...In my opinion Kate Winslet deservedly claimed the best actress Oscar for her role in 'The Reader', and her acceptance speech was as inspiring as her perfomance as the mysterious Hanna Schmitz. She profoundly accepted the award with such sincerity and humbleness that I found myself proud to be of similar roots to this English rose. I was spared the forced gratitude of her american predecessors, where tears were shed for show, and thanks were offered with theatric overtones. Instead I was greeted with the genuine gratefulness of an established moviestar that stripped herself of celebrity status to find her father in the crowd, where she found her glory in his proudness. Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54

Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.

...At first I wasn't convinced by up-scaling DVD player technology but was persuaded after reading an article in "What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision" magazine. Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied. On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. Forever Kate

Advantages: creative, idiosyncratic, unique
Disadvantages: two or three of duff tracks depending on your opinion

...Never for Ever was released in 1980. It was Kate Bush's third album and made her the first female singer to top the British album charts. It differs greatly from the two that preceeded it; the sublimely romantic 'The Kick Inside' and the mellow 'Lionheart'. In 'Never for Ever' Kate worked on the production and it shows, as she begins to express herself in new and experimental ways, using her voice as an instrument, as well as making use of various sound effects and samples. She also moves towards using electronic music and away from concentrating on the piano. This album has some aggression that paves the way for what is to come in 'The Dreaming', which followed two years later and which is actually hated by some fans who love her other work. I love both of these albums and wonder if the lack of popularity of her more manic recordings is...

Lionheart-Kate Bush

Advantages: Fierce,delicate,enchantin g.All that Kate Bush is loved and admired for encapsulated in this album
Disadvantages: You stare at the cover hating youself for not looking as sexy as she does!

...Lionheart (1978) is really a beautiful addition the Kate Bush collection. The sexy album cover and lyrics like 'the more that I think of sex the better it gets' hints at the real bravery buried in this album. It's no suprise with songs like "Oh England My Lionheart", that this album did really well in England and not so well in the US. Kate Bush's vocals really do leap and dance around the music in this enchanting album. But dont be fooled by her butterfly like delicate voice, for lurking deep inside Kate is a woman who throws out lyrics heavy with ferocity like 'he's too busy hitting the vaseline' in the brilliant song WOW! This album really is amazing to listen to as its so intricate and detailed with surprises and points of interest lurking in every crevice of itself. You could really keep listening to it over and over...

...After the emotional but often musically lackluster The Red Shoes album way back in 1993, Kate took time off to do her own thing, including starting a family. She briefly popped into the studio in 1996 to knock the single King of The Mountain into shape, but nothing further happened for many more years. Having long since given up any expectation of seeing another Kate Bush album, I was somewhat surprised back in the summer of 2005, when it was announced that a new album was soon to be on its way.
