FREE DVDs

Advantages: Free trial, large choice, post included, new realeases
Disadvantages: see review

...I like movies and I like freebies, so when you get offered both in one swoop you?re bound to accept! I used my two week free trial with this company and remained with them for a couple of monthsbefore moving on to try many other companies free trials (and winning a new DVD player on Tesco DVD rental site on their free trial offer). I then had an email from DVDs 365 asking me to go back, and offering me a free DVD if I did so. I had just left Tesco (with my new DVD player) so I chose to go back with them. ∆◊◊ THE SERVICE THEY OFFER ∆◊◊ Basically it?s like going to a video shop and hiring films on DVD, except you don?t pay for each film you chose ? rather a monthly fee for which you can watch as many movies as you can fit in, for us this is usually around 8 a month (2 a week usually weekends...

Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54

Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.

...At first I wasn't convinced by up-scaling DVD player technology but was persuaded after reading an article in "What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision" magazine. Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied. On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. All the components such as cables, remote and manuals were well presented in their own protective plastic bags, to keep them protected. The player...

The Red And The Black - Jerry Harrison

Advantages: the funky pop of Talking Heads combined with some killer tunes
Disadvantages: why isn't this album better known?

...If you love mid period Talking Heads then you'll love this 1981 solo album from Heads keyboard player Jerry Harrison. Keeping the multilayered polyrhythms of Remain In Light and adding an outright funky sheen Jerry created the best Talking Heads album that the band never made. Assisted by keyboard wizard Bernie Worrell, guitarist Adrian Belew and singer Nona Hendryx (all of whom had graced the expanded touring line up of the Heads during 1980) Jerry's style of music is pure funky pop. The album was originally going to be broadly instrumental with Hendryx and Dolette Macdonald adding wordless singing. But Jerry was persuaded by the others that he could sing so the tunes became songs. Jerry's lyrics are curious, often offering gentle advice about life the universe and everything in oddly simplistic verses. But the tunes are mighty...

Harrisons Cave, Barbados

Advantages: Well explained, interesting, something for all the family
Disadvantages: Not that easy to find

...Harrison's caves are in the parish of St. Thomas they are quite difficult to find due to the fact that in Barbados they feel it is only necessary to put up a sign post every so often. Meaning that you will have come to several turn offs and junctions and not have a clue which way to go, its pot luck really!!! An island map is essential in this country! But as for the caves when you get there, they are fantastic, they are truly beautiful. The tours are well organised and regular. The tour guides are well informed and the whole experience was delightful and a must for families. You really won't believe your eyes when you see the stalactites, stalagmites, streams, lakes and underground waterfalls, its like being in an enchanted fairy tale world. As your looking at the amazing wonders before your eyes it is difficult to believe that...

A gold medal and wasted potential

Advantages: Size and Gold medal
Disadvantages: ...scared

..."With Hindsight-The Audley Harrison Career" By Scott Graveson With the Olympics fast approaching, and Frankie Gavin's dissapointment with the scales, lets remember out last big man to win the Gold Medal, the "Great A Farce" Audley Harrison. Roll your minds back to 2000, Sydney in fact you were probably sleeping, I know as Audley beat Mukhtarkhan Dildabekov (of Kazakhstan) 30-16 in the final of the boxing at the highest weight (Super heavyweight, 91 KG+). On his way to the final Audley had beaten: Defeated Alexei Lezin (Russia) TKO 4 Defeated Alexey Mazikin (Ukraine) points Defeated Paolo Vidoz (Italy) points Of those: Lezin never turned pro Mazikin did turned pro but never acheived anything of note Vidoz went pro and claimed the EBU title, and is still fighting around the European level. and it would seem Dildabekov didn...

Review of Audley Harrison

One family's ordeal during the dreadful Salem witch trials.

Advantages: A well researched read, and something I could not put down.
Disadvantages: Half way through the book when you momentarily jump in time.

