Early Cash and I don't mean money

Advantages: Classic , fresh , raw , entertaining , a little piece of history .
Disadvantages: May be too dated for some .

...Background Johnny Cash had been recording and playing for quite a while before I came across him properly as an artiste. In the early seventies my brother bought "Johnny Cash live at St Quentin" and it was a real eye opener, or should I say ear opener to me. Previously to this I had sort of heard him in passing but not taken that much notice. As a flighty teenager he had seemed far too old and straight to appeal to me. It took my advancing years to truly get a feel for the man and his music. However "San Quentin" was one of the first rungs on the ladder. My boyfriend at the time, and Husband to this day, bought the L.P before I knew him and so, among our differing tastes in music, this was one firm favourite. American IV by Johnny Cash

Advantages: Play - When you're weary and feeling small...
Disadvantages: Don't Play - When you're with your skater buddies.

...This fabulous album was robbed of being the last throw by the late, great Johnny Cash by the dodgy decision to release American V, a wholly lesser album. So If you have no other Cash recording in your collection you must get this one. It's the voice of a reformed hell-raiser, drug addict and truly God-fearing man on the brink of final personal oblivion. It's difficult to tell when the tremble in his voice is emotion and when it's simple frailty. I like to believe it's the one caused by the other. Stand-out tracks - The monumental "Hurt" is the show-stopper here, made more emotional by the realisation that Cash is singing with first-hand experience of the subject matter. The cover of Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus" is a close second for track of the album. Succinct and direct acoustic guitar backing pushes the song along nicely...

He recorded well over 75 albums and some 1100 tracks in a career spanning 50 years. He died at the end of 2003, shortly after the release of this album. WHAT'S THE ALBUM LIKE? --------------------------------------- Johnny knew he was dying when he recorded this album and so it makes it possibly one of the saddest, sentimental albums ever in that respect. He recorded a quadrilogy of albums in the 21st century with Rick Rubin (who produced Beastie Boys and Run DMC in the 80s and Korn in the 90s). Cleansing Gothic Country from 'Dirty' Cash.

Disadvantages: Leaves You With a 'Country' album in your collection (kind of)

...still finds tenderness in 'That Lucky Old Sun' - a song with which he won a talent contest as a young man. But we also get the honest end-of-life ballad of 'Nobody' - a song John Lee Hooker could have sang and kept his blues cred. JC (no coindidence he has these initials) was resurrected as a performer with a solo set in the Viper Club, where many young US celebs hang out. Indeed this was the last haunt of River Pheonix, whose brother plays Cash in the new bio-pic 'I Walk The Line', which is sure to spark retrospective interest. It's a pity he didn't really live long enough to enjoy the fruits of his newly-found cult status. Somebody once said that Johnny Cash could read the phone book and make it compelling. Advantages: 104 songs means great value for money, plus, a book!
Disadvantages: Not a chance of getting this on your CD shelf, it is a tall book too!

...I couldn't believe my eyes when I realised that a review hadn't been written on this great box set. Mainly because it is Johnny Cash, and hence, a legend (as the title of the product suggests)! I shall start straight away with mentioning that you won't get a huge description about every song on the album, as you would with my normal reviews. "Why, Alastair, WHYYYYY?!!!"
