...This is a horror film that has seen a lot of poor reviews from the critics, as well as most of the public; however, I really enjoyed it! The plot is as follows: a beautiful cheerleader, Jennifer, and her nerdy friend, Needy, go through life in small town America with a lot of differences but a strong friendship. When Jennifer is sacrificed by a band of satanists desperate for success, she comes back as a demon and uses her sexuality to lure men into a trap of death! This is a horror, but it's also a tongue in cheek comedy. As a horror it does work, and there are four or five realky scary scenes. However, the real strength of the film is the comedy. ...test screenings? 13 Going On 30 is perhaps best suited to the less judgmental minds of teenagers who, I presume, will better relate to the subject matter and no doubt find it enjoyable, not hackneyed. Young minds are more forgiving, which accounts for why I still have a soft spot for Big. But just has Tom Hanks moved onto far better things, I?m hopeful that Jennifer Garner will do the same. 2.5 stars...

Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54

Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.

...At first I wasn't convinced by up-scaling DVD player technology but was persuaded after reading an article in "What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision" magazine. Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied. On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. ...I am a HUGE fan of James Patterson especially his Alex Cross novels so when I seen he was taking a softer more light hearted approach in his writing I wasn't 100% sure I would want to read it, the only advice I can give you on this is don't be fooled or put off go out and get a copy immediately. ...the dramatic sequences are jarred by bouts of physical humour, they make uneasy bedfellows and cancel each other out, making the film nothing more than middle of the road. The saddest thing is that if Susannah Grant had stuck to one tack she would have made a really good movie; we know this because she writes terrific emotional dialogue which shows insight and crafts bursts of hilarity that are genuinely funny.
