An Eck of a Corner

Advantages: An impressive sight, easy to get to, free
Disadvantages: Some people might expect "more"

...The Deutsches Eck is probably Koblenz?s most celebrated attraction. It?s the headland where the rivers Rhine and Moselle meet, right in the heart of the city and the name Deutsches Eck translates literally as "German corner". Now, while it is certainly quite impressive to see these two mighty rivers become one, it?s not the only reason that this spot is worth visiting. Towering over the headland, perched on an enormous plinth, there is a statue of Emperor Wilhelm I which was designed by Bruno Schmitz (who was also responsible for the war memorial in Leipzig). The statue was erected to commemorate the part he played in the struggle for German union. It stands over 14 metres high and as well as Wilhelm on horseback it features a representation of the winged goddess of Victory. It?s a statue with an interesting history. In 1945 it...

Where on earth is the Hunsruck?

Advantages: Plenty to do for all the family, inexpensive
Disadvantages:

...Well, it's only five hours drive from Ostend, and it's a greast place for a holiday. Steep hills, dark forests, sunny lakes, empty roads and tidy German villages made it a delight to explore. For a bit of history, we visited Trier, the 'Rome of the North' with Emporer Constantine's 1700 year-old throne room, and Roman Baths next door. One day we left the car and took the train up the Mosel to Koblenz and then down the Rhine where we explored a ruined castle (Burg Rheinfels) and gazed down towards the Lorelei rock. At £10 return for the family of four, the train ride was our best bargain. But we found prices in Germany to be cheap, and this made it easy to add in the swimming pools, crazy golf (and even rides on a Summer bob-sleigh run!) that add fun to a family holiday. All the family want to return next year....

Cologne christmas markets

Advantages: a different way of christmas
Disadvantages: the crowds

...I have never visted Germany before but took a trip to see the Colocgne and Koblenz christmas markets. We went with a tour company which as it happens will be another story and spent only 4 hours in Cologne but it did leave its mark on me. They have 4 christmas markets 2 near the cathedral and 2 just a few minutes walk away.We went to the largest which was a battle to get to as we had to go through the shoppers but when we got to it we were not disappointed. It was not as I imagined but it was brillant, small stalls all around selling christmas things and many many food stalls. On the christmas stalls you could buy many wooden things nativity sets and the wooden displays like windmalls which you put candles in and the heat makes them turn,I got the most brillant handpainted balls and different sorts of baubles for the tree all at good...

Review of Cologne (Germany)

A small town in Germany?

Advantages: Compact, cultured, loads to do
Disadvantages: Limited "old town", some may find it lacking vitality

...and museums dotted around the city but the main concentration is around Museum Mile, close to the university. We visited the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn; this museum tells the story of the area from prehistoric times to the present day with an emphasis on the character, economy and crafts of the region. It plays hosts to temporary exhibitions but we went primarily to see the remains of Neanderthal man and a great deal of the exhibits are linked to this. Next stop was the small Altstadt or Old Town; this area in Bonn is not very remarkable, not especially old or scenic but reasonably attractive. The centre of Bonn has one or two striking buildings such as the Doppelkirche but lacks the appeal of other German cities in the area like Koblenz or Cologne. In the afternoon we visited the August Macke Museum and Gallery devoted to the life...

Diamond review  PIMP MY HOTEL!

Advantages: Hmmm.........
Disadvantages: Just a Few.

..., we had been directed off of the main road (the yellow route 9 from Bingen to Koblenz), up through some intimidatingly narrow side streets to find the hotel located on a "Y" junction on the way out of town. Situated opposite a pretty, but small, Park in a middle class residential area, this is a quiet location on the outskirts of Bad Salzig. Bad Salzig itself is a dormitory town about a mile south of Boppard, the main tourist centre in the area. Our problem with Bad Salzig was that there was absolutely nothing to see or do there, had the hotel been located on the Rhine waterfront it would at least have had scenic views and somewhere pleasant to stroll after dinner. The Park Hotel in Bad Salzig is certainly not one to use unless you arrive by car, according to their web site it is located one kilometre from Boppard railway station...

