Keighley Worth Valley Railway worth the visit!

Advantages: Wonderful periodic stations and rolling stock
Disadvantages: Is fairly short if you don't use the rover ticket option.

...Keighley & Worth Valley Railway is well worth the visit! In the heart of Bronte country is a small but lovely steam railway line, known as the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway. Despite its size and the area it runs through it is best known as the part of the filming location for the film The Railway Children. Although it operates mostly steam trains, it does also on occasion run diesel trains often used by the locals going into Keighley! As such there is a good concession rate if you do live within a certain postcode area, so it is worth checking up on. However, we visited as tourists, using Oxenhope as our destination station (you can have a round trip using any one of the main stations). Once we arrived we had some time to spare so went to have a look at some carriages and other rolling stock in a barn set off from the main...

Review of Keighley & Worth Valley Railway

Keighley is Gateway to the Brontes

Advantages: Plenty to do
Disadvantages: no department stores

...Keighley, is a small Industrial Town in West Yorkshire. The famous "Worth Valley Railway starts here and calls at: Ingrow West, Damems, Oakworth (Railway Children filmed here.) Haworth (Where Bronte Sister's lived) and Oxenhope. The line is about 8 miles long and both steam and diesel trains run on it.The views from the train are really beautiful. Cliffe Castle Museum is an interesting place to vist.It has a collection of stuffed birds and animals. There are are painting and exhibitions to see too!! East Riddlesden Hall, situated on the outskirts is said to be an haunted ancient house. The ground are medival and in summer there are exhibitions and displays of life back then. The shopping centres provide a mixture of Specialist and modern types of shops. The Town itself is at the bottom of a valley. It is surrounded by...

"All Aboard!"

Advantages: A great day out for all the family
Disadvantages: Parking charge at Haworth station

...It was my mam?s 50th birthday at the end of last month so my parents and I decided to go away for a long weekend, with my sister and her children. My eldest nephew loves trains and has done since a very young age and as my other nephew and my niece like trains too we thought visiting Keighley & Worth Valley Railway would be something that would keep the children entertained. If the children are happy my mam is happy. We were staying in Shipley, West Yorkshire and we travelled to the railway by car. "What is it?" Keighley & Worth Valley Railway is Britain?s last remaining complete heritage branch line which runs from Keighley to Oxenhope, West Yorkshire. All the stations along the line are old style and some of them have been used in films and TV. All the staff that work on the railway are trained volunteers. "~Our...

Take The steam train to the Brontes

Advantages: great scenery
Disadvantages: too short !

...Anyone who finds themselves with a couple of hours to spare in Northern England should consider an afternoon on the steam railway that is the Keighley & Worth valley line. This is a preserved steam route in West Yorkshire that used to form part of the national rail network until the 1960s , when that mad axeman Dr Beeching butchered the rural British train network. The line is only five miles in length but is in the heart of Bronte country. The line first opened in 1867 as trains rain from Keighley (the main terminus ) through to Oxenhope which is the end of the line. Today under the ownership of the Keighley & Worth Valley the same route still exists ,and it is a tribute to this hardy bunch of people that the route runs at all. The trains are mainly steam hauled although the early services tend to be run by a diesel railcar...

Railway Children

Advantages: A step back in time!
Disadvantages: It is a little short...but it doesnt have to be!

...and sociability that is hard to find these days. You will find yourself chatting to the guard or any of the ticket inspectors up and down on the train. Even when you go in to the refreshement rooms eg at Oxenhope or on the platform at Keighley you receive intimate and friendly service. I am not going to go into detail regarding the journeys up and down the line [albeit a short 5 mile trip] as I believe another author has covered that well. Suffice to say the scenery is lovely and one can relate to the railway children film scenery and also to recognise some of the scenes that you may have seen in Sherlock Holmes adventures [Keighley railway station ] amongst others. The staff do go out of their way to make it special and if you have children I recommend the Christmas Specials that KWVR run annually although even if you do not have children the run...

Always on form

Advantages: Experience by the bucket
Disadvantages: More selected ranges

...This better not increase trade or Danny might actually have to get off his arse. Robin Nolans if you live local to keighley you’ll have heard of aire valley and all terrail cycles, but then theres nolans. What makes it special then well well well.. Most cycle shops are run (be honest) by young lads whole rightfully run good up to date bike shops they stock all the best kit, branded and there own. But ‘after sale support’ even from a specialist bike shop (ie. Not Halfords) can still be poor. Who wants to loose there new bike for weeks while they try to figure out what’s making that noise and what they need to fix it and how much it costs. You’ll meet Robin I’m sure if you wander in, he’s probably the one in the long blue lab coat thing. Trust everything he says he’s ridden for years if he...

Scandal

Advantages: None
Disadvantages: The game is going down the pan for small clubs

...Rugby League has lost all touch with reality. How can the Northern Ford Premiership teams build for a long term future when they are denied promotion to the Super League ? The whole thing is a joke .The top and bottom of the situation is that the top bosses of Super League ( who keep resigning ) do not want smaller towns such as Keighley , Dewsbury etc in their so called glamarous competition. They obviously feel this will lower the tone and not impress their paymasters which are Sky Television . The game should remember it's roots and why it broke away from Rugby Union in the first place ....

IT REALLY IS GOLDEN BEST

Advantages: Nice and Refreshing
Disadvantages: None

...~~~~~~~ TIMOTHY TAYLOR'S - GOLDEN BEST ~~~~~~~ Timothy Taylor started brewing his own beer back in 1858 in small town called Keighley in West Yorkshire his brewing factory still remains there today. Timothy Taylor have won many awards for their real ales and beers but not surprising as they use their own natural ingredients - I bet the secret is the spring water they use from the Pennines on the Knowle Spring. There's a lot of competition out there and for a company who has been going for over 100 years and still going strong is there any wonder that the company is still thriving today. Great to drink on a nice day while watching the Bronte Country scenery go by on the steam train on the Keighley Worth Valley - You must all know that's where the Railway Children was filmed and Haworth is the home of the Bronte Sisters...

Farmers markets

Advantages: great fresh veg!
Disadvantages:

...Chapel market has a regular farmers market which is brilliant if you want to buy a wide range of fresh stuff straight from the producers. Farmers markets are a relatively new idea here in the Uk -yep another US import! No they arent just full of farmers selling freshly dug veg. It can be literally anything as long as its produced in a small radius of the markets location. There fore you can buy Freshly baked bread, cakes, jams and of course Veg. Some sell organic produce as well but even if its not organic its definetly fresher than what you buy in the supermarkets! Farmers markets are not just a London thing If you live in west Yorkshire there's a regular one in Holmfirth, Keighley and Bradford. I can definetly recommend the Holmfirth one its a smallish market but then afterwards you can always have a look round Holmfirth. I've been...
