...The Jimi Hendrix BBC sessions is a release that builds on the work of the much earlier, Radio One, release encompassing more recordings with improved sound quality. It brings together all of the songs that the group recorded for the BBC, as well as a few alternate takes, which were made to provide the content that got around the limitations on the playing of records during broadcasts, which was limited to seven hours split between both Radio 1and 2. At the time, the playing of records on the radio was seen almost as a discouragement for listeners to go out and purchase them for themselves, as if you could hear them on the radio for free, why go out and pay for them. Advantages: A compilation of great songs from a great musician

After this, "Stone Free" follows - a very upbeat track with yet another solo - well, I think they go without saying now, so I'll try and limit the mentioning of them!! "Crosstown Traffic" follows this track and personally I feel it upstages the previous track. The first may have been upbeat, but the rythym and tempo of CT is one of Hendrix's best, simple as. Other classics delivered on this disc include "If 6 was 9" - very much a jamming session kind of track - very little structure, sure pure adrenaline. Advantages: Great songs, great guitar, great drums, great, great, great.
Disadvantages: None whatsoever.

...and the clarity and tightness of rock with a trippy feel. This is a brilliant song. Red House Hugely bluesy number from Jimi here. Guitar playing is top notch, a conversation between Pete Townsend and Eric Clapton about Hendrix included the choice quote: 'this guys gunna put us both out of a job'. Its incredible the way in which Jimi approaches the guitar, completely natural and theres so much feel in it which is so evident when you hear covers of Hendrix which simply cannot replicate his playing. May This Be Love Poppy, trippy offering with dreamy guitar playing, tom rolls courtesy of Mitch and light bass from Noel. The lyrics are slightly cheesy but I think Jimi can be forgiven. ...Before i begin, i think i am going to follow suit from some of the other reviewers in saying the unless you have a good grasp of Jimi Hendrix's music and some of his earlier material, you should not get this. That is not to say that you shouldn't get this, as it is one of the greatest albums, but i would say that you should start with Are You Experienced and Axis: Bold As Love before progressing on to thsi album, as it is a huge step further beyond some of the materila on those, and you should first grasp his lyrics and guitar style before taking on this more flowing piece. Now that that is out of the way, i will introduce you to one of the best albums ever, and in my opinion probably the best Hendrix album in content and feel, as it is much more bluesy tha some of the others and shows his guitar skills at their best. Hendrix' true genius is on display all the way through this recording, as well as the Debut of his new line up of musicians - The Band of Gypsies (though he actually announces them as having the uber-hippie name: 'Gypsy, sun and rainbows') The recordings aren?t the highest of quality, due to inadequate miking and set-up at the actual gig, however the sheer quality of jimi?s improvisation and musicianship definitely overshadows this. ...This album is Hendrix in his natural state. Playing live where he can do as he pleases (Just as long as he never does it on the BBC again, listen to the CD , you?ll get it then) but it doesn?t suffer from poor sound quality as some Hendrix bootlegs that are around do. The album is made up of a collection of Hendrix?s own songs as well as a few covers and jams. It even made me (Who was born after Hendrix died) nostalgic, as the CD includes various DJ?s introducing the band and chit chatter between the band. It?s almost like being there! Whether you?re already a Hendrix nut or this will be your first Hendrix album you?ll love it....
