Hiking on the Franz Josef glacier

Advantages: Challenging, amazing views, doing something you will never forget!
Disadvantages: Cold!

...Franz Josef glacier is on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. Nowhere else in the world, at this latitude, have glaciers advanced so close to the sea. High snow fall on the tops of the mountains becomes compact and turns to ice, this ice is then forced down the mountain and is what causes the glacier to move. The glacier moves at least 1 metre a day, sometimes up to 5 metres a day! ***Franz Josef town*** Franz Josef is a small town and very 'touristy' - it wouldn't exist if it wasn't for the thousands of people coming to hike on the glaciers each week. It is a bit more expensive here than in the bigger towns so fill up the car with fuel and change any foreign money before you get here if possible. Franz Josef

Advantages: Friendly town, good activities - prices are competitive, lots of places to eat, very experienced guides
Disadvantages: prices were fairly expensive compared to other tourist towns - supermarkets prices were noticabley more.

...Franz Josef is just amazing..the town is so relaxed & welcoming and the backdrop of the glacier is so beautiful! My sister & I did the Heli-Hike activity; we flew up the glacier (higher than you would go on the full day trek!) then we walked around on the ice for 2 hours before flying back down to the ground. This was one of the best activities I did in NZ..so different to anything else! We climbed through ice caves & saw some beautiful natural ice sculptures - it was like being in a different world! & we had two experienced guides who were always on hand to help us climb up the steep hills. The Heli-Hike was a bit of a splurge for us being on travellers budgets, so if you're looking for a cheaper activity you can do a full day (6 hour) trek up the glacier. But the helicopter ride swayed our decision..2 new experiences in 1...

Franz Josef and Fox glacier New Zealand

Advantages: Great weather can be combined with an icy experience on a glacier
Disadvantages: i live so far away!!

Franz Josef Glacier has many tour groups that are able to give you the opportunity to experience the most spectacular glacier environment available to the general public anywhere in the world, offering a range of glacier hiking tours to suit all levels of fitness and ability. Franz Josef Glacier is located on the West cost of New Zealand's south island and is one of the most spectacular sights there is. This was the 1st glacier I have ever seen and what a sight it was. In order to get to it you have to take a 10minute walk to get a good view and another 20 minutes to get to the base! The public however cannot go onto the glacier without a guide. Experiencing an Icy Franz Joseph

Advantages: An amazing experience,
Disadvantages: Weather dependant so you could miss it even if you are in the area.

A SWEET, TASTY GERMAN

Advantages: A popular all-rounder
Disadvantages: May be too sweet for some tastes

...Mmmm, this is one of my favourites! Yes folks ? back on to the booze again and back to the white wine ? my preferred tipple at the moment. Liebfraumilch, in all its various guises (including the tacky 70s brands such as Blue Nun and Black Tower) has been in and out of fashion over the years but seems to remain a staple favourite on the shelves of most supermarkets, wine shops (and drinkers? fridges!). I tend to buy Josef Prader Liebfraumilch because it is available at my local Alldays stores in three different bottles sizes at a comparatively good price (although they are always more expensive than a large supermarket). Of course it is the larger 150cl (litre and a half) bottle which is most important to me! This size is priced at £5.99 a bottle, the litre size is £4.99 and the standard 75cl bottle is about £3.99-£4.30 but I am not...

Luxury hotel close to the Old Town Square

Advantages: Excellent location, high quality hotel
Disadvantages: Quite expensive but worth every penny!

For any of you readers, who like to treat yourselves on holiday there is a Tony Guy Hairdressing, state-of-the-art salon, located just two minutes away, offers exclusive for guests of Hotel Josef special rates (cut and blow dry)!! Worth a visit - especially discounted! There you have it - this is one of the best hotels I have ever stayed at and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I would definitely recommend anyone going to Prague to look out for this hotel - especially a special offer as it is quite expensive - but worth every penny!!...

Sumptuous works by a little-known composer

Advantages: Good recordings of unfamiliar, but rewarding works
Disadvantages: None

..., particularly evident in the middle sections of these works. Another feature of Karlowicz's writing is his tendency to pick himself up from this melancholia and stride purposefully onwards; at these points, the example of Richard Strauss is very evident. Other composers who came to mind in listening to these works were Josef Suk, Mahler and, at one point, even Tchaikovsky, but here is interesting voice or great orginality and creative imagination. The recording, by a Polish orchestra, offers quality as well as value. I bnought this a fortnight ago, and I have been so impressed that I have just ordered Vol 2....

You can't cheat fate

Advantages: Exciting. A real page-turner

...I am a big Dean Koontz fan and have read most of his books with great enjoyment. Lifw Expectancy was all I expected it to be. The book begins with the death of Josef Tock who makes a series of predictions about his grandson who is yet to be born including details of his birth weight, height and so on. Shortly after his death, Jimmy Tock is born and sure enough the predicted weight etc was spot on. But now comes the rub, the grandfather also predicted that on five specific dates, Jimmy Tock would experience terrible things. And with the accuracy of the first predictions, what else could Jimmy's parents do but believe them? At the same time, another baby was being born, the child of the world's greatest clown, Konrad Beezo This time the birth did not go well - the mother dies Unable to contain his grief, the clown blames...

Review of Life Expectancy - Dean Koontz

Gripping, Compelling and Haunting

Advantages: Intelligent thriller, good acting, superb director
Disadvantages: None

...across in the silence between the two leads than if the gaps had been filled with unnecessary and tension-spoiling dialogue. Haas manages to avoid the usual cliches of a child actor and is very convincing. Josef Sommer is also good in a supporting role, and look out for a young Viggo Mortensen making a brief appearance as part of the Amish community. The film also has a few deft comic touches that lighten the intense atmosphere, the best amongst these in my opinion being when Ford emerges in his borrowed Amish clothes. The direction is intelligent, the acting superb, the script flawless and the story powerful. It is gripping right until the end and lingers in the memory. Most definitely worth the viewing time....