...apparent. One day though her Father comes to take her back to her family in Andover, against the deep wishes of Sarah, who would long to stay with her Aunt's family. The book continues with Sarah and her family, with some quite ordinary day-to-day events, however the book is great to read and I did find it very interesting to read how life could have been back then (in my opinion, very boring and very cold!). The author, Kathleen Kent, has done a great job of describing how cold the winters were, struggling to keep warm using straw, to the point where it made me feel quite cold and wanting to cuddle up underneath a warm blanket! Kent also described just how warm and uncomfortable the summer is when working in the fields wonderfully, along with how exhausting it must have been harvesting those fields by hand. You read about Sarah growing...

Love Story

Advantages: Well written and thought out love story
Disadvantages: Bit short needed an extra twist or two

.... Usually I read crime or suspense thrillers so this was quite a new challenge for me. I think the fundamental reason for this was it was a good very well told story with characters that where likeable and easy to relate to. This is not my first experience of Sarah Harrison?s work a few months ago I read ? The Next Room? which I also found a good read, although that lacked the love story this one had, it was more of a suspense mystery. Unusually this novel was written 30 years ago, but only published in 2002. This is one of 28 novels written by this talented British storyteller. It was in my opinion set in a more innocent time, one in which people when they married they stayed married until they died. It was actually good to see in arguabably a more romantic time the importance of letters from loved ones, as apposed to e-mails or text...

Review of The Divided Heart - Sarah Harrison

Passes with a very high mark

Advantages: Explores the murkier side of the alt-country experience
Disadvantages: May be too depressing for some in places

...If I had to ever think of a Canadian alt-country version of Liz Phair, I'd probably come up with Kathleen Edwards. Whilst she's nowhere near the kind of 'sweary-mary' that Liz Phair is, nor do her track titles evoke blushes if your parents happen to read them, she does come close to the borders of respectability. "Failer", her debut album released in 2003, is raw, edgy and earthy yet surprisingly good, telling tales of screwed-up people from back-roads Canada - well, at least the ones skipped over by those responsible for the glossy tourist brochures.... Kathleen Edwards might not set the world alight with her vocals judging by the first few tracks - you could even say they're rather depressing at times, but with a title like "Failer", depressing is pretty much apt and in keeping with the subject matter. Yet they've got a curious...

What a Tease

Advantages: Good characters, fun story, well written
Disadvantages: Crude in places (for me anyway!)

...characters also, as I found no immediately following chapters followed the same characters. It is well-written, witty and funny to read and thoroughly enjoyable. I also found that this being written in the third-person made it easier to read, given the scope of characters, first person would have been just too confusing! Again though I must point out excessive, and unnecessary use of, in my opinion, the most awful word in the English language, the C-Word. I don't think it is nice, it didn't add anything to the book and seemed out of place coming from the mouths of these well-off characters. It is actually this which has caused the book to lose 1 star from me, as if she had not written in this way, it would most certainly warrant 5 stars from me! So overall, I think this is a very good introduction into the works of Kathleen Tessaro if you...

Review of The Flirt - Kathleen Tessaro

Elegant on the cover, ugly inside

Advantages: Good cover, interesting excerpts from another book
Disadvantages: Not funny, unsympathetic main character and lots of stereotypes

...Louise is dull as dishwater. As for the supporting characters, the author of the book (Kathleen Tessaro) relies on lazy, ill-drawn stereotypes: the gay best friend, the evil mother-in-law, and the posh country-types who she works with. Yawnsville! Another reason why you should not buy this book is that it is not funny. Not once did I laugh while reading this book. It didn?t even bring a knowing smile to my face. In fact, it was more likely to make me feel like bashing it with frustration at the main character?s annoying ways. While reading this book, I couldn?t help wonder about the author, Katherine Tissot, and how much of this was autobiographical. Like the main character, Louise, Kathleen also comes from Pittsburgh and is an American woman in London. Her descriptions of London life feel false, and I would not be...
