John Smith's Bitter

Advantages: A good basic pint
Disadvantages: Perhaps a little too basic?

...There's nothing that is innately special about John Smith's Bitter. Don?t get me wrong. I am not being critical of this beer. Because I am not saying that there's anything wrong with it. Far from it, it is a perfectly acceptable pint, but if you are looking for a more complicated depth of flavour of ?for example- Hobgoblin, or Timothy Taylor?s Landlord, then you might be disappointed. However, John Smith?s Bitter is a nice, clear pint with a good, acceptable colour. It has a faintly metallic taste, which is not unpleasant and adds to the refreshing quality of this simple but honest pint. But there is an incredibly ?morish? and very pleasing surprising hoppy aftertaste which makes this beer perhaps even more tempting than it would otherwise be. This beer is available canned, but the ideal way to drink this particular beer...

...JOHN SMITH'S SMOOTH - WHAT'S ALL THAT ABOUT? Picture the scene: Robbo2000 is sat in some old man's pub in some town that he is way too cool to be in, with two men who will be politely referred to as "Real Ale Aficionados" (because I'm not sure if I'm allowed to refer to them as "sad, beardy gimps"). The Real Ale Aficionados are each clutching a half pint of "Old Vicar's Country Badger" (or something equally nonsensical, which is really gone-off Tetley's with a different label stuck on the pump) in one hand, and a massive notepad full of scores for ales they have tasted the length and breadth of Britain in the other hand. The degree of pleasure they are deriving from their ales, Robbo 2000 is grateful that neither Real Ale Bod of them has a third hand. Yours truly, meanwhile, has a pint of the same beer in one hand and some cool shit...

Advantages: It ain't lager . . .
Disadvantages: . . . but it ain't proper bitter either

...I first encountered John Smith's bitter in the late Seventies, when it was a decent, middle of the road pint at a reasonable price. That same beer (or something reasonably similar to it) can still be found in some, more traditional, boozers where it is now sold as John Smith's Cask Bitter. Sadly more and more pubs seem to be dropping the cask version and promoting its illegitimate offspring, John Smith's Smooth Bitter. Don't get me wrong. I don't wear sandals and a high fibre cardigan, I'm clean-shaven, and if people want to drink imitation lager and alcopops they have a perfect right to do so. But it grieves me to see our traditional beers being consigned to the slop tray of history just because an increasing number of landlords are too lazy and incompetent to look after draught bitter properly. ...partner, or love of your career ? ... Mr and Mrs Smith are a couple in love, who seem to co-operate well with each other, even though they are each keeping a massive secret from the other. The fact that the two main characters are together in real life, I think it makes it better and somehow more realistic. The casting for these roles were obviously well thought about and in my eyes, both parts could not have been cast together. Brad Pitt plays John Smith, while Angelina Jolie takes up her role as Jane Smith. The fact is, they just work so well together it is almost realistic in fiction. Being a man, I am not as big a Brad Pitt fan as some people out there, but I would still say, he is one of the better actors available in the film industry and plays his role very well in this hit. ...Up until now, I'd only ever heard of ''John the Revelator'' as a song. Judging from the several mentions of the song in the story and given that author Peter Murphy works in the music press, I suspect that's where the title of this novel came from as well. How much I enjoy the song depends on which version of it I hear, but with no such concerns with the book, I was able to enjoy it fully without worrying if someone had done a better version elsewhere that I was missing out on. ...Frazzles, that is a word that I struggle to associate with these crispy bacon corn flavoured snacks. Now the only thing that springs to mind is that you may well call over cooked bacon frazzled. I am now wondering if I might have accidentally donated my brain to the British Heart Foundation by accident! The supermarket shelves are stacked with potato crisps and corn flavoured snacks and they come in practically every flavour that you could ever think of. Though it seems to me that Walkers have the monopoly when it comes to inventing new flavours.
