FREE DVDs
Advantages: Free trial, large choice, post included, new realeases
Disadvantages: see review
...I like movies and I like freebies, so when you get offered both in one swoop you?re bound to accept! I used my two week free trial with this company and remained with them for a couple of monthsbefore moving on to try many other companies free trials (and winning a new DVD player on Tesco DVD rental site on their free trial offer). I then had an email from DVDs 365 asking me to go back, and offering me a free DVD if I did so. I had just left Tesco (with my new DVD player) so I chose to go back with them.
∆◊◊ THE SERVICE THEY OFFER ∆◊◊
Basically it?s like going to a video shop and hiring films on DVD, except you don?t pay for each film you chose ? rather a monthly fee for which you can watch as many movies as you can fit in, for us this is usually around 8 a month (2 a week usually weekends...

Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54
Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.
...At first I wasn't convinced by up-scaling DVD player technology but was persuaded after reading an article in "What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision" magazine. Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied.
On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. All the components such as cables, remote and manuals were well presented in their own protective plastic bags, to keep them protected. The player...

Without originality
Advantages: A strong story with enough twists to make it worthwhile
Disadvantages: Lack of originality
...by Willard's lawyer, Anya starts to make her own investigation into the death of Eileen Randall and, finding some worrying discrepancies, the case against Geoffrey Willard starts to look decidedly weak. But why is the blood of one of the recent victims found on Willard's clothing and why was he seen hunched over the lifeless body of Eileen Randall on that night all those years ago?
"Without Consent" is Kathryn Fox's second novel, the follow up to "Malicious Intent" which also features Anya Crichton. The author is a GP with an interest in forensic crime detection so comes from a similar background to similar crime novelists Patricia Cornwell and Kathy Reichs. "Without Consent" is very similar to the early Scarpetta novels with a heavy focus on the use of forensics to convict or absolve the suspects.
One difference is that...

The binding chair... not a bind to read at all.
Advantages: An incite into an unknown world.
Disadvantages: Sometimes a little uncomfortable to read.
...On one of my many, many trips to my local library I was thrilled to discover that there was another book sale, unfortunately the books on sale were not of the usual reading material that I go for, hence the review I will now write.
The book I will now review is ? The binding chair by Kathryn Harrison?
As I stated earlier this is not the sort of book I would normally go for, more of a semi fictional history book this only appealed in the fact that it was A, on sale for 20p, and B, I liked the cover! (Sorry I am so shallow!).
The cover doesn?t really give much indication as to what the book is about, aside from the fact that the binding chair in question is the piece of apparatus that Chinese girls sat in to have there feet bound. Not being that knowledgeable on the subject of Chinese history or the barbaric traditions behind...

Quick! Run! He's got a spoon!!!
Advantages: Easy to understand and follow
Disadvantages: Nothing especially insightful, interesting or thrilling to be found herein
...I hadn't even heard of Kathryn Fox until I spotted her latest release "Skin and Bone" on the shelves in my local Tesco, though it would seem that this is in fact her third novel to date. I'd taken a stroll down to Tesco to use up some coupons in all honesty, one of which offered me a large amount of clubcard points in return for an £8 spend on books. "Great" I thought "I've been looking for an excuse to buy some new books for ages".
Skin and Bones caught my eye quickly because of its eye-catching thriller cover featuring the title "Skin and Bone" in raised ink that looks like dried blood complete with two embossed bloody bones crossed underneath it. "Fox is stomach-churningly good" claims the Mail on Sunday right there on the front cover. Must be a good read I thought as I flipped the book over to read the blurb:
"The corpse...

The breakup of a modern marriage!
Advantages: thought provoking and honest writing
Disadvantages: a bit sad
...Kathryn Flett is a journalist, TV critic and has appeared in the BBC series Grumpy Old Woman. In 1999 she wrote her only book to date - The Heart Shaped Bullet - which is not really a novel as it depicts the true events surrounding the break up of her marriage. As you can imagine it is a poignant and at times heart breaking read but I assume it must have also been pretty cathartic for her to write everything down. In fact, as it emerges in the book, she started by writing about her break up in her Observer column virtually as it was happening.
The book tells of Kathryn's and Eric's courtship, marriage, separation and how she dealt with all of this which does not always make easy reading. They married in September 1995 in a registry office followed by a church blessing which was due to Eric already being a divorcee. They seemed happy...

Suitable for Nut Allergy sufferers!
Advantages: Very fun story, great activities
Disadvantages: None
...with a different aspect of reading. My 6 year old did find these quite easy but he did enjoy doing them and did even think about it as work. To him it was just great fun!
The book was written by Kathryn White and illustrated by Vanessa Cabban. It was published by Little Tiger Press. The retail price on the back of the book is £4.99 but I managed to get this book brand new from EBay for £2.49 which I feel is a great price.
I do highly recommend this book for all parents trying to encourage independent reading and the added activities also help with the learning process. I will definitely be looking out for some more books in the Ready Steady Read collection.
I am reviewing the hard back edition of this book and not the audio as CIao have listed it....

A great guide to artistic folk.
Advantages: Great tracks prefomed by Kathryn and some great musicans.
Disadvantages: A few weird tracks which require some knowledge.
...Since moving to Newcastle upon Tyne to study at university, I did some research into pipers and musicians in the area and came across Kathryn Tickell, a name in which i had heard but hadn't really listened to, so i decided to go out and try to get a cd of hers from the local music shop which had none in stock. Later when i was shopping on the high street in which to my surprise, came across some of her cds in HMV and i decided to buy 'Strange but true'.
Kathryn Tickell is a Northumbrian Piper, Fiddler and composer from Northumberland. Her work is deeply connected to the landscape and people of Northumbria, in particular the North Tyne Valley where many of her relatives still play traditional music. As well as composing her own music she has collaborated with artists as diverse as Sting, Andy Sheppard and Sir Peter Maxwell Davies...

We've all got dragons
Advantages: Everything
Disadvantages: Try and find some, I dare you
...Yes, I do apologise profusely, I've regressed to being a child again, which is why I'm reviewing a book aimed at 6 year olds! Or it could be because I needed a present for my younger foster brother...the first idea is more interesting, I'll stick with that! Either way, whichever one you chose to believe, this is a children's book that I was well impressed with.
Boring Stuff
Title: You've Got Dragons
Author: Kathryn Cave, Nick Maland
Publisher: Hodder Children's Books, 2002
Price: £4.99 supposedly, but £12.99 on Amazon
ISBN: 0-340-85158-9
The text is done by Kathryn Cave and the illustrations by Nick Maland
Age Range
Although the book is aimed at an age range of about 6 years old, it can be used for just about any age group, including adults (that was more to make myself feel better!). The younger the child, the less they...
