I loved the smell of the place as a kid and loved the rough and readiness of the shop which was just a farm building with barrels in and a little counter with a till. It was always a bit exciting going to Thatcher?s because it was all part of the getting ready to party routine. Even as a small kid we would be given a tiny taster of sweet cider straight from the barrel and then be a little tipsy and giggly on the ride home. A very early Holmes adventure on the movie screen

Advantages: It is Sherlock Holmes!
Disadvantages: Dated and a bit theatrical

...In the world of Sherlock Holmes there are two very well known screen portrayals of Conan Doyle?s immortal detective. Jeremy Brett on the TV screen in the 80?s and 90?s and Basil Rathbone on the cinema screen in the 40?s. There have been many other versions of the character in both formats but most of them are lesser versions, unable to match the style and quality of these two. Before even Rathbone played Holmes though there was a British series of Holmes films starring one Arthur Wontner. The Triumph of Sherlock Holmes was made in 1935 and is one of five Holmes films made in the thirties starring Wontner. One of these is lost forever, a second is rarely seen but the other three are all available on DVD very cheaply. ...My wife and I stayed at Holm house in July 2008 for our wedding anniversary. It was a fantastic, long weekend of indulgence and luxury. The emphasis is most definitely on quality. At roughly midnight on the evening before we arrived, I remembered that I hadn't ordered any flowers for my better half. An e-mail and 10 minutes later, and job done. A member of staff had returned my e-mail and informed me he would personally get some flowers when the florist opened in the morning. Holm house is located in Marine Parade in Penarth. It's a quirky 12 room luxury spa/boutique, built in the 1920's with new found wealth. In fact most of the properties along Marine Parade look like they were built for the very wealthy.
