"We've never had it so good!"
Advantages: Interesting, informative
Disadvantages: Some dull bits
...I am interested in social history and, as a mother, the job of midwives fascinates me. Combining these two subjects, ''Farewell to the East End'' is a riveting read. The author Jennifer Worth was a midwife and nurse, working with the nuns at Nonnatus House in the East End of London and this volume (her third book on this topic) covers the 1950s.
This was a time before the contraceptive pill, when the Sisters delivered around a hundred babies a month. It was a period of readjustment after World War II, when houses were still destroyed from the bombs and many families were living in poverty and squalid conditions. The nuns were there to help the poor, seeing the women through their labours and delivering the babies, but there was plenty more to them too.
Jennifer Worth describes the nuns and her fellow midwives with warmth...

Young boys prefer hell ... Jennifer's Body
Advantages: Good strong leads
Disadvantages: Tried to hard to be cool
...~~~Jennifer's Body~~~
Jennifer is your typical all-American gorgeous cheerleader, popular with the boys and someone the other girls love to hate. However on the other hand, best friend Needy is quite the opposite, innocent, bookish and a bit of a geek.
Friends since they were little girls, its obvious to all that know them that the fact they don't have that much in common doesn't get in there way of their friendship.
But the friendship is really put to the test when Jennifer is possessed by a demon after an indie rock band mistake her for a virgin and sacrifice her to Satan in return for their continued success and fortune.
With a new found perspective on boys, Jennifer uses her charm, sexiness and pure evil to lure her male classmates one by one to their brutal death.
Will friend Needy sacrifice her 'Best Friend Forever...

Meet the Eastenders as you never have before !!
Advantages: A moving factual account of 1950's London - a must read book
Disadvantages: That this is the last of the series!!
... FAREWELL TO THE EAST END
Jennifer Worth
This is the third autobiographical books by Jennifer Worth that tells of her memoirs from the time she spent working as a midwife with the nuns at Nonnatus House in the East End of London in the 1950s.
The previous two books in the trinity were "Call The Midwife" and "Shadows of the Workhouse".
You could read this as a stand-alone book, but it is far better to read it with the other two in chronological order. That way you can follow the characters (and their often tragic lives) to the end.
This really is a truly rivoting must read book - it will make you both laugh and cry, and for a young mother will make you realise just how lucky you are.
The medical services in the England of the 1950's was a completely different state to what we have now...

Heat up The Water, The Baby's Coming!
Advantages: An absorbing read
Disadvantages: none that I can think of!
...Review of 'Call the Midwife' by Jennifer Worth.
**The book**
This book is true story of the life and work of a young midwife, Jennifer Worth. Jennifer worked in the East End of London in the 1950s, her patients were among the poorest, toughest members of the Dockland community.
The second World War had left London ravaged and in parts derelict. Children had bombsites for their playgrounds and many homes that had been declared unfit for human occupation prior to the war, were still in use. Photographs within the book show just how badly some areas of London were affected. Families were crowded into condemned tenement buildings with no running water or inside lavatories were the norm for the resilient East Enders of the time. Large families lived cheek by jowl with the prostitutes and brothels of Cable Street...

You don't get to see Jennifer's body
Advantages: plot
Disadvantages: acting
...This is a horror film that has seen a lot of poor reviews from the critics, as well as most of the public; however, I really enjoyed it!
The plot is as follows: a beautiful cheerleader, Jennifer, and her nerdy friend, Needy, go through life in small town America with a lot of differences but a strong friendship. When Jennifer is sacrificed by a band of satanists desperate for success, she comes back as a demon and uses her sexuality to lure men into a trap of death!
This is a horror, but it's also a tongue in cheek comedy. As a horror it does work, and there are four or five realky scary scenes. However, the real strength of the film is the comedy. The dialogue is really quirky and occasionally hilarious. For example, when a girl is stabbed in the chest, mortally wounded, she shouts "my tit!" This oddball speech is characteristic...

Worthing by the Sea
Advantages: Lots to do for young and old, Kids love it
Disadvantages: Traffic is bad in the summer and Bank holidays
...A seaside resort suituated by the south downs. If anyone doesn?t know where abouts Worthing is or haven?t really heard of it. Worthing is in West Sussex, about 10 miles west of Brighton and is about 60 miles away from London. The quickest route is usually the A27 too get here. For an alternative route, take the A259 coast road.
Having some family here, I spent a lot of time here on holidays.
I remember having to travel down as a kid, and not being the greatest car traveller, I was always car sick.
Worthing attracts visitors from all over, the summer months become very packed with visitors wanting to come down to the coast. Its especially popular for the bank holiday breaks.
History of Worthing
Worthing is mentioned in the Doomsday book, when the population was just 22. The population now is approaching 100,000 the town is...

Everyone Worth Knowing
Advantages: Great read, real page turner
Disadvantages: None
...Written by the best seller author of 'The Devil Wears Prada', Lauren Weisberger, 'Everyone Worth Knowing' follows the story of Bette who gets paid to party.
Bette is a VIP party planner who gains access to the hottest Manhattan parties and hot spots and knows everyone worth knowing.
New York is her latest sexy late-night playground.

Keighley Worth Valley Railway worth the visit!
Advantages: Wonderful periodic stations and rolling stock
Disadvantages: Is fairly short if you don't use the rover ticket option.
...Keighley & Worth Valley Railway is well worth the visit!
In the heart of Bronte country is a small but lovely steam railway line, known as the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway.
Despite its size and the area it runs through it is best known as the part of the filming location for the film The Railway Children.
Although it operates mostly steam trains, it does also on occasion run diesel trains often used by the locals going into Keighley! As such there is a good concession rate if you do live within a certain postcode area, so it is worth checking up on.
However, we visited as tourists, using Oxenhope as our destination station (you can have a round trip using any one of the main stations).
Once we arrived we had some time to spare so went to have a look at some carriages and other rolling stock in a barn set off from the main...

A refreshing tale of wartime midwifery
Advantages: An eyeopening account, honest and eventful
Disadvantages: Hard to believe at times, written in a slightly exaggerated style
...Being only 20, I read this book with an open mind with no experience or knowledge of this time era. I was encapsulated by the truth of these past memories and experiences of the author. Knowing she had gone through the words I was reading made it a really intriguing read. I found it hard to get into but once I was, I couldn't put it down. I wanted to know the next experience or the next truama and to who it was going to happen to.
Worth seems to cover all areas of London life, concentrating on the lower class slums where she was mainly based as a midwife. At times she brings the people she knows or parts of an event into the present, adding extra depth to the book. Some parts were hard to read, as they either seemed exaggerated due to her writing style, or over quite quickly. The people she speaks of are all vastly different...

Sam's Letters to Jennifer
Advantages: short chapters keeping you hooked
Disadvantages: none
...I am a HUGE fan of James Patterson especially his Alex Cross novels so when I seen he was taking a softer more light hearted approach in his writing I wasn't 100% sure I would want to read it, the only advice I can give you on this is don't be fooled or put off go out and get a copy immediately.
James Patterson has a fabulous way of writing that gets you hooked from the very first page and his chapters are kept to a maximum of about three pages so it makes you envision eveything better scence by scene as it unfolds.
Ok enough of my praise and love for the man and on with the book.We begin with Jennifer and learn abit about her with hhow she has had heartache in her life she seems to be getting back on track when she receives a call to say that her granmother is ill in hospital, enter Sam. Jennifer packs a few things and heads to...
