Shop until you drop: Kendals!

Advantages: Great location and great range of items
Disadvantages: some things expensive!

...Kendals Kendals (only 1 'L' not 2 as Ciao have put!) is one of Manchester's old department stores. It is owned and operated by House of Fraser and is the largest department store in Manchester and is very centrally located. It offers a good range of items and always has some great buys in sale season (after Christmas and the summer) Location? Kendals is located on Deansgate and is right in the heart of the city and near to other shopping areas. Within a five minute walk of Kendals you will find other massive names such as Harvey Nichols, Selfridges and Marks and Spencer. If you are driving form outside of Manchester then Deansgate is well signposted once you approach the city centre and Kendals is clearly visible. Car parks are well signposted throughout the city centre and Kendals has its own designated car park behind...

Arts based courses in deepest darkest Cumbria

Advantages: Small, friendly, relatively inexpensive.
Disadvantages: Does not offer a stereotypical "student lifestyle"

...Upon arriving at the main campus (the Fine Art department has a seperate, small campus) you will be struck by it's small size, but suprisingly modern design. A modern building, surrounded by trees and set above and just outside the city centre. The Institute offers a variety of Arts based degree courses, from Fine Art and Media Production to Journalism (full course details can be found at http://www.cumbria.ac.uk) and it also teaches a variety of post-16 educational courses such as ND's and A Levels, all in subjects related to the arts. All the course tutors and professionals in their own subject, but I will not go into too much detail about the courses as they are all so different, however I will say that most of them are practical in nature and all have specialist facilities within the campus. The campus has good facilities, all...

It's not just for passing by, call on in.

Advantages: A charming and interesting town
Disadvantages: Too much Kendal Mint Cake is bad for the waist line!!

...To many people Kendal is a place name they see on the M6 if travelling to Scotland, or a name linked to the famous Mint Cake. It is in fact a lot more than that ? it is a lovely little Market Town well worth a visit in it?s own right. WHERE IS KENDAL? Originally Kendall was part of the, now defunct, county of Westmorland, it is now part of the South Lakeland district of Cumbria, 6 miles from junction 36 of the M6. Known as ?Gateway to the Lakes?, Kendal is in fact not part of the Lake District, although it is very close to it, less than a mile from the park?s boundary. It is, in fact, only around 9 miles from Windermere and around 30 miles from Keswick. The other lakes are all within an hour or two's travelling by car from the town It is a lovely, historic little town nestled in the valley on the banks of the River Kent...

To Mount Everest and Beyond.......

Advantages: Great source of energy for walkers, very tasty
Disadvantages: none

...a little revitalised and refreshed even after eating the smallest piece. =A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY= Kendal mint cake was first developed by accident by Joseph Wiper who in his attempt to create clear glacier mints in 1869 came up with this delicious mint cake. As the name may suggest, the mint cake originates from Kendal in Cumbria, England, very near to the lake district, so if you're every holidaying in the lake district be sure to make a stop in Kendal and visit one of the local manufacurers as there are 3 to choose from and the three are as follows 1. QUIGGINS - With manufacturing dating back to 1888, Quiggins claims that it is the original home of Kendal mint cake and is the oldest mint cake manufacturer still in operation. Currently operating in Lowfellside, Kendal, Cumbria, England, Quiggins provides a variety of sweet...

Langdale Pikes Report

Advantages: Beautiful scenery, fresh air...
Disadvantages: None

...District National Park is set within Cumbria, in the North West of England. Here is housed England?s highest, Scafell Pike, but we are not going there today ? that is another review. You get here by heading up ? or down, depending on which way you travel, the M6 and taking Junction 36 for the southern end and 40 for the northern side. Okay? all happy? So, we are here ready to discover the Langdale Pikes further? The Pikes are: Harrison Stickle (2403 feet high) Pavey Arc ? and it?s famous rake Jack?s Rake (2288 feet) Loft Crag (2270 feet) Pike o? Stickle (2323 feet) Thunacar Knott (2351 feet) Wainwright said, ?No mountain profile in Lakeland arrests and excites the attention more than that of the Langdale Pikes,? and I quite agree. People of all ages grace its hill tops every day, from novice walkers, curiously following...

Marymoose meets some alpacas!

Advantages: I LOVE alpacas, they're so cute! A great place to meet some alpacas!
Disadvantages: Not so cute in the summer, no babies, alpaca wool is expensive, might get muddy!

............................................................................. Intro The best thing about having visitors (well, apart from that if you?re lucky they?ll pay for a nice meal for you) is planning an itinerary. Living in Cumbria we have a great choice of places to take our visitors, although as people come up again and again it can be harder to choose where to go, based on where we?ve taken them before! With my parents and friends coming up for a weekend I decided that we?d go to Rheged as they?d love the shops there, but I needed somewhere else for us to visit, and the Alpaca Centre was what I decided as it?s very near to Rheged, in Stainton just outside Penrith. The first time hubby and I visited the Alpaca Centre was in the winter a few years ago when we visited with my best friend and her husband. We all...

A Sizeable day out

Advantages: Family Friendly
Disadvantages: Closed at weekends

...Sizergh Castle is a National Trust property which is located in South Cumbria in England, about 10 minutes from the M6 motorway means it's easy to get to by car. Public transport isn't so good, there are buses from Kendal and Grange which stop in the vicinity, but they aren't regular and there's still a bit of a walk after that. The nearest train station is 3 miles away in Oxenholme. The Castle The castle is a beautiful medieval house, famous for its Elizabethan oak panelled rooms some of which was once housed in the Victoria and Albert Museum, and has now been returned to the castle. It has been home to the Strickland family for over 750 years. The Great Hall was added to the house in 1450, and was extended in 1770. You can either walk around the house at your own leisure or you can take a guided tour. If you have...

Lovely food, beautiful location

Advantages: lovely food, beautiful location
Disadvantages: little bit expensive, no outside area really

...This is a pub which I return to over and over again when I have a special occasion as the food is really good quality but quite pricey. I've celebrated my graduation here, my grandparents' 80ths and my engagement as it's the sort of restaurant that you don't just go to every day! The location: This pub is set on the road between Kendal and Windermere (The back road as locals call it) The B5284 to be precise! The road can be quite busy in the day but you don't notice it once inside the pub's old thick stone walls. It is built in a row of little stone white-washed cottages set back off the road. And, according to some research I just did, it was built in 1711 so it is steeped in history. Opposite the pub are acres and acres of rolling countryside so it is very peaceful (when it's in the evening and no cars are zooming past!) It is...

Yum yum!

Advantages: The unique flavour and size of bars
Disadvantages: Some may find it too sugary!

...I absolutely love Kendal Mint cake - it is one of those sweet items that I have enjoyed since I've been little and continue to love even though. I don't know that many people who like it and I never know why because in my opinion it is just so nice!! What is it? Kendal mint cake is a block of sugar, glucose, water and peppermint oil. It is made by the sugar, glucose and sugar being boiled in a copper pan whilst being stirred and then the peppermint oil being added. Apparently if the mixture wasn't stirred then this would mean the mixture would become clear like glacier mints. Once it is ready the mixture is then the moulds and sets. It is so called Kendal mint cake because that is where it is made but there are different companies who do make it one being the above, Romleys. How big is it? What I like about Kendal Mint cake is...
