...Every year at Easter I watch one of two films, either "Monty Python's Life of Brian" or "Jesus Christ Superstar". This year it was the turn of big JC. The film tells of the last week of Jesus' life, from his entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday through to his crucifixion on Good Friday, (oops, hope that didn't spoil anything for anyone!), in the form of a Rock Musical. In case you were wondering, the words were written by Tim Rice, and the music by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Oh, and just to clarify, the version of the film that I am reviewing here is the more famous 1973 version, not the new version that came out in 2000. The Passion of the Christ

Advantages: Good Acting,
Disadvantages: Quite Barbaric In Places

..., something that I confess to not be completely familiar with. Having said that I have been brought up within the Church of England and although I have not worshipped in a Church since I was a Child, I still recall most of the more prominent stories from the Bible. The opening scenes of the film are somewhat strange but these set the tone for what is to follow. Within strangely lit surroundings we find the figure of Jesus, played by the relatively unknown Actor, Jim Caviezel, knelt down on the floor in the Garden of Gethsemane. Here we see Christ struggling to deal with the sins of the World. The whole film covers a period of just a few days of Christ's life, from his atonement in Gethsemane to his arrest and crucifixion. There are many events here that have been covered in other films time and time again but what Mel Gibson achieves here...

You'll get the power and the glory!

Advantages: Great support cast and costumes.
Disadvantages: Jesus's singing and acting skils.

...In this updated version of Jesus Christ Superstar the setting is that of a revolution taking place, Jesus's followers against Rome. Though the set and outfits are nice, the person who plays Jesus has ruined this film, the voice quality is poor and he couldn't act to save his life. The other singers are alright and manage to do a original take on the songs, Pilate is the best out of them all. Andrew Lloyd Webber's music was still exceptional and there were many good singers in the supporting cast yet some of the main characters voices were rather weak. It was an original interpretation of the rock opera and Judas's part in Jesus's downfall was represented in darker light. An album in which they explore different aspects of religion and the life of Jesus in their typically bombastic fashion????. 1. 1973's original JCSupes film

Advantages: great soundtrack
Disadvantages: quite dated

...I've seen the previous film depiction of this musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's adaptation on the life of Christ, that the previous reviewer here had talked about - but i never come to appreciate it, although it is qite interesting with its premise to take the whole musical in to another level as in a 90's setting; had it worked out? you decide. But in my little opinion it ain't so well done like this 'now-mediocre'-said first film rendition of the musical. Thus, here is my review about JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR the motion picture ... Carried along by perhaps the best recorded version of its music (thus with its soundtrack), this is perhaps indeed the best version of Jesus Christ Superstar. Its reason for appearing dated (circa 1973) is because that it had incorporated much of the trend/culture of the Jesus Freaks at the time...

Jesus' passion - my passion for Jesus.

Advantages: The simple fact that it's about Jesus.
Disadvantages: The sheer scale of blood and vivid scenes.

...The night before last I was on my way to the local Indian to get a takeaway. I had no plans to get anything else. But, as I have to walk past Blockbusters, I noticed that this film, The Passion Of The Christ, is now out on DVD. So, I bought it. The funny thing is, the man who served me said, "You do realise this is subtitled?". "Er, yes, that's one of the reasons I'm buying it!" was my reply. I hadn't seen it in the cinema and was a slightly unsure of what to expect. Yes, I'd seen all the hype in the news and media at the time. But, until you've seen the film, you'll be left wondering what all the hype was about. Yesterday I decided to watch it. A film of Biblical proportions

Advantages: Great music, great singing, great location. Thought-provoking film
Disadvantages: Dodgy 70's hairdo's
