My fab Jeep
Advantages: Spacious, comfortable, good looks, well built
Disadvantages: Maybe petrol consumption, if you do a lot of miles per year
...I felt I had to revise this review, having now owned the car for two years, so the original text below includes some additions that I thought may be useful:-
I had to write a review based on my Jeep Cherokee. I'd previously owned a Vauxhall Frontera, but we saw this advertised in the Summer of 2004, and it caught my eye immediately. We were actually looking for a Grand Cherokee, but once we saw this model we fell in love with it!
~ THE CAR ~
The car itself is an automatic petrol 3.7 litre V6, which, according to the onboard computer, does 13/14 miles to the gallon (Eeeek!). Although, having driven on longer journeys (than just to Tescos and back!) I get more like 20mpg, up to even 24 mpg on the motorway. A diesel version is available, which is no doubt probably better in an economical sense, and also manual versions to choose...

Jeep Cherokee 4.0 Orvis
Advantages: Looks the business. People get out of your way ! Engine is very athletic ;-)
Disadvantages: Put your foot down and you see the petrol gauge drop !!!
...the key and it fired ! 1st time after a week of being idle ! How's that for being reliable !!! I have had some cars in years gone by that have died in less than a week ! Needless to say the 4 litre engine was rearing to go ! So I gave my lil Tonka Jeep a good run today - the battery level meter was on half, which is fine - perfectly normal. I thoroughly enjoyed giving me Jeep a good run, and was really pleased to be back in a left-hand-drive car, not that all Jeeps are LHD, but mine is (it was imported in 1994) and I love it - everything is on the correct side for me ! and I find LHD cars easier to drive - but maybe that is just me ;-) Happy motoring Ciaosters ;-)...

Jeep thrills - now at a newsagent near you!
Advantages: Articles to suit all Jeep enthusiasts. Good value at £3.10
Disadvantages: None so far!
...There are a number of names and words which are often used generically despite being covered by trademark laws, but because they relate to icons they are names with which we are able to associate a type of product immediately. Think of a vacuum cleaner and we tend to call it a Hoover, excavators are often referred to as JCBs and offroad vehicles are usually thought of as 'Jeep'.
The Jeep name is actually registered by parent company the DaimlerChrysler Corporation, and originates from the original term given to the little vehicles seen scurrying around in just about every WWII movie you see - they were designated General Purpose by the US Army which was shortened to GP, and hence Jeep!
The Jeep brand has been owned by 4 companies over the years (Willys, Kaiser, AMC and now Daimler Chrysler), but there are still links between...

The Jeep Patriot...a good job Uncle Sam !
Advantages: Good fuel economy, the SUV to drive if you feel guilty for driving an SUV !
Disadvantages: ...Needs Satnav as standard for those long journeys
...Unlike its siblings...the patriot retains its classic jeep "boxy" styling that undeniably harkens back to the Cherokee. Its a true off-road compact utility vehicle with low gear transmission..kinda like the "Swiss Armyknife" of SUV's...versatile, functional, capable and able to go anywhere.
Handling is aided by standard electronic traction and stability control with roll sensors that adds confidence to the Patriot's smooth, but soft response. The front end pushes slowly into turns without much feedback. But the rack & pinion steering is signature "Jeep Quick" and light. On open roads the patriot is a snap to manoeuvre around car parks and city streets..it's no hatch, but there's something bordering on fun here !
The 2-litre diesel engine - taken from Volkswagen - pushes out 138bhp and 229lb/ft of pulling power, meaning acceleration...

Jeep Cherokee 4.0 HO STD Limited Automatic
Advantages: Powerful, tough as old boots, FUN!
Disadvantages: Load space, fuel consumption
...After a prolonged period of dithering I finally managed to convince myself that I really did "need" a 4WD vehicle for my leisure activities. All my previous cars have been 2WD and although I never managed to get any of them actually bogged when off the tarmac, it was a close run thing at times, even when shod with mud and snow tyres!
After a few test drives I eliminated the smaller contenders, like RAV4s and Suzukis and was left with a choice of Land/Range Rover, Mitsubishi Shogun, Toyota Land Cruiser, Jeep Cherokee, Isuzu Trooper, Vauxhall Monterey or Vauxhall Frontera.
The Frontera dropped out of the reckoning after I read a number of reviews which hinted strongly at various reliability issues, so I began shopping around for good examples of the rest. In truth I'd have happily settled for a good example of any of them, and in...

