John the Entertaining

Advantages: Very emotional writing
Disadvantages: Quite slow paced

...Up until now, I'd only ever heard of ''John the Revelator'' as a song. Judging from the several mentions of the song in the story and given that author Peter Murphy works in the music press, I suspect that's where the title of this novel came from as well. How much I enjoy the song depends on which version of it I hear, but with no such concerns with the book, I was able to enjoy it fully without worrying if someone had done a better version elsewhere that I was missing out on. John Devine is a teenager stuck in a small Irish town with a single mother, no real friends and a rather worrying fascination for bodily parasites, mostly intestinal worms. His only human contact is with his mother Lily, Mrs Nagle, an elderly neighbour and Harry Farrell, a local jack-of-all-trades. His only break from the house and from school is Sunday Mass. Not...

With friends like Peter's . . .

Advantages: Easy watching, some good acting and great vocal performances
Disadvantages: Acting from some of the cast is a bit over-the-top

...This is one of those films that nobody else seems to have heard of and - up until a few years ago - neither had I. Indeed, I have my passion for 1980s pop music to thank for my knowledge that this film even exists. For reasons I don't even remember, I came across a website listing the lyrics to Tears For Fears' mid-eighties hit Everybody Wants To Rule The World and whichever page I viewed mentioned a variety of films, TV programmes and albums that the song featured in. One of these was Peter's Friends . . . so I admit it, I first watched this film because one of my favourite songs was part of the soundtrack! (I can sometimes be a bit more shallow than other people believe . . . actually there are quite a few 1970s/1980s songs in here, which I think suits the mood of the film.) The Magic of Peter Pan

Advantages: Lots of special features and a great movie

John Mayall still Britain's Best Blues performer

Advantages: Great night for British Blues fans....
Disadvantages: An expectation of vintage guitar work, somewhat lacking in conviction

...Billed as the return of the 'Big 2', the series of live concerts featuring the Peter Green Splinter Group and John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, arrived at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on November 13th. This is an excellent venue for the devotee to actually hear the music of their heroes, so I settled in to re-live the music of 2 great acts. First to take the stage was the Peter Green group and to much acclaim a confident set began to form. There was an immediate feeling that although fronting the band, Peter Green was not actually leading by example, and throughout played more of a supportive role to the excellent Nigel Watson. There were signs through the occasional riff that Peter Green was still a guitar master, but you felt that there was never going to be the energy shown from his earlier work with John Mayall and with Fleetwood...

Poor Show Peter Alan!
