huge variety of fantastic animals. Only accessible by jeep, which you can organise in Arusha or Karatu, it is a totally unspoilt animal’s paradise.
From the crater rim you can see the whole way across, with the plains and the lakes, I have never seen such a vast sight. Once inside, there is no end to the game you will be able to see.
We saw all the usual kind of game that we had seen in many game parks before, but the absolute highlight was the lions. We found then just sleeping in the sun on the cracked mud plains. When we arrived there, there were already a couple of other jeeps there already. We stopped about 10m from them. The whole jeep held its breath, and we just watched awe struck. They were barely moving, and we just couldn’t keep our eyes off...

Summer fun
Review of Jeep Wrangler 4.0 by
CHAD169623
Advantages: Cool summer fun
Disadvantages: Soft top roof
...I traded in my 2000 MR2 roadster for my 4.0 Jeep Wrangler Sahara, in the past I’d always gone for small cars, but I’ve wanted a Jeep for so long I decided that I just had to get one. And I love every minute of it.
There are only 2 different specs for Wranglers, there is the Sport version, and the Sahara, and for a while there is a sepcial 'Grizzly' version. The sport version (£15,575) is the entry level spec and comes with steel wheels, black dash, and a black soft top, they now only come in black, green, and blue. Next up is Grizzly (£16,295) it comes only in Silver, and is the same as the sport apart from it also has alloy wheels. The Sahara (£18,350 manual, £18,995 automatic) only comes in green and black, and as the top of the range it gets, a leather bound steering wheel, air-con, colour coded wheel arches, alloy wheels, and hard...

dont do it!!
Review of Suzuki Jimny 1.3 convertible by
westiekate
Advantages: looks nifty and cheap
Disadvantages: a danger on the road
...i bought my jimny about two years ago and kept it for eighteen months
it main attraction for me were the sporty looks the soft top and the price approx. £9000.
Fuel economy is quite good as it drives in 2 wheel drive for the most part only needing to be put into 4 wheel in poor adverse conditions (i hoped for thick snow but it never came so mine remained in 2 wheel drive all the time)
it requires servicing every 9 thousand miles which is poor so in the time i had the jeep it had two services at a suzuki garage to adhere to manufacturers warranty...a pricey business at apprx £250 pounds for a basic service (and they didnt even wash it for that)(suzuki garage at ackworth to name and shame)
The soft top was so complicated to remove that i only ever managed the sunroof area i really dont think the rest would have come off and on efficiently...
