FREE DVDs

Advantages: Free trial, large choice, post included, new realeases
Disadvantages: see review

...I like movies and I like freebies, so when you get offered both in one swoop you?re bound to accept! I used my two week free trial with this company and remained with them for a couple of monthsbefore moving on to try many other companies free trials (and winning a new DVD player on Tesco DVD rental site on their free trial offer). I then had an email from DVDs 365 asking me to go back, and offering me a free DVD if I did so. I had just left Tesco (with my new DVD player) so I chose to go back with them. ∆◊◊ THE SERVICE THEY OFFER ∆◊◊ Basically it?s like going to a video shop and hiring films on DVD, except you don?t pay for each film you chose ? rather a monthly fee for which you can watch as many movies as you can fit in, for us this is usually around 8 a month (2 a week usually weekends...

Competent, Compelling & Fun (The Innocent Mage - Karen Miller)

Advantages: fun, easy to read, competent, compelling
Disadvantages: shallow and derivative

...with the fantasy archetype, to fulfil his destiny. The Circle, a secret cabal devoted to preserving the old and forgotten Olken magic is watching and gently guiding him, as only he will have a chance of saving Lur when the Wall crumbles in the Final Days. The Innocent Mage, part one of the Kingmaker, Kingbreaker dylogy is an example of a traditional sword and sorcery fantasy which is known as a rather derivative genre, and the skill here lies not necessarily in producing something of startling originality but in using the known tropes in a way that will make for a satisfying, compelling tale that holds together and manages to maximise the page count (and thus the time of entertainment it provides) while maintaining interest and, ideally, leaving the reader asking for more at the end. The Innocent Mage does all that admirably: Karen Miller uses...

Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54

Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.

...At first I wasn't convinced by up-scaling DVD player technology but was persuaded after reading an article in "What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision" magazine. Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied. On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. All the components such as cables, remote and manuals were well presented in their own protective plastic bags, to keep them protected. The player...

Bring On The Cliches: Part 2

Advantages: Formula for a typical teen comedy...
Disadvantages: ...just like all the others

...There are some well-known favourites that crop up in just about any movie (e.g. as soon as people end up in the water, there?ll be a waterfall ? or perhaps a shark). In fact, there are way too many clichés for any single list. Inspired by a checklist I compiled whilst watching Bring It On (companion review: http://www.ciao.co.uk/BringItOnReview5481235) here?s my list of ten from American Pie-style teen comedies. (Most of these would also apply to teen horrors, e.g. I Know What You Did Last Summer) [1] Outsider that doesn?t quite fit in (preferably a newcomer) There?ll be someone who?s disabled/foreign/black/a Star Trek enthusiast/gay/the child of Satan and who doesn?t fit in with the ?cool? school/college kids. In Bring It On it?s Missy ? the pseudo-goth gymnast who hates the happy-clappy style of the cheerleaders...

Manchester Karen Millen

Advantages: Classy with a capital C, items for all occasions, easy to find an outfit or separates, staff are helpful
Disadvantages: expensive, sizes irregular, fragile

...I am officially impressed. In Manchester (my almost local retail paradise) there are now 3 stores, one in the-triangle centre, on in Selfridges at the Trafford Centre and the main outlet on King Street. I only started visiting the Karen Millen stores this Christmas after a friend of mine purchased a stunning dress for half price in their January sale - lucky one off you may think, but this is not the case. KM holds regular sales (not sure when exactly but there is one on now!!!)and each time there is stock reduced by up to 50%. The clothing sold ranges from basic jumpers and vest tops (similar items can be found in the gap, 1/3 of the price but you can tell these are of better quality and material) to full on party regalia so there is bound to be something suitable and stunning, and more often than not, many more items you will fall...

Ten movie cliches to make you groan

Advantages: Not many
Disadvantages: Oh no not again!

...Films are full of cliches some of which are funny, some stupid and some bloody annoying. Many of them make you groan at the idiocy of the filmmaker, and others are integral to the film and without them we?d all complain. So here is a list of some of my favourite clichés in films: Bathroom cabinet ^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^ This is a classic scene in many horror films or thrillers in which the protagonist is in the bathroom looking in the bathroom cabinet for something or they are bending down to wash their face in the sink. When they slowly rise up to look at their reflection in the mirror or to close the cabinet door the bad guy/monster/creature/ex-husband/crazed killer is there looking at her/him. D?oh! This theory should be put into place for any lost children, pets, or pens ? just go up to the magic mirror, look in it and it...

End of cliche

Advantages: Good relaxing album
Disadvantages: Not as hard as some would expect

..."At the end of the cliche" is the debut album from Carl Cox. Previously he has released many mix compilations and vinyl dance tracks. This album dispels cliche ridden preconceptions about what his music is all about. It is a much more relaxing slower paced album than his live DJ sets. The same excellence is there in his DJ'ing as in his producing, although the styles are quite different. The album is a very good chill-out album, but not what some people would expect from Carl Cox. It contains the two top 40 singles Phoebus Apollo and Sensual Sophis-ti-cat....

Cliched and Repetitive

Advantages: Generally good , some good presenters
Disadvantages: Repetitive

...little to what has been described. The problem often is that the reporters contribution is very formatted and cliched. For example reporters sent to update a house explosion will always speak of ‘neighbours hearing a loud bang?. Regrettably there is too often an inappropriate breathless manner in the reporting with reporters excitedly almost gleefully reporting on incidents where more tact is required. This is particularly apparent at Britain?s all too frequent rail disasters where reporters recently have described scenes as being ‘amazing? and ‘incredible?. Political reporting too is often Often in the run-up to the news Radio 5 will use an item from the morning papers and have the main character from it for an interview. I recall a recent one where the mother of a 2-year old who was banned from a pub because...
