The Names Bond Museum Keswick

Advantages: Interesting if you like James Bond
Disadvantages: If you don't like Bond its not for you

...Keswick, but for Sat Nav purposes??. The Bond Museum , Southey Hill Trading Estate, ( Behind Cumberland Pencil Museum ) Keswick, Cumbria CA12 5NR Useful Links & Contact Info Web: www.thebondmuseum.com Tel: 01768 774044 Opinion Despite my reservations, this was actually a good day out and I found it very interesting. The staff were friendly and informative, which is always a plus when you visit these places. Well worth popping in if you are ever up in the Lakes (and not just because its raining!)....

A Cumbrian mystery....

Advantages: see review
Disadvantages: see review

...I am lucky enough to live within a short drive of the Lake District in Cumbria. It is an area I love and would not consider living anywhere else. One of the places I love to visit is the mysterious Castlerigg stone circle near Keswick. The Castlerigg stone circle is a prehistoric stone circle built around 3200 BC. It consists of 38 stones with the largest being about 8 feet tall. The circle is over 100 feet in diameter. To the east of the circle is a small rectangle going into the main circle consisting of about 10 stones. Like other stone circles no one really knows why this one was built but there is speculation that it had something to do with astrology. Although the site was excavated in the 19th century nothing much was found here. The setting of the Castlerigg stone circle is stunning. I have visited at all times...

Squirrel Lodge, B&B in Keswick, Lake District

Advantages: Clean, well presented and everyone polite and helpful
Disadvantages: Problems over price, some glitches with food

...Squirrel Lodge is a bed and breakfast in Eskin Street, in Keswick. Keswick is a delightful town situated in the heart of the Lake District and is an ideal base for exploring the area for activities such as walking and cycling. The town itself has a good number of restaurants, pubs and shops. The bed and breakfast is situated near to the town centre, just a few minutes walk away. It's easy to get to and the location of the bed and breakfast is very convenient. The biggest challenge can be finding car park spaces, but this is a problem for many of the establishments (and indeed locals) in the area, but we were able to find spaces not too far on each occasion. We stayed for three nights during the off-peak season, and Squirrel Lodge was generally full, although still had vacancies on a couple of nights. There are a range of rooms, twin...

Famous cars in Keswick

Advantages: get to see famous and one-off cars up close
Disadvantages: no cameras allowed

...This place is a hidden gem! You wouldn't think of Keswick as being a tourist destination that attracts car enthusiasts, more the sort of place for hillwalkers, cyclists, lazy walks in the country.... One of the other museums in the town is dedicated to pencils for goodness sake! But This one is a cut above the rest. Granted it is not very big, and they don't have the space to display all of their vehicles at any one time, but you are always guaranteed to see a good few of your favourite cars from the movies and tv programmes. The museum is easy to find, as is signposted in several parts of the town, and is located only a minutes walk from one of the main car parks. This makes it an ideal part of any excursion to this part of the lake districts, especially on days when the weather is not so good. The time I was there, the cars...

Arts based courses in deepest darkest Cumbria

Advantages: Small, friendly, relatively inexpensive.
Disadvantages: Does not offer a stereotypical "student lifestyle"

...Upon arriving at the main campus (the Fine Art department has a seperate, small campus) you will be struck by it's small size, but suprisingly modern design. A modern building, surrounded by trees and set above and just outside the city centre. The Institute offers a variety of Arts based degree courses, from Fine Art and Media Production to Journalism (full course details can be found at http://www.cumbria.ac.uk) and it also teaches a variety of post-16 educational courses such as ND's and A Levels, all in subjects related to the arts. All the course tutors and professionals in their own subject, but I will not go into too much detail about the courses as they are all so different, however I will say that most of them are practical in nature and all have specialist facilities within the campus. The campus has good facilities, all...

