...I would just like to write a review on Jools Holland Best of Friends, a CD with a DVD bonus pack on the king of rhythm and blues. We all know of him from his specials at New Year, along with the numerous shows that he does during the year. As the title does actually point out, this is all about Jools performing with his friends. The tracks on the CD are as follows, along with who actually performed them with him: 1. Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra - Tuxedo Junction. 2. Lulu - Where have all the good guys gone? 3. Chrissie Hynde - Out of this world. 4. Review of Best Of Friends (+DVD) [Digipak] - Jools Holland

Jools-"everyone's beautiful!"

Disadvantages: about 2 tracks sound the same

...Jools Holland is a dude-nuff said! I have nearly all of his albums, including the album of his lead singer, Sam Brown. I have had this album for about 3 years and I still love to hear it. It is just such a feel good CD, and the songs are lively, thought provoking, emotional, and fun! The songs<<<< Jools and his band have collaborated with many great musicians including Sting, George Harrison, Jamiroquai and the Stereophonics. What I also love about this is that Jools has done songs with his own band too, and one is Valentine Moon (which happens to be my favourite track) with Sam Brown. The songs themselves involve new versians of current songs, freshly composed tunes by the Jools and the people he plays with, or tunes Jools and his band do with the star guests. Jools...the students love you

Disadvantages: Only marred by the fact that he did not play any of his Squeeze hits

...When i forked out £40 for a ticket to my Uni Summer Ball, i was dubious to whether i had invested my money wisely. On reflection i certainly had. For a start the money that i used to buy the ticket with came thanks to my student loan. Until i start paying it with interest (Bastard Labour), i am finding it easy to con myself into thinking that it is free!!! Besides i had to go as it is my final year. Anyhow... the line up- no one special really... oh and Jools Holland. Before this weekend i had always considered Jools Holland as a man that my parents listen to ( although i do rather like his hits from his days in Squeeze- Annie get your gun- an all that). I had many a pre-conception as his preferred style is now jazz/jazzy stuff (nothing to do with porn, i would like to emphasise), as well as the majority of his 'Later with...' show...

The down-to-earth boogie man

Advantages: A fascinating life, told in a friendly chatty manner
Disadvantages: No index - albeit a minor disadvantage

...Jools Holland has always come across, particularly on television, as a thoroughly likeable, down-to-earth chap next door, the kind of person you could chat to over the garden fence. This memoir of his life, from childhood in a flat in Pimlico to leader of a band invited to play in front of the leaders of the G8 nations at a summit meeting, comes across in very similar fashion. From early days, Jools was clearly always fascinated by music. It was but a short step from his being spellbound by the family's collection and buying records by the Beatles and Stevie Wonder, to learning the piano at school and joining a group at around the time of the mid-70s punk rock and new wave explosion. Jools - simply the best?

...For a great night out, and brilliant value for money, then a trip to see Jools Holland must feature in your list of have dones. It's not for nothing that he must be known as (one of) the best keyboard players in the world. It is though, probably a misnomer to just call it a Jools Holland review, as his big band is also just aesome as well. An evening with Jools Holland starts fairly quietly, with the support act - which tends to be solo acoustic - the times I have seen him, supports have been his son, and his guitarist, Mark Flanagan, who are also both excellent musicians in their own right. However, moving on to the main event takes you onto another plane entirely . Once he has started, there is barely a pause for breath as around two hours of boogy woogy & blues are pumped out - all so impressive but seemingly so effortless by both...

Keep it going Jools

Advantages: Almost always good music. Jools's boogie piano.
Disadvantages: none at the moment

...No doubt like many who are scrambling for something to watch late at night (not talking about filth on channel 5!) I often end up watching Jools Hollands Later show, and usually enjoy it immensely, but with such a broad band of styles and performers its always going to be hit and miss - but thankfully its mostly hit. I think Jools should be credited for bringing virtual unknowns on the show as well - and they always have talent, they thankfully never allow formulated commercial crap like Boyzone and numerous chart topping musicianless 'bands' on the show - this would seriously bring it down to TOTP standard. Ouch. If the show keeps up this quality of music, whatever the style then it will always remain good....

HUGE JAM IN YOUR LIVING ROOM

...The Later series with Jools Holland picks up from where the Old Grey Whistle Test left off combining live studio performances with band interviews - presented by musician, Jools Holland. The series includes 'Later.. Louder' (which is punk and heavier rock), 'Ten Years Later' (bands popular in the 90's), and 'Cool Britania' (British artists). The 'Later.. Giants' covers the performances by artists who are literally 'Giants' in the business and without fail all of the artists on this DVD are incredibly influential and occasionally some of the artists are Icons. What I enjoy most about Jools Holland, is the fact that he, himself, is a great musician, so the programme becomes like a jam session when he plays along with his guests. I think it would be amazing to meet Jools and play on his show, as the atmosphere is terrific - much like...

...Last Saturday night I was fortunate enough to see Jools Holland live at Kew Gardens. I am old enough to remember him from his Squeeze days, and sometimes watch his show “Later with Jools Holland”. Other than that I have to admit that I did not know much else about his work, although of course I knew that he is considered one of the best pianists around. Now I don’t want to be personal but Jools Holland is not a sex god by any means. But what a guy and what a personality! With his charm, charisma and obvious intelligence Jools, backed by his “Rhythm and Blues Orchestra”, had the whole audience transfixed during their hour and a half on stage. They played some of the most fabulous, funky jazz music and blues that I have ever heard, allowing the audience to enjoy some of Jools’s superb piano...
