Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54

Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.

Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied. On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. Branagh on form

Advantages: A worthy successor to the Olivier classic
Disadvantages: Some of the non-Branagh portions seem a little lackluster

...If any film is going to vindicate Kenneth Branagh's attempt to eventualy direct and star in the entire Shakespear canon, then it is this one. With many of his friends (Nepotism is allowed when they are all such acomplished actors as these) again in attendance. Branagh shines in the role that for so long was only identified with Olivier. Staking a spirited claim on the 'big' speaches of Henry as well as delivering the rest of the performance with skill, subtlety and wit. Brian Blessed makes a hearty and worthwhile contribution (And was no doubt happy to finaly be in a branagh film and NOT be killed during it) Whilst Richard Briars Bardolph was left dangling from a tree. Branagh At His Best

Advantages: The acting, directing, photography is excellent
Disadvantages: It is a bit long, but the handy intermission allows for toilet breaks

...PLEASE NOTE: This is a review of the Kenneth Branagh version. "Hamlet", an elaborate script, needs an elaborate director, and a varied actor and Kenneth Branagh is exactly that. It's obvious that Branagh has wanted to make this film for years because there is so much energy in the movie. The first ever celluloid version to have every word of the play, it clocks in at about four hours, and is a hard film to take in all at once, but never before have I seen this kind of quality of acting in a Shakespeare film. Branagh is excellent as the troubled Dane, Hamlet, Derek Jacobi does a wonderful turn as an almost soft Claudius, Julie Christie has no struggle as Gertrude and a whole host of supporting cast including Richard Briers (Polonius), Kate Winslet (Ophelia), Michael Maloney (Laertes), Nicholas Farrell (Horatio)Timothy Spall...

Review of Hamlet (DVD)

What's The Frequency Kenneth?

Advantages: Most of the favourites from the popular period
Disadvantages: Will not convert unbelievers

...paid dividends, as where as others have fallen by the wayside, they have continued to write stimulating and entertaining pieces of pop/rock. Their most popular, and also most enjoyable period is covered by this DVD. The early years (talking pre- 'Out Of Time' [Losing My Religion]) are sadly pretty much undiscovered by most, and also this DVD. That said to cover their whole career on one DVD would take some doing. This DVD also stops short of their last release, 'Around The Sun'. R.E.M. are one of my favourite bands, and the songs of their middle period (Everybody Hurts, Man On The Moon, The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight, What's The Frequency Kenneth...) are songs that defined an era. They may be seen by many as aloof and boring in some instances, but I think that they have produced enough quality over the years to warrant all the accolades...

With the diaries of Kenneth Williams, you don't so much saunter down a glittering memory lane, as plunge into a private, squirming hell. Y'see, Kenneth wasn't what he looked, and let's face it, that was an already pretty strange image. Here was a man with blantant homosexual leanings, with which he repulsed himself. He detested and loved the general public simultaneously. He was morbidly afraid of other people's germs, to the point of directing visitors to his flat to the local WC down near Baker Street Station, when their need arose. The book is filled with his printable thoughts on many of his co-stars and friends, and much had to be edited out, a sublime job by Russell Davies, as they were deemed unsuitable, and more...

It's been a bad day on the moon, Kenneth.

Advantages: No weak links, 2 great new tracks.
Disadvantages: A couple of great hits missing.

If you want to hear good examples of REMs rockier songs, listen to tracks such as ?What?s The Frequency, Kenneth? and ?Animal?. ?What?s The Frequency?? reminds me of the time I saw REM play live at the home of quality football ? Hudderfield?s McAlpine stadium? the gig was part of the ?Monster? album tour and this was the opening song, as it is on the ?Monster? album. For fans of the band who have not seen them live? if you get the chance, do so ? they are even better live than on CD. If, like me, you?ve ever wondered what the opening lyrics are to ?What?s The Frequency?? then let me enlighten you? ...My recent quest for FREE DVD hire I visited and many DVD web sites that offered a free trial. Now call me tight (no that wasn?t an invite), but I like bargains and freebies and am not ashamed to say so. My quest took me to enough sites to hire DVDs for about four months so far (with plenty to come too). My latest free DVD site also happens to be the best I have tried for several reasons (see rest of op); the site in question is Blockbuster.co.uk. Other sites that I have had free rentals from and then cancelled have all been similar, two weeks free trial with two DVD?s per time ? which in effect gives you about four free DVD?s. With Blockbuster?s things are different slightly ? which add a great deal of benefit to us the customer.
