...the BMW 320d and the Audi A4 1.8 tdi cant offer! The internal styling of the C-class is unfortunately not as exceptional as its fuel economy. The boring fake wood and neverending dark leather and plastic does not harmonise with the beautifully curved exterior body, and many friends have commented on how dissapointinly unluxurious the interior is. I do believe this is mercedes' downfall when comparing it with Audi and BMW! The C220 cdi will set you back about £20000 on the road if you bought a new one today. However a second hand 2000 model would cost about £13000 with about 30000miles. This shows the excellent depreciation value that mercedes' have, and when your spending £20000 on a car its all important. Another aspect when considering price is the spare parts cost. Baby Benz

Advantages: it's small
Disadvantages: it's small!

...seat belt does not pass itself around the childs neck, it sits correctly on their shoulder. It's suitable for children from about 9Kg upwards. The only downside (as it is just a height booster) is if they sleep they do not have the support a normal child seat has - which can recline with head support to prevent their head moving too much when you are cornering. Functionality wise it has the usual power steering, air con, CD radio, remote mirrors, alarm immobiliser, alloys, rev counter, airbags etc. I read somewhere that Benz reckon that the A class has similar levels of crash protection to a C Class (old model). The reception from my local dealer is pretty lukewarm, (perhaps I need to wear a suit) anyway, out of the dealers I have visited Mercedes, BMW, Audi, - Mercedes come bottom. Audi top. MERCEDES C220 CDI HAS FLARE AND COMES ABOVE AVERAGE

Advantages: SMOOTH RIDE, HANDLES WELL , PRESTIGE BADGE
Disadvantages: NIGGLES CAN BE EXPENSIVE ,BUY THE FACELIFT MODEL

...about it although every other Taxi is fast becoming a Mercedes diesel.!! The car never surprised me on speed off the mark but from 70 onward it did seem too fly with ease.Once I had started the engine from cold and woke the street up with the "clack-clack" it did please me ,as when warmed up and at normal Motorway speeds it went along qiutely without having to have the radio / cd up too loud. The finish of these vehicles is very good with soft plastics and Leather being used and the wind noise is very negligable at any speed. I did find the seats a little unsupportive and I wish I had gone for heated seats on the more cold winter mornings as the heater took an age to get up too a warm blow. The economy with the Diesel engine and Automatic gears seemed ok on long journeys but I saw a difference of MPG when you go over 65mph in comparison...

...It may seem a strange time to write a review about the original Mercedes A Class considering that the revised model is now available. However, I guess there's still a good second hand market for the original A Class, so if you're thinking of buying one now, this is for you. I'd always wanted an A Class since they first came out. The shape just appealed to me, and I imagined that as it was a Mercedes this would be a quality car. My model is a year 2000, A140 Classic. I live in Europe where attitudes to Mercedes products are less reverential and have had a manual transmission E220 CDi since Oct.2003 (which I'd like to sell). This model with 150 bhp/340nm. has effectively been superceded since July 2006 by a revised model with 170bhp and approx 400nm. and which among some 2000 changes has done away with the brake by wire system and probably other curiosities as well.
