My Somewhat beautiful Johannesburg
Advantages: Vibrant, plenty to do, fantastic people
Disadvantages: crime
...I had the opportunity of visiting Johannesburg in a very different light in January of this year, as a tourist. For you see I was born and raised there, but my boyfriend is very much English and had never been to Africa. When you are born somewhere you tend to disregard alot of the tourist stuff (much what my boyfriend does in London) which I can now see I missed out.
Johannesburg is a thriving bustling city with its great history, and vibrant people it is very captivating, and holds you in its grips long after you have left.
Yes there is a safety aspect to life in Johannesburg, but so is there to most places you go too, and generally if you hold your wits about you and be smart for the most you will be fine and shouldn't come across anything too big (although this is not a guarantee). I know how off putting it can be when you...

Must see place for all children
Advantages: Bunnys!!!!
Disadvantages: Having to leave
...This is an afternoon to relax let the children run around and play with the animals.
There are many types of bunny parks, these are like the parks in England but they breed rabbits, birds and sometimes have other types of animals.
The one that i visited alot when in a town on the outskirts of Johannesburg called Boxburgs. The main feature of this park was a historical train. There must of been 1000s of bunnys there and you can just see how much children love them with the smiles on there faces.
This is a great place for taking photos.
Toilet blocks and braii (bbq) facilities
No one will know what you are talking about it you ask where the bbq stands are
free entry sometimes donations asked to keep the park running.
normally 9-6 everyday and a market on the sunday
i only say poor transport as there public transport is alot...

City of Gold
Advantages: Very Cheep, Friendly people, Weather
Disadvantages: saftey
...I lived in Gauteng-Johannesburg for roughly 15 years before I moved to the UK. If you do decide to go on Holiday there you won?t be sorry, there is so much to see and do in Johannesburg form museums to casinos and theme parks to nature reserves, and all this entertainment within the same place. The nightlife is also excellent; unlike the UK taxis are not available early hours in the morning so you have to be very careful when it comes to arranging transportation

First meeting with Africa
Advantages: Kruger park near by, multi cultural experience, Sun City
Disadvantages: They say there is a lot of crime
...This review of Joburg is a summary of my three trips to South Africa and Johannesburg (or Joburg as it is often called). I guess it is a bit different from my other travelogues because this is more based on the impressions that I'm left with after going there in 1997, 1998 and 1999.
I didn't not go to Joburg as a ordinary "tourist" because I met up with an internet friend...a friend that would become my wife but that is another story :-) The first thing I did when I came to the airport in Joburg was to go to the toilet. When washing my hands I saw this sign urging people to save the water because it is "precious to mother Africa". I come from Norway and most of the time water shortage is not a problem around here (it rains quite a lot in western Norway :-). When I came out of the airport I discovered that Joburg wasn't that much...

South Africa, Cape Town and Johannesburg
Advantages: Great Scenic views on the tour
Disadvantages: Can be hot, humid and sticky...
...from the cage and play beach volleyball. Hiking at the nearby Hottentots Holland Mountains, with a Nature Reserve for prime bird watching and mountain biking. Buffet breakfast is served on the patio every morning, next to the sparkling swimming pool and excellent finest meals are served in the evenings from the Lodge dining room. Light lunch is served from the bars and beach huts, but also in the garden of the Eikendal Vineyards cellar.
Day Fourteen:
Morning Domestic flight SAA332 11.55 from Cape Town, arriving in the afternoon at 13.55. Transfer to overnight Park Hyatt hotel in Johannesburg. Have a candle lit dinner from the hotel restaurant looking down on to Johannesburg. Experience the lively entertainment of singing and dancing in the local bars, and visit the night street market for traditional African clothing...

The Crime Capital's Airport
Advantages: Nice and clean
Disadvantages: Expensive shops
...Placed right in the centre of the world capital of crime, you’ve got to watch out for your belongings at Johannesburg, South Africa. But what about the airport and not just the cities problems?
I visited Johannesburg International Airport about a year ago, and was not disappointed. I was there as I was unfortunate enough to have to spend five hours there, but was it really unfortunate?
Well, I must point out that I wasn't looking forward to the prospect of having to face a quarter of a day in an airport, but what I was glad about was the airport that I was going to have to face it in.
After a long eight-hour flight from London Heathrow (opinion coming soon), me and my family were pretty knackered, and we really just wanted to sleep well. But, there was still a short leg of our journey to Durban left.
We landed after...

Interesting city
Advantages: Great shopping & nightlife
Disadvantages: High crime levels
...In particular, Johannesburg. Jo?burg is an enormous city and home to countless thousands of people, so as you would expect it has all the amenities that this number of people would require. Jo?burg airport unfortunately does not inspire the visitor with confidence upon arrival (very drab and grey!), but thankfully it does improve after that!
Whether you enjoy shopping (which has to be a must if you?re from the UK because the clothes are so much cheaper!), or want to do other things such as golf, you can find plenty to keep you occupied.
If, however, you fancied a change, try going on safari to one of the many game reserves, or try Sun City (about 30 minute flight from Jo?burg).
The nightlife in Jo?burg is very good, in particular some of the more regional areas (the city is just too big), like Roodaport. This offers night...

Good city for locals, but not for tourists
Advantages:
Disadvantages: Dangerous to the clueless
...Jo'burg (as it's known) has plenty to offer locals and residents, but not too much to see for tourists. It is a fairly large city with little sites and not a very long cultural history. These days tourists travel to Soweto to observe shanti life in the shebeens and 'locations', but this is a very dangerous thing to do. That is about the only significant thing to do whilst visiting Johannesburg. The nightlife centres in areas such as Rosebank and Melville, and if you know where to go, this can be great. Jo'burg holds an annual cultural music festival, which is great to attend. If you are into Afro-jazz and Kwaito, this is this place to be. Jo'burg boasts huge shopping malls which is great to check out if you are into spending money, and with the exchange rate being what it is, you could score a few bargains....

Africa's Eden
Advantages: People, food, vibe
Disadvantages: Not many
...Johannesburg (or Joburg) is truly African city and this is why I love it.
Despite Joburgs crime (which in my opinion is highly over rated) and 3rd world elements multi-racial, multi cultural metropolis buzzes 24/7.
Shopping is fantastic. From its flea-markets (Rosebank Rooftop is a must) to its upmarket shopping centers such as Sandton City and the Rosebank Mall, everything is cheap for the tourist. Quality product at dirt-cheap prices. Where else in the world?
Nightlife for over 18s is also great. Live music, 'chill-out' bars and nightclubs along with many guys and gals can be found on Mellville's highstreet, a must for anyone wanting to experience the true 'new South Africa'. For the more upmarket clubber there is always Rivonia, Randburg as well as the city's many casinos (in which the nightclubs are situated). Joburgs...

What a place.
Advantages: Cheap, and accessible.
Disadvantages: Can be dangerous.
...This oppinion is not really on joburg, but more South Africa.
If you are thinking about going on holiday in Africa any time soon. I would have to say that the best possible place for you to go would have to be South Africa. I say this because it has a range of leisure pursuits so vast that you could spend an entire year there and not have to repeat yourself once.
It caters for every different type of person, from the sports fan to the wine lover to the intellectual. You could go on the wine route from Johannesburg to Stellenbosch or do the highest bungee jump in the southern hemisphere; you could even do a safari.
You could go there as the serious tourist in search of new experiences, such as hiking through the Drakensburg Mountains, or could just go and bask in the sunlight at Sun City.
If you are the sports fan then you...
