Jolly Carlton Hotel - Amsterdam

Advantages: Friendly staff, modern decor, lots of handy facilities, great location
Disadvantages: Rooms are a bit on the small side and cramped

...the best available double room when we got to the hotel. The hotel that we had booked was the four star 'Jolly Carlton'. I had a look on the internet and it seemed wonderful. We were told that check in wasn't until 2pm, but when we arrived in Amsterdam in the morning, we though that we would go to the hotel to see if we could leave our luggage there so we didn't have to drag it around the city until 2pm. The hotel is about a 15 minute walk from the central station, which we managed no problem, even with our luggage. If you don't want to walk then there are also several trams you can take, either from the central station or from the centre of the town, though it really isn't that far and it is a fairly flat road all the way, and it means you can window shop as you walk! Advantages: Great and effective way of teaching Jolly Phonics
Disadvantages: none really

I bought this book and CD when my son started school as his primary school uses the Jolly Learning system to teach reading and I wanted something to encourage his learning outside of school hours. We listened to it in the car while travelling and it really helped him learn all his sounds very quickly. It also helped me as a parent to learn all the different sounds as I was not familiar with phonics at all and it enabled me to be very supportive towards his reading development. The book is also very helpful as the Jolly Learning system uses movement and image to aid the learning process and makes it fun. ...When choosing a hotel in Amsterdam the traveller is faced with a multitude of choices and you're never sure exactly which hotel is good or bad. I hope this opinion helps to clear the confusion. We booked the Hotel Jolly Carlton from the internet where we got an excellent deal. The Hotel Jolly Carlton is owned by an Italian chain of hotels which have properties throughout Europe. It is situated right next to the Singel Flower Market and some of the rooms are lucky enough to overlook the Muntplein which chimes each hour on the hour 24 hours a day. A jolly way to learn how to reed and rite!

Jolly close to all the best bits of Amsterdam

Advantages: Good location, near enough to the key sights, far enough away not to get ripped off

...Just come back from a 3 night stay in the beautiful City of Amsterdam. Decided to stay in the Jolly Hotel for no other reason than Price, Location, and amenities, as after some significant Internet 'research' the Jolly Hotel seemed to have most of the criteria myself and my wife were looking for. Let's face it, Amsterdam is the place you go for a few days to see the sights, sample the local cuisine or plantlife (depending on your taste), and generally chillout. The Hotel is just the base, a place to crawl back to when you've had too much Heineken. The quality of the restaurant food is almost irrelevent as when you're in a City like Amsterdam the last thing you should be doing is having a meal in the Hotel. What Do Ants, Tennis And Castanets Have In Common?

Advantages: Excellent introduction to phonics, fun, easy...Brilliant!
Disadvantages: I would have liked a demonstartion of pronunciation at the beggining of each song

...wasn't there, I mean it?s 'lll-amp' not 'luh-amp' right? I had noticed previously that although my daughter could name any letter I pointed to, she was having difficulty relating it to a word. For instance we would play I spy and I may say 'something beggining with Muh' and she'd come out with anything. I would try saying 'Muh, Muh, Muh....' to give her a clue, and she would reply 'Muh, Muh, Muh ...Grass! " or something similar. I put it down to her still only being four and not being at that stage yet. Now though I realise it was the pronunciation I'd actually gave her that was causing her confusion. After just a month at school using the 'Jolly Phonics' system my daughter can now tell me what any word begins with. Now something beginning with 'Mmm' is met with Mirror, Moon, and Mummy! A horrid/fantastic childrens joke book!

Advantages: A fun book that involves great jokes, and all the characters from the series.
Disadvantages: Some of Henry's joke are rude!

...There is one universal thing that unites my son and daughter at dinnertimes, this being ?Horrid Henry?, the new series gets shown at dinnertime, this effectively gives me ½ hours peace to get the lunches done for the next day without the habitual fighting that seems to be happening at the moment! My son is not quite old enough to sit and listen to the hundreds of Horrid Henry books we seem to have accumulated, but my daughter is!