2004 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon
Advantages: Convertable that goes anywhere and everywhere.
Disadvantages: Storage and Cargo space are minimal.
...I purchase my Wrangler Rubicon in December of 2003. A year later I'm still as excited about it as I was the day I drove it off the lot. Here in Colorado, USA, there are plenty of 4x4 trails to challenge this "extreme rock crawler." My Wrangler has done nearly half of the 200+ passes in Colorado already, with no problems. And my Wrangler has all original stock parts with no modification. The Rubicon model comes with larger tires, a heavy duty transfer case, skid plates, and air lockers, front and rear, from the factory.
The on road handling is the most amazing thing about this vehicle. Jeeps are famous for their off road capability, and also for riding rough and being top heavy in the curves, but my Wrangler is surprisingly stable and smooth. The 7 speaker stereo system with a sub woofer and CD drowns out any road noise from...

Jeep 2.5 sport, not very sporty at all
Advantages: Spacious, performs functions.
Disadvantages: Not sporty, uncomfortable on long drives, no fun to drive
...The need for a 4*4 jeep type car/jeep was required for the movement of my 12 stone dog and for work, and was to become a second car. I picked the Jeep Cherokee as I liked the styling. After looking at all the models available I decided that the 2.5 litre petrol model would prove the most cost efficient, even over the diesel 4.0 litre model.
After searching for the desired 2.5 litre model, which was lead to believe are fairly hard to come by I found one reasonable priced at £12500 for a clean, tidy, 1998 car.
At first I was pleased with the Jeep as it served its purpose without any question. with the rear seats down I was able to transport many items of furniture in the rear, eg chest of draws with ease. Also the roof rack came in very handy. With the rear seats up and the dog guard in place the boot gives ample room for a 12...

Jeep Cherokee Limited
Advantages: Small enough to fit in garage, high viewpoint, equipment levels great, never been better value, great looks, great to drive
Disadvantages: fuel consumption heavy, suspension a bit primitive
...The classic shape Jeep Cherokee is due to be phased out in the next two years, to be replaced by the all new Jeep Liberty (though it's hard to imagine Jeep letting the Cherokee name go).
Take the chance and go for one of the classic shape Cherokees which are now incredibly good value. For about 20K you get a capable off roader that looks like a big Tonka toy, fits in a normal height garage (unlike some 4 w d cars)and is great fun to drive.
Never mind the cost of petrol, go for the 4 litre straight six if possible with leather and the electric and lighting packs. This will give you auto box, air con, heated electrically operated seats, sentinel headlamps (show you the way to your door) and various other thoughtful pieces of equipment.
It's as quick off the mark as many GTI's and doesn't roll as much as other 4x4's, and although...

Jeep Cherokee 2.8 CRD Ltd (Auto)
Advantages: Has many refinements as standard
Disadvantages: Paintwork is very soft. Diesel is noisy in town driving
...I bought a Jeep 2.8 CRD Ltd after reading a number of reviews in Jan 2007, and now I wish I never had.
Prior to this I had Shoguns and other equivalent 4x4's but fancied a change and went for the Cherokee.
The drive is fine, comfortable and does have many refinements. However I have had a number of teething problems which it has been in and out for to the dealer. Aircon never worked went in for twice - Key continually stuck in the ignition lock and wouldn't come out no matter where you put the automatic box. Often couldn't get it out of park mode even with much pressure on the brakes. Brakes often felt soft and peddle went down on to the floor when stood still - techniciaian came and advised there was a problem - went into the garage where they advised it was normal!!
I bought a black one and would never be so silly again. I...

Jeep Cherokee 4.0L Mk1
Advantages: 4 wheel drive and plenty of torque
Disadvantages: Fuel cosumption and lack of availability of spares
...I moved to the country from town and the Merc was just not suitable for the muddy lanes, pot holes and cow poo! So I got the Jeep. I hate the underpower of diesel and thought the 2.5L petrol in a 4x4 may not be powerful enough to pull my caravan, so it had to be the 4.0L. I was expecting the fuel consumption of 14mpg, so I got a LPG converted one, which halves the cost, equivalent of over 30mpg. The only problem with this, is the frequency in which it needs filling. At 14mpg and 60 litre tank, it doesn't go far. So I have to plan journeys around LPG filling stations, which are few and far between where I live.
The Jeep itself, is fairly comfortable, pulls like a train (loads of torque) handles reasonably well for a 4x4. Not bad equipment level for an American car. The bigest problem is the availability of spares for this thing...
