Replay - Ken Grimwood

Advantages: A moving story that can be read again and again
Disadvantages: None

...Replay by Ken Grimwood is my all time favourite novel. It begins with the death of the main character in the book, a guy by the name of Jeff Winston, a 42-year-old newsreader for a local radio station. On the 18th October 1988 at 1.06pm Jeff suffers a heart attack whilst sitting at his desk on the phone to his wife. This rather odd start to this novel takes a dramatic turn when Jeff wakes up again in bed. Realising that he hasn't died after all he looks around at his surroundings, which look oddly familiar. There's an old song playing on the radio and a poster on the wall that Jeff recognises as being similar to one that he'd bought when he was at college. It's at this point that it dawns on him that he is in fact in the same room that he stayed in at college. His immediate thoughts are that this must be some extremely elaborate...

FREE DVDs

Advantages: Free trial, large choice, post included, new realeases
Disadvantages: see review

...I like movies and I like freebies, so when you get offered both in one swoop you?re bound to accept! I used my two week free trial with this company and remained with them for a couple of monthsbefore moving on to try many other companies free trials (and winning a new DVD player on Tesco DVD rental site on their free trial offer). I then had an email from DVDs 365 asking me to go back, and offering me a free DVD if I did so. I had just left Tesco (with my new DVD player) so I chose to go back with them. ∆◊◊ THE SERVICE THEY OFFER ∆◊◊ Basically it?s like going to a video shop and hiring films on DVD, except you don?t pay for each film you chose ? rather a monthly fee for which you can watch as many movies as you can fit in, for us this is usually around 8 a month (2 a week usually weekends...

Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54

Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.

...At first I wasn't convinced by up-scaling DVD player technology but was persuaded after reading an article in "What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision" magazine. Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied. On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. All the components such as cables, remote and manuals were well presented in their own protective plastic bags, to keep them protected. The player...

"Passing the PRINCE2 Exam - Ken Bradley"

Advantages: None
Disadvantages: It's very pricey

...I was very anxious reading this "Passing the PRINCE2 Exam - Ken Bradley" when i ordered it. But it was very disappointing when i recieved it. I discovered that it was not worth that price at all because of its contents. May be you like to know that, it only contains one sample question on both the foundation and practitioner exam. To be honest, this cannot make you pass either of the aforementioned exam. I only bought it, thinking it's full of various sample questions, unknowlingly it's just one sample question for both exam as i've mentioned. In my own opinion and from what i've experienced, you don't need this book. Just practice using various online sample questions after you've read the "Managing Successful Projects with PRINCE2" text book. Then you should be fine. Or better still, if you can get the software which contains numerous...

The Eye of The Needle

Advantages: Fast moving crime thriller
Disadvantages: None!

...Review of The Eye of The Needle, a novel by Ken Follett ---The Book--- The Eye of the Needle is the best selling novel from the pen of author Ken Follett. The novel was written in 1977 and became an international best seller. Ken Follett had written other novels, but The Eye of The Needle was his first major success. I am reviewing the paperback edition of the book, ISBN 78-0330354295. Cover price £7.99. The cover depicts the rear view of a man watching a remote house, silhouetted against a stormy sky. The cover is enigmatic and mysterious, that in conjunction with the jacket blurb and knowledge of another novel by the author, is what encouraged me to buy the novel. ---The Plot--- The Eye of The Needle is a gripping crime mystery, set during the second world war. The storyline takes us through the exploits...

Whiteout

Advantages: Easy reading,exciting,good book.
Disadvantages: None

...About the author Ken Follett was born in Cardiff, Wales, on the 5th of June, 1949. Throughout his career as a journalist, Ken worked as a general reporter and later on he wrote his first book Eye of the Needle in 1978.Now he has written about 20 thrillers and his books are translated to around 30 languages and are being sold world wide. Whiteout is one of his most successful books. About the book The book is about a secret laboratory that's been robbed and a deadly virus has been stolen. The scientist that was creating the vaccine for the deadly virus was found dead. And in the book you read how the people are trying to catch the thieves who stole the virus before they give it to someone or use it.But when the thieves try to run a terrible snowstorm strikes the city and they cant drive with the car and they have to find...

Review of Whiteout - Ken Follett

Sorry when the end came

Advantages: Totally absorbing.
Disadvantages: The size of the book makes your arm ache!

...is Ken Follett? I?ve no idea, but he is a man who intrigues me. While he writes about sex and violence with apparent abandon, he is obviously someone with a huge sense of justice. Some of the bad people in his books are truly shocking, while his good characters make you feel there is still hope for the human race. He also creates intelligent and feisty women who make an impact on their world at a time when women were seen as inferior to men and treated as goods and chattels. I like to think that maybe there truly were a few ?Follett women? around at this time. One thing is for sure ? it makes you truly thankful not to have lived in the 14th century!...

Review of World Without End - Ken Follett

Learning the world, one review at a time...

Advantages: Brilliant depiction of alien society
Disadvantages: Ho hum sunliner full of augmented humans

...Ever since H G Wells wrote War of the Worlds and described the Martians ruthlessly zapping the Home Counties, we've seen countless visions of how we might react to learning we're not alone in the universe. From government cover-ups and conspiracies to all-out interplanetary war, aliens coming to visit is a science-fiction staple. Learning the World - a novel of first contact In Ken MacLeod's Learning the World, however, humanity has a long way to go before meeting new life. MacLeod suggests a universe so vast that humans conquer space travel and colonise vast numbers of star systems before finally encountering intelligent life. In this novel, we are the invaders. And most of the ship's crew has a different opinion on how to go about things. Aboard the sunliner 'But the Sky, My Lady! The Sky!', it's clear that a lot...

A True Pillar of Twelfth-Century Society?

Advantages: Good hisorical detail
Disadvantages: Too long, villains a bit pantomime, didn't always feel believable

...After reading several recommendations of "The Pillars of the Earth" I thought that I would pick it up when I saw it in the library recently. All I knew about it was that it was about the building of a cathedral in twelfth-century England and that it was long. Having never read Ken Follett before I had no preconceptions about his writing style and didn't know what to expect. This book was written in 1989 and went on to become Follett's best-selling work. It was listed no. 33 out of 200 books in the BBC's "Big Read" in 2003, which was a survey looking for the nation's most popular books. The book begins with a short prologue about a hanging in 1123 - obviously this scene has significance but we don't know why until later in the book. The book is then divided into six parts, each spanning a specific amount of time: Part One - 1135...