Skiddaw Report

Advantages: Pleasant and challenging.
Disadvantages: None

... Introduction Visitors to Keswick would fail to miss the majestic bulk that is Skiddaw. It stands proudly and in all its glory, surveying the land around it, like a sentinel guarding the people of Northern Lakes. This makes it different from the Lakes? other Three Thousanders (mountains over three thousand feet in height, of which there are four), that it is so easily seen. The other three are not as well spotted as Skiddaw. Scafell Pike and Scafell are shy, rarely seen from the areas nearby and it is by heading their way on foot that their features comes into view. Helvellyn is the same, although the slopes are vividly seen from the A591. One fails not to spot Skiddaw, even though many of Keswick?s visitors might well not known its name. Children throwing skimmers into Derwent Water with its shadow before them, wanderers...

Review of Skiddaw, Keswick

Keswick

Advantages: Fresh air and good food
Disadvantages: Rains a lot

...Beneath the beautiful Skiddaw Mountains and the placid shores of Derwent Water nestles the picturesque town of Keswick. Indeed you look you cannot help but be impressed by the imposing majesty of the surrounding countryside which ever way you look. To get to Keswick by road perhaps the easiest way is via the M6 to junction 40 (Penrith) and then a short journey of perhaps 20 minutes down the A66. If you travel by rail then go to Penrith and from there a local bus into Keswick. On arrival at Keswick you will find that there are plenty of car parks which are well sign posted but beware the one at the local supermarket which imposes a charge of £5 if you stay for more than three hours, and as there is so much to see believe me you will. Walking through the town I found much to my surprise that I didn’t see any fast food...

Marymoose touches a zebra!

Advantages: Wide selection of animals, fun to be had!
Disadvantages: Some animals didn't seem to have enough space, quite expensive

................................................................................................. Intro When I had a date set for my friends G, S, K and R to come up to stay I had to decide where I?d take them, and it went without saying that one of our activities would be animal related (you might like to read my review of the Sheep and Wool centre for more Cumbria animal fun and frolics). Trotters World of Animals was a place I?d not been to before, although had wanted to visit for a while so after looking at the website (www.trottersworld.com) I made the executive decision that this was the place to go! Where is it? Trotters World of Animals is located between Keswick and Cockermouth, near to Bassenthwaite. There are signs for where to turn off the main road (the A591). When you?ve turned off take the left hand...

Marymoose and friends get Puzzled!

Advantages: Anti Gravity room, Little/big room, value for money
Disadvantages: Expensive shop, some exhibits a bit tired looking

.................................................................................................. Intro I love the August Bank Holiday weekend - hubby goes off diving with another woman and my friends come up to stay (the legendary G, K, S & R) to keep me company and a weekend of fun, frolics and lots of booze commences ? highlights including the rewriting of ?Who Killed Cock Robin? and keeping our poor neighbours awake with midnight renditions of ?Babooshka? and ?No Limit? on Singstar. Where is it? Anyway, whilst out and about in Keswick on a relatively miserable (well, it?s hardly traditional August weather) Saturday I decided to take them to ?The Puzzling Place? which is located just off the high street (there are signposts if you?re struggling to find it) in Museum Square ? amazing (well, puzzling?) that loads...

Marymoose meets some alpacas!

Advantages: I LOVE alpacas, they're so cute! A great place to meet some alpacas!
Disadvantages: Not so cute in the summer, no babies, alpaca wool is expensive, might get muddy!

............................................................................. Intro The best thing about having visitors (well, apart from that if you?re lucky they?ll pay for a nice meal for you) is planning an itinerary. Living in Cumbria we have a great choice of places to take our visitors, although as people come up again and again it can be harder to choose where to go, based on where we?ve taken them before! With my parents and friends coming up for a weekend I decided that we?d go to Rheged as they?d love the shops there, but I needed somewhere else for us to visit, and the Alpaca Centre was what I decided as it?s very near to Rheged, in Stainton just outside Penrith. The first time hubby and I visited the Alpaca Centre was in the winter a few years ago when we visited with my best friend and her husband. We all...
