Now a regularly working unit, this trio capitalises on the distinctive combination of Hamiet Bluiett's baritone saxophone, D.D. Jackson's keyboards and Mor Thiam's West African djembe drum. The Illinois-born Bluiett is mainly known as a founder member of the World Saxophone Quartet, while Jackson and Thiam are frequent collaborators with David Murray. Even though Jackson provides half the tunes, the album still comes across as an instrumentally democratic affair. The main elements making up their sound are funk, R&B, free jazz and traditional African music, all rearing up in varying ratios. Bluiett's honking and barking baritone provides the backbone of each tune, taking turns to provide walking basslines and high register solos. Jackson's palette is extremely broad, traversing avant garde grand piano cascades, slinking organ and sampled marimba sounds. Thiam's percussion may well be limited to the one drum but the djembe has a whole repertoire of sounds lurking within its single skin. During "Ayse", Jackson initiates an impressionistic sprinkling that's reminiscent of the Art Ensemble, Bluiett responding with his ultra-danceable "Is There A Problem?". How could you refuse the polite invitation of begoggled Danny Wallace in Join Me? You don't know what you could be missing out on. It's all about living for the moment in this quirky, seemingly pointless yet addictive narrative. Finding himself with too much time on his hands after quitting his BBC job, Danny revels in "sitting around in his pants" and generally taking a break from the responsibilities of working life. Danny attends the funeral of his great uncle Gallus and finds out that he had set up a commune of like-minded people to escape Swiss small town small-mindedness in the 1940s. Intrigued by this idea, on his return to London Danny places a cryptic advert in the classified ads paper Loot and gets some surprising results. His Norwegian radio-producer girlfriend Hanne is bemused and infuriated that this has become more than a transient interest; it takes over his life--and hers. The number of "joinees"--people replying to his ad--escalates as word gets out about this new "happy cult", but without a clue about what he wants to achieve, or do with all his newfound friends, Danny has to think fast as dissent rises in the ranks. Now the reluctant leader of a troop of random hopefuls, he maintains their interest with obscure e-mails and watches as his joinees meet and bond. Whatever he had created, it was bigger than he had anticipated. From an initially puerile idea, it had grown into something of a social experiment--why were people willing to take the risk? What was lacking in their lives that they thought they might get out of contacting a stranger? Advantages: A Few Good Songs, Contains The Best Single Of Their Career
Disadvantages: Very Dark, Scary, Some Poor Songs
...are in turmoil with one another, quibbling over which musical direction they should take. The results of these frictions are sadly clearly evident in the Band's second Album "Join Hands" which was released in 1979.
"Join Hands" is widely considered to be Siouxsie and the Banshees worst Album. However, before you dismiss it you must bear in mind that this comparison is on the on the back of such...

Disadvantages: totally non-fiction?
