...I am really into my classic film stars at the moment. So when I was looking through Amazon the other week, I was very excited to see there was a DVD release of a Judy Garland concert. I have admired Judy since seeing her in The Wizard of Oz on TV, when I was a child. My Mum had a biography on her too, so I looked through that several times. Her life was fascinating, but ultimately tragic and she died in 1969, the year I was born. She was only 47 years old when she died. I also really like Liza Minnelli, Judy?s daughter. I recently bought the DVD of her Liza with a Z concert ? which has become one of my eleven-year-old daughter?s favourites! For Those Still Chasing the Rainbow...

Advantages: A good mixture of movie songs and Decca Recordings
Disadvantages: It is just another Garland compliation

...Judy Garland's career spanned 45 of her 47 years. From the age of two when she ran out on to the stage of her parents' theatre yelling " I wanna sing some more" till she died from a barbiturates overdose in London, she dedicated her life to entertaining people and in that she succeeded. She gave hundreds of Vaudeville performances with her two sisters, starred in 32 feature films (18 of these in ten years), had her own TV show, gave over 1100 live performances between 1951 and 1969, and recorded over a hundred singles. Now of course they aren't all featured on this album but with three discs and 60 songs, "The essential Judy Garland" covers the 1930's and 40's. ...So the king and queen of daytime T.V have upped sticks and moved to the ungodly hour of 5pm on channel 4 leaving This morning Richard and Judy less. Their new show is called and is shown between 5 and 6pm on weekdays. I?ve been off work after an operation for a couple of weeks, so I?ve been watching lots of daytime T.V. So I?ve been able to watch this programme, usually I?d be just getting home from work when it?s nearly finished. Which brings me to the point that the 5-6 time slot is a strange time for a talk show, it?s not quite daytime T.V or an evening slot. Thinking about Richard and Judy?s former incarnation on This Morning, I?d say that the first difference I noticed was the set. The studio is very blue and turquoise with an art deco look. It is aired each and every weekday at 5pm and lasts for 1 hour. What I like about the programme is that they have a varied selection of guests on there every day. Today, for instance, they had Noel Edmunds on the show (27 July '06). Judy Garland's Cinematic Swan Song

...Many of you only recognize her name from watching the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz, but Judy Garland was much, much more of a screen presence after that, her first role of Dorothy. I have adored her in every movie I have seen her in, including Meet Me In St. Louis, Easter Parade and A Star Is Born, all highly recommended if you enjoy musicals. In 1962 at the age of 39 when she still was pretty, a little heavy-waisted with long, slender legs, and her eyes sparkling, she made her final, starkly dramatic, exuberantly comedic musical, I Could Go On Singing. Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54

Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.

...At first I wasn't convinced by up-scaling DVD player technology but was persuaded after reading an article in "What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision" magazine. Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied. On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging.