Recommended for German Christmas Markets

Advantages: Cost; simplicity; no driving; good company
Disadvantages: Long time in coach; expensive m'way services; you may not like the company!

...that we guests were getting in the way of the smooth running of the hotel! The lift did not appear to work, and elderly guests had difficulty moving their cases up and down the stairs. However, the hotel is a rather unimportant part of this trip, which you make to experience the atmosphere and flavours of the traditional German Christmas Markets. Here, you will not be disappointed. Nevertheless, you may question why Travelsphere had booked a hotel 50-60 miles from Cologne, at Koblenz-Guls. Another hour was spent on the coach for both outward and return journeys. But the markets were worth it! Traditional Black Forest-style chalets made up the market stalls, well illuminated and with a huge variety of products. Of particular note, we thought, were the Christmas decorations, especially the carved wooden light bridges...

Janej47's and Nickyturnill's A-Z of fun!

Advantages: Its a fun challenge!
Disadvantages: im not exciting!

...i was enjoying! I went on my own to a "Flares" nightclub where they play excellent cheese from the 70's! I didnt care i was on my own, i was dancing! I left the club at 1.30pm and stumbled over the road, shoes in hand and ordered a kebab! a great night out! E - Do you watch Eastenders? ********************************* I bloody hate this programme. I hate the characters and the story lines are from some planet of sad. No i don't like any soaps come to think of it! F - Last time you flew? ************************* I don't do drugs man...! hahaha! No seriously, ive never been in an aeroplane and i won't get in one either. G - Ever been to Germany? ****************************** Yes ive been there twice with the comp school. Black forest at christmas time is a truly beautiful place and the markets in Koblenze are lovely...

City Night Line from Deutsche Bahn

Advantages: Clean, private, good breakfast, take your time to travel
Disadvantages: No dining car on our train, not easy for the less mobile

...train from Cologne to Vienna really appealing - a bit of an adventure and romantic in an old-fashioned way. When we had a look on www.seat61.com (more on this website later in the review), I was sold on the whole idea because of the following description: "The train travels along the famous Rhine Valley between Koblenz and Frankfurt, so if you are in a sleeper and your compartment happens to be on the left-hand side of the train, switch off the lights and watch the Rhine pass by, mountains and castles lit by moonlight, while sipping a glass of Riesling. Wonderful!" Information and Booking = I have to say that I find the prospect of travelling by train in Europe confusing, in particular knowing how to best plan your route. Take the UK Rail Network with it's 20 odd different Train Operating Companies, each offering...

On the other HAHN, it's not Frankfurt

Advantages: Friendly, clean and efficient
Disadvantages: The name might be misleading

...NOT zip up the back. It costs me just about as much in petrol to drive the 60 miles or so to Prestwick Airport than it does to fly to Germany. But I digress. Where was I? Or, to be more accurate, where is IT? Contrary to the impression given by it's name, this airport is NOT in Frankfurt. It's actually getting on for 70 miles south-west of the city. It's situated in the region of Rhineland called Hunsrück. What? You're not familiar with the geography of the region? It's slap bang in the middle of a finger of land just south of where the rivers Mösel and Rhine join forces at Koblenz. No? Oh for goodness sake, just go to mapquest.com It's reasonably well situated for access to many cities in Germany, France, and Luxembourg. Indeed, bus services are co-ordinated so that the bus service compliments the flight timetable...

Bazel - Passau

Advantages: Great to have a bike.
Disadvantages: Can be price if you want quality

...hills and gently swaying oceans of sunflowers. I can't believe it only costs me my legs. Koblenz : All the way here were small towns dotting the countryside - each one a unique gem to itself. EVery mile or so there were little "watering holes." Fresh Swiss mountian water trickled from an elaborately decorated brass mouth into a large stone trough. Each one had the date it was built, like a trophy. Flowers and delicate metal work illuminated each fountain. It was a delight to stop at each one ; even if just to get a mouthful of water ( or to dunk my whole head in! ) Back to Koblenz. There was a bridge over the Rhine to Waldshut in Germany. I chose to stay swiss!! I found a lovely cycle shop where I bought a great yellow / black cycle shirt and a side access water bottle holder for Tina, ( the lovely girl from the London story...
